Bloody Bluff, Apalachicola River, Fla.
Bloody Bluff, a small boat landing on the Lower Apalachicola River in Florida. There was a skirmish here between the Americans, and Creek Indians and their Black allies, when the US ships were coming up the river to assault Negro Fort / Prospect Bluff, in 1816. This was Spanish territory at the time.
A boat from the American ship went ashore to search for water. They were ambushed at the bank. One sailor escaped, the other four did not. Another one taken prisoner was killed by being covered in tar, and lit on fire. So that is why it was named Bloody Bluff. (Now after reading that, I want to come back and make another video!)
Not much here; I should have shown the interpretive sign, but it needed cleaning, so I didn't.
Then I went a few miles up the road to the site of Negro Fort, or Fort Gadsden, and found the park closed. I don't know why it was closed. The water level in the river was low at the time. It is maintained by the national forest, Apalachicola Nat'l Forest.
When it is closed, it is especially a big disappointment, because it is miles out in the middle of nowhere, and you have to make a big trip to reach it. About 70 miles from Tallahassee, or 30 miles from Apalachicola.

Researching Ghost Towns
Florida is home to over 400 incorporated municipalities, but this is only a fraction of the communities that have existed at
one point or another in the state's history. Researching towns and villages that no longer officially exist can be challenging, because the institutions that would normally keep the necessary records are often also defunct. Join State Archives historian Dr. Josh Goodman for a tutorial on using a combination of published and archival sources to reconstruct the history of so-called ghost towns and other unincorporated communities around the state in part 9 of our genealogy webinar series.
