EUROVELO 13 - Episode 8 - ZLATOGRAD, BULGARIA TO EDIRNE, TURKEY!
THIS EPISODE... Into TURKEY!!
Here we have one more monster day in Bulgaria to Ivaylovgrad in Eastern Bulgaria, tackling yet more huge hills and finding more remote villages and towns. Definitely one of the toughest days, given the wind and cold too. The next day proves to be a whole different world as we enter Greece, and of course the sun comes back out after a few weeks of pretty much winter. After just a few hours, we approach the Turkey border and continue into beautiful Edirne....

Ivaylovgrad - Hotel Armira - 6/10. did the job. Spacious and around 20Euro with en suite. Locked bikes in outside around the side of the hotel.
Greece - just cycled through to Turkey
Edirne - Hotel Edrin - 9/10. One of the best apartment style hotels we've seen. Clean, cheap, amazing breakfast included. approx. 20Euro. Great location to walk everywhere in the city. Locked our bikes in the stairwell.

THIS EPISODE, Dospat to Zlatograd via Smolyan ski resort 1700m and Madan. DIFFICULT.

Smolyan - Sekvoia Hotel via Booking.com approx €15. Warm, ski style chalet hotel. Minimal wifi, quiet, big views over the valley. Did the job. 6/10
Zlatograd - 1st night, again booking.com approx €15, very nice room excellent cable tv (with all football!) above a little shop. 9/10. 5 min walk from best restaurant we found in Bulgaria, up river 2 minutes, cross the bridge, next to Alexandrov House and the Ethnographic Area Complex.
2nd night - due to the 1st place being full, we took a €25 house on booking.com.

A tale of two halves here as we tackle our highest mountain pass right up into ski territory, then have a huge downhill albeit with one last mountain pass to Zlatograd. Watch for more detail! Some of the most stunning scenery on the trip so far, and definitely the toughest riding.

Филмът засяга теми не само за различията на тогавашния живот на хората сравнен с днешната урбанизация и забързаност на новите поколения, но също така и актуални теми за здравословно хранене и причините за дълголетието в Родопите.
Комбинацията от кадри на емоционалните и автентични срещи с дълголетниците,преплетени с красотата на родопските планински пейзажи, пресъздават една незабравима атмосфера и създават условия за една културно-социална връзка и близост между зрител и герой.

They all have their lifetime stories fulfilled with sadness and happiness. Grown through wars and poverty, good and bad times leading us hand in hand through their experiences we will become a part of their life. The Movie:

„The Rhodopes -- A Secret for Long Life is a promotional tourism film illustrating a variety of authentic scenes focused on the life of the
longevity people in the Rhodopes. The movie introduces us to their interesting handcraftactivities and their lifetime stories. In addition, it also attempts to create a strong cultural and social connection between the audience and the
protagonists. Short info about the movie producer -- Mihail Vasilev
Mihail Vasilev was born in Smolyan, Bulgaria. In 2004 he graduated with honors the Vasil Levski Natural Sciences and Mathematics High School in Smolyan and decided to continue with his university education abroad. Prompted by his interest in media, he went to Germany and started with his Bachelor in Media Production at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt. In 2013 he successfully received his Master's Degree at the University of Applied Sciences in Mainz, devoting his graduate film project to his birthplace -- The Rhodopes and the phenomenon of centenarians in this mountain.

The Rhodopes - Paths of life
The region of the Upper Stream Valley of Arda River is developing as an attractive tourist destination for hiking and cave tourism offering visits to caves with adjusted access and to wild caves. The area was named after the longest river in the Rhodope Mountains -- Arda River, and it has kept its precious natural and cultural heritage. Here is the national architectural and cultural heritage site Agushevi Konaci, a feudal mansion complex unique for the Balkan region and the ruins of Kaleto fortresses near Koshnitsa and Mogilitsa villages. Twenty three karst caves from the region have been mapped. The most popular of which are Uhlovitsa cave, Borikovska cave, Nadarska cave, Golubovitsa cave system and Tipitseto cave. There are more than 20 different trails -- hiking, biking, and horse riding which start from the villages of Smilyan, Mogilitsa and Arda and take tourists to fabulous places where legends from the past are still alive.

Най-дългата родопска река Арда е дала името на един от най-романтичните родопски региони: Ардинското корито, скътало богато природно и културно наследство. Тук са Агушевите конаци, проходна пещера Калето и руините на едноименната крепост. В района са картографирани 23 карстови пещери, от които по-известни са Ухловица, Бориковска, Надарска, Типицето и пещерна система Голубовица. Над 20 пешеходни, вело и конни маршрути с изходни пунктове от селата Смилян, Могилица и Арда отвеждат туристите до райски кътчета, където все още са живи легендите от отминали времена.
