My Vacation at Friday Harbor & Juniper Lane guesthouse Washington State
I vacationed early August at Juniper Lane guesthouse at Friday Harbor on San Juan Island off the coast of Washington State. I flew there, took a ferry, and stayed at a beautiful tourist town. I went whale watching but only saw seals and a lighthouse.
Juniper Lane is the brown shingle house with the purple trim and the solar double windmill.
I made this video using Google Auto Awesome which definitely needs work! Editing was very difficult and slow.

San Juan County Park in Friday Harbor Washington is located on the west side of San Juan Island and overlooks Haro Strait with views of San Juan de Fuca and Vancouver Island. Near the beach, most sites have water views where you can possibly view Orcas swimming by. Recreational activities include hiking, biking and kayaking. Music Licensed From MusicBakery.com

Earthbox Inn & Spa is just one of the San Juan Island hotels but it's the only one with an indoor pool. Each San Juan Island hotel room has a king, queen or two queen beds that will lull you to sleep, plus a private bathroom. We stayed in their double queen room shown in this video. Their renovated rooms are modern with free wifi, flat screen tv, and a Keurig. They have complimentary beach cruiser bikes, free concierge, an indoor pool, a fitness center and spa. San Juan Islands Orca Whale Watching Kayak Trips: The San Juan Islands of Washington are famous as the top orca whale watching location in the United States. The first park in the world dedicated to whale watching was created here. Our San Juan Island kayak tours are designed as orca whale watching kayak trips. Of all orca whale sightings in Washington state, over 95% occur in just one relatively small area that forms the western edge of the San Juan Islands. This is where the killer whales do nearly all of their hunting and playing. And it's the exact location where Sea Quest kayak trips take you orca whale watching!
Our sea kayaking routes are planned to maximize your chances to kayak with orcas. We don't see them every time, but about 2/3rds of our kayak trip guests enjoy killer whale sightings. Remember, these are wild orca whales and they don't perform on schedule, so we can't guarantee success on every kayak trip! Be sure to check out our blog for monthly reports on how the whales are doing and our recent whale watching success rates.
Sadly, there are companies that advertise kayaking with the orcas in the San Juan Islands that never kayak in the primary orca whale watching area. It is very unlikely that you will be killer whale watching on their kayaking trips. They may see the orca whales once a month or week, but we often see them several times a day!
Remember, Sea Quest has been leading kayak tours for over 20 years and our San Juan Island kayak trips are guided by actual biologists and environmental scientists that can tell you about the lives of these amazing animals. Our record of success is the best!
Kayak Whale Watching in the San Juan Islands: Many people ask us if it is safe to kayak with orcas. The answer is an emphatic YES! These intelligent whales have never injured a human in the wild. (Only ill-treated captive orca whales have harmed people.) Orca whales are extremely aware of their surroundings and NEVER collide with kayaks. They approach kayaks with the same respect that we offer them. The killer whales of the San Juan Islands are the most studied whales in the world; they in turn have observed humans for at least six thousand years. Stable family groups, called pods, represent several generations and include grandmothers (the pod leaders), adolescents, infants, and huge bulls. Each family member is recognized by its distinctive markings and can live as long as a human. Much of what is known about the orca whale's highly-organized social life has been learned from the resident pods you can watch from kayaks in the San Juan Islands of Washington.
The beautiful San Juan Islands of Washington state are the most popular summer kayaking tour destination in the world. Friday Harbor is easily accessed from Seattle, and the San Juan Islands lie within the Puget Sound and straddle the US-Canada border where Washington meets British Columbia. The rural archipelago encompasses several hundred islands, rocks, and reefs. Hundreds of miles of twisting shorelines are perfect for exploration on sea kayak tours. The sheltered waters of the San Juans are the perfect place for beginners to kayak with killer whales.

Karen Brown's Highland Inn, San Juan Island--Friday Harbor, Washington
At the Highland Inn veteran innkeeper and world traveler Helen King has created an environment at once opulent and subtle. Her two magnificent suites are gorgeously decorated and perfectly appointed. The Whale Watch Suite is a country-French masterpiece, while The Haro Strait Suite is richer and more dramatic—with English antique furnishings and stunning accents from the Orient. You won't want to leave either room, except to wander from the bed to the sitting area in front of the wood-burning fireplace, to the jetted tub, to the steam shower, to the window seat, to the deck. An elegant living area right out of Architectural Digest separates the two suites. Guests are welcome to sit in front of the common fire here, or serve themselves tea or coffee. Breakfast is served either in the dining room or direct to your bedroom. Inside your room, you can dine in the window-seat nook or on the spacious deck. From either spot, you'll be able to hear the whales playing and feeding in waters below. Flawless. Magic.

VISITING SAN JUAN ISLANDS
VISITING SAN JUAN ISLANDS covers the behaviors of tourists and/or future resident of the San Juans. In the center of town, in the middle of the street is where tourists like to stop and display their mastery of the relaxed lifestyle by going as slow as possible and not using the crosswalk. After homage is then to the Eagle and Whale, put on your Patagonia puffy coat, for a morning stroll through the farmers market, imagining that one day you will move to Friday Harbor, raise sheep and make wool sweaters by hand. It's cool seeing creatures in the aquarium, but it's exciting finding them in the wild, like this large jellyfish, swimming with purpose and strength in the current.

SUMMARY
=======
Friday Harbor Laboratories (FHL), is a marine biology field station of the University of Washington, located in Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, Washington, United States. Friday Harbor Labs is known for its intensive summer classes offered to competitive graduate students from around the world in fields of marine biology and other marine sciences.
Autumn and spring academic terms include courses designed for advanced undergraduates as well as graduate students; most spring and fall classes run 10 weeks and feature an original research component. In addition to serving students, Friday Harbor Laboratories has a small resident scientific staff and offers year-round laboratory, library, and housing accommodations for visiting researchers and their families. Research areas include marine algae, marine conservation biology, marine invertebrate zoology, comparative invertebrate embryology, experimental and field approaches in biology and paleontology, functional morphology and ecology of marine fishes, invertebrate larval ecology, and other current topics in marine science and oceanography.
FHL was founded in 1904 by University of Washington Zoology Professor Trevor Kincaid, who became its first director. In 2004, zoologist Patricia Louise Dudley, who had spent many summers at the Laboratory, created an endowment to support research or scholarships for the study of systematics, the structure of marine organisms, or for marine invertebrate ecology. She directed that fund recipients spend significant time at Friday Harbor, and added her desire that findings contribute to the understanding of evolutionary relationships.
