Tennis Works TV - Episode 53 - Updated 11th September 2012 -- Murray's first Grand Slam
It's been a historic year for British tennis and Andy Murray's dream of winning Wimbledon was dashed but soon to be replaced by winning Olympic gold. Last night, Murray fought to take a 2 sets to 0 lead over defending champion, Novak Djokovic, but the Serb hit back to level the match 2-2. Murray stayed strong to win the deciding set 6-2 for his first career Grand Slam singles title at the 2012 US Open. This victory has made him the first British man to win a major title since Fred Perry won the U.S. Championships in 1936.
In the Womens US Open final, Serena Williams pulled off one of her most dramatic wins of her career as she went on to win her 15th Grand Slam title by overcoming Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 to capture the crown.
Second seeds Bob and Mike Bryan defeated No. 5 seeds Leander Paes and Radek Stepanek 6-3, 6-4 in the US Open doubles final on Friday to break the Open Era record for the most Grand Slam team titles. With their 12th major trophy, the Bryans passed Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde and tied John Newcombe and Tony Roche for the all-time record.
Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci were already the first all-Italian duo in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam doubles title, and just a few months later they've done it again at the US Open. The pair defeated Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka in straight sets in Sunday afternoon's doubles final, winning 6-4, 6-2.
In the mixed doubles, Ekaterina Makarova and Bruno Soares became Grand Slam champions after defeating Kveta Peschke and Marcin Matkowski 6-7, 6-1, 12-10 in the championship tiebreak in Thursday's final.
In the Juniors, second seed Filip Peliwo held off a brave fight back from Britain's Liam Broady to win 6-2 2-6 7-5 and claim his second successive junior Grand Slam title, following on from his Wimbledon triumph in July.
The unseeded Samantha Crawford upset 12th seed Annett Kontaveit of Estonia 7-5 6-3 to win her first Grand Slam title in the girls final.
More British success in New York came in the Boys doubles final as Kyle Edmund partnered up with Frederico Ferreira Silva of Portugal to win 5-7 6-4 [10-7] against Austrailian's Nick Kyrgios and Jordan Thompson.
In the girls doubles final, the American pair of Gabrielle Faith Andrews and Taylor Townsend defeated Belinda Bencic of Switzerland and Petra Uberlalova of Slovakia 6-4 6-3.
