Friday Harbor Washington - San Juan Islands Puget Sound
Friday Harbor is a favorite destination for many visiting the San Juan Islands. Reachable by Washington State Ferry, Private Boat, or Float Plane, Friday Harbor is a great place to catch a Whale Watching Excursion boat, go on a fishing charter or to make as a home base for visiting day trips to nearby Orcas Island, and Lopez Island.
The Washington State Ferry makes it easy to bring your car from the mainland so you can explore the Islands and you can also continue on to Victoria on Vancouver Island in Canada. Friday Harbor is the only incorporated city in the San Juan Islands and its also the county seat.
No visit to the San Juan Islands is complete without a visit to Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor with shares the same island as Friday Harbor.

Fantastic San Juan Islands (Friday Harbor)
We had a lovely couple of days at the San Juan Island, and Friday Harbor. Took the F250 and Ferry from Anacortes.
Stayed in a lovely B&B, Argyle House B&B then two trips with Maya's Legacy tours, and had a great time.
Photographing wild creatures is always difficult but we did our best and had a great time.

Sea Quest specializes in kayaking trips to watch orca whales. San Juan Islands kayaking trips are famous for sighting orca whales (also known as killer whales). Pods with up to fifty family members live here and we see these intelligent orcas on 80% or more of our San Juan Islands kayak tours in some months. Our sea kayaking trips in the San Juan Islands are designed to visit the killer whales favorite feeding, traveling, and play areas. Sea Quest whale-watching kayak tours maximize your chances for an encounter with these awesome orcas!
San Juan Island kayaking tours include:
• Lowest prices for kayak tours in the San Juan Islands.
• Best routes for kayak orca watching in the United States.
• Kayak past stunning sea cliffs & lighthouses.
• Camping on small, outer islands with eagles, otters & seals.
• Best trained biologist/naturalist guides.
• Best, newest & safest kayaks & paddling gear.
San Juan Islands Orca Whale Watching Kayak Trips: The San Juan Islands of Washington are famous as the top orca whale watching location in the United States. The first park in the world dedicated to whale watching was created here. Our San Juan Island kayak tours are designed as orca whale watching kayak trips. Of all orca whale sightings in Washington state, over 95% occur in just one relatively small area that forms the western edge of the San Juan Islands. This is where the killer whales do nearly all of their hunting and playing. And it's the exact location where Sea Quest kayak trips take you orca whale watching!
Our sea kayaking routes are planned to maximize your chances to kayak with orcas. We don't see them every time, but about 2/3rds of our kayak trip guests enjoy killer whale sightings. Remember, these are wild orca whales and they don't perform on schedule, so we can't guarantee success on every kayak trip! Be sure to check out our blog for monthly reports on how the whales are doing and our recent whale watching success rates.
Sadly, there are companies that advertise kayaking with the orcas in the San Juan Islands that never kayak in the primary orca whale watching area. It is very unlikely that you will be killer whale watching on their kayaking trips. They may see the orca whales once a month or week, but we often see them several times a day!
Remember, Sea Quest has been leading kayak tours for over 20 years and our San Juan Island kayak trips are guided by actual biologists and environmental scientists that can tell you about the lives of these amazing animals. Our record of success is the best!
Kayak Whale Watching in the San Juan Islands: Many people ask us if it is safe to kayak with orcas. The answer is an emphatic YES! These intelligent whales have never injured a human in the wild. (Only ill-treated captive orca whales have harmed people.) Orca whales are extremely aware of their surroundings and NEVER collide with kayaks. They approach kayaks with the same respect that we offer them. The killer whales of the San Juan Islands are the most studied whales in the world; they in turn have observed humans for at least six thousand years. Stable family groups, called pods, represent several generations and include grandmothers (the pod leaders), adolescents, infants, and huge bulls. Each family member is recognized by its distinctive markings and can live as long as a human. Much of what is known about the orca whale's highly-organized social life has been learned from the resident pods you can watch from kayaks in the San Juan Islands of Washington.
The beautiful San Juan Islands of Washington state are the most popular summer kayaking tour destination in the world. Friday Harbor is easily accessed from Seattle, and the San Juan Islands lie within the Puget Sound and straddle the US-Canada border where Washington meets British Columbia. The rural archipelago encompasses several hundred islands, rocks, and reefs. Hundreds of miles of twisting shorelines are perfect for exploration on sea kayak tours. The sheltered waters of the San Juans are the perfect place for beginners to kayak with killer whales.

Were were told the San Juan Island were a magical place and we totally agree! We booked into the Friday Harbor House, explored the island, attempted to Whale Watch and had a memorable dinner at the amazing Duck Soup restaurant!
Things to keep in mind when visiting Friday Harbor:
Hotels, restaurants, and tours book up quickly, make a reservation before you go!.
If you are driving on and off the island, you will need to make a ferry ticket reservation (thank goodness someone told us that, we almost didn’t get our’s!).
If you are walking onto the ferry, there is a service in Friday Harbor called the Jolly Trolly that take you all over the island once you arrive.

Oak Harbor Yacht Charter Cruises / San Juan Islands 1st Take
Greg Moshier, the founder of Oak Harbor Yacht Charter Cruises, is a seasoned charter captain with over 35 years boating experience in San Juan, Canadian and Alaskan waters. Over the years Mr. Moshier has developed vast knowledge as well as a profound respect for the Puget Sound’s San Juan Islands. Oak Harbor Yacht Charter Cruises was established with one goal – to share this passion and love for the ocean with others.
Oak Harbor Yacht Charter Cruises offers two charter options for our clients allowing for the maximum amount of enjoyment and support for our clients. Chart your own course with an Individual Vessel Charter accompanied by a skipper or join one of our scheduled Flotilla Cruises to cruise as a group.
Individual Vessel Charter
Each of the vessels in our fleet is available for individual charter accompanied by a skipper. If you have dreamed of boating in the San Juan or Canadian Gulf islands or even cruising to Alaska, and welcome the added safety and peace of mind by having a skipper on board, this is the perfect option for you. This option also allows for maximum flexibility in your vacation planning by letting you develop your own float plan. You will have the ability to work with your skipper prior to departing on your odyssey to ensure you will be able to explore any and all of the areas you have dreamed of seeing in a very safe, controlled, and comfortable cruising environment.
Flotilla Cruise Option
This option allows us to cater to a large group of boating enthusiasts and is an excellent program for yacht clubs, corporate excursions, novice boaters, large groups of family or friends among others. Even if you have no boating experience, but are eager to learn, we can accommodate your charter needs. When you cast off the dock you will be with fellow flotilla members and in the comfort of a lead vessel. While underway you will hear from the flotilla captain via VHF radio regarding navigation safety, areas of interest, native culture, local geology and wildlife.
Once we arrive at each of our designated ports of call, you have the option of participating in onshore and dinghy explorations, crabbing, and fishing or just relaxing in the comfort of your yacht with friends and family.
In order to maintain the highest level of personalized service, all flotillas are limited to no more than five vessels. Flotilla cruising is an excellent way to enjoy a stress free boating experience. It is hard to describe the sense of satisfaction for you and your crew after successfully skippering your vessel throughout the week. This vacation also provides you the opportunity to learn new areas and forge new friendships with your fellow flotilla members that will truly last a lifetime.
Boating is our passion at Oak Harbor Yacht Charter Cruises and we will do everything we can to ensure you experience a cruise of a lifetime with us!
Thanks you for visiting our website and please call if you have any questions regarding our flotilla cruises.
Karen Brown's Highland Inn, San Juan Island--Friday Harbor, Washington
At the Highland Inn veteran innkeeper and world traveler Helen King has created an environment at once opulent and subtle. Her two magnificent suites are gorgeously decorated and perfectly appointed. The Whale Watch Suite is a country-French masterpiece, while The Haro Strait Suite is richer and more dramatic—with English antique furnishings and stunning accents from the Orient. You won't want to leave either room, except to wander from the bed to the sitting area in front of the wood-burning fireplace, to the jetted tub, to the steam shower, to the window seat, to the deck. An elegant living area right out of Architectural Digest separates the two suites. Guests are welcome to sit in front of the common fire here, or serve themselves tea or coffee. Breakfast is served either in the dining room or direct to your bedroom. Inside your room, you can dine in the window-seat nook or on the spacious deck. From either spot, you'll be able to hear the whales playing and feeding in waters below. Flawless. Magic.
