Abraham Lincoln Statue, Lincoln City OR (Osmo Pocket 4k)
Welcome back to another 1 min documentary. This time around we’ll be looking at the Abraham Lincoln statue that resides in Lincoln City, Oregon.
Lincoln City was established in 1965 when 5 North Lincoln County towns consolidated into one. The name was chosen by school children.
Lincoln was once offered the Governorship of the Oregon Territory in 1849 by President Zachary Taylor however he turned it down leaving politics for a time and returning to his law practice. He spent his time riding a horse between villages reading.
Shortly after the city was incorporated sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington donated the statue to the State or Oregon. The then- Governor Mark Hatfield decided that it should reside in Lincoln City. And on October 9, 1965 the statue was dedicated.
Originally the statue was located in Kirtsis Park, but moved to it’s current location on the corner of NE 22nd Street and NE Quay Place, about 1 block north of Hiway 101, when a Community Center was built.

The Ames Monument - 2017 Narrow Gauge Convention
On the trip out to Denver, we stopped by the strange Ames Monument at what was at one time, the highest point on the Union Pacific. The Ames Monument has been called a 65 foot pile of steaming hubris.
***********************************************
Erected in 1880, the pyramid is a monument to the Ames Brothers, Oakes Ames and Oliver Ames, Jr., Union Pacific Railroad financiers. Oliver became president of the Union Pacific, as the story goes at the insistence of Abraham Lincoln. Brother Oakes was a congressman from Massachusetts.
*****************************************************
From the web:
The Ames Monument is a large pyramid in Albany County, Wyoming, designed by Henry Hobson Richardson and dedicated to brothers Oakes Ames and Oliver Ames, Jr., Union Pacific Railroad financiers. The brothers garnered credit for connecting the nation by rail upon completion of the United States' First Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. Oakes, a U.S. representative to the United States Congress from Massachusetts, asserted near total control of its construction, whereas Oliver became president of the Union Pacific Railroad (1866 - 1871).[1] In 1873 investigators implicated Oakes in fraud associated with financing of the railroad. Congress subsequently censured Oakes, who resigned in 1873.[2] He died soon thereafter.
The Ames Monument marked the highest point on the transcontinental railroad at 8,247 feet (2,514 m] However, Union Pacific Railroad Company twice relocated the tracks further south, causing the town of Sherman that arose near the monument to become a ghost town.
***************************************************
The audacity of building a transcontinental railroad in the 1860s was today's equivalent of the mission to Mars: Big, expensive and impossible, according to University of Wyoming historian Phil Roberts. President Abraham Lincoln reportedly told Oakes Ames that if he could get the transcontinental railroad built then he would be the most remembered man of the century. Lincoln personally recruited Oakes after progress by and financial support for Credit Mobilier of America, the construction company charged with building the railroad, ground to a halt. The Ames brothers succeeded where others failed and completed the transcontinental railway. However, in 1873 charges of financial fraud were leveled at Oakes, tarnishing his and the Union Pacific Railroad Company's reputation.
Public outcry towards Oakes and other Kings of Frauds associated with scandal threatened the Ames family reputation and the Ames Company that dated back to 1774 when the company started making steel-edged shovels.[5] The Ames Company later sold axes and shovels to miners during the California Gold Rush.[7] The company continued its heritage as earth movers by supplying the government shovels during the Civil War, for excavating the Panama Canal, for mining Pennsylvania coal fields, and for digging the New York City Subway.[5]

Memory of the financial scandal that surfaced in 1873 had not been forgotten when the Union Pacific Railroad Company built the monument honoring the Ames brothers during 1881-1882.[6] The Union Pacific Railroad Board of Directors voted in 1875 to erect the grand Ames Monument, in part to help reclaim some of the company's luster lost during implications of fraud leveled earlier at Oakes Ames.[2] Union Pacific stockholders subsequently authorized the construction at a meeting held in Boston on March 10, 1875.[1]
The Norcross Brothers of Worcester, Massachusetts built the monument, employing some 85 workers who lived on site, where reportedly no liquor or gambling was allowed.[1] Workers cut the stone for the pyramid from a granite outcropping common in the area. They then used oxen teams to skid the stone a half-mile to the work site. The rough-faced granite blocks used to construct the monument in many cases weigh several tons.
*********************************************************
Workers constructed the pyramid about 300 yards south of the tracks on a small knoll. When completed in 1882, the Ames Monument stood 300 feet (91 m) south of, and 32 feet (9.8 m) above, the highest elevation of the original tracks of Union Pacific transcontinental railroad at 8,247 feet (2,514 m). President Rutherford B. Hayes underscored the importance of the transcontinental railroad and thereby the Ames brothers by attending the monument's dedication ceremony.

The Monument to the American Empire
Mount Rushmore isn't just a sculpture of four presidents, it's a monument to the creation of the American Empire. Let's talk about its formation and the reason why these four men were chosen.

Why Dozens of U S President Statues Sit Deteriorating in a Rural Virginia Field
Somewhere in Virginia on the outskirts of private farmland sits the completely bizarre sight of nearly 40 giant U.S. president busts crumbling amongst the weeds. The mammoth heads—each estimated to weigh in excess of 7,000 pounds—were originally commissioned from a Houston artist as the centerpiece for Presidents Park, a ten-acre open-air museum with presidential sculptures and informational plaques located in Williamsburg, Virginia. First opened in 2004, the museum closed just 6 years later due to lack of attendance and most of the heads were eventually moved to a private farm where they sit today.
Photographer Patrick Joust recently made a trek to the presidential graveyard and shot these amazing photos of the eroding statues. The pieces are already faded and peeling from the elements and display a number of structural scars from repeated moves. The post-apocalyptic scene is reminiscent of the final moments of Planet of the Apes, or a modern take on the giant mysterious heads sprawled across Easter Island. A few of the presidential busts have been a bit more lucky: Abraham Lincoln’s bust now rests in front of the the Lincoln RV Park in Williston, North Dakota, and Theodore Roosevelt’s bust sits outside the Roosevelt Inn in Watford.
You can see more of Joust’s photography on Flickr and by following him on Facebook. (via The Virginian-Pilot, Smithsonian)
Archaeological Findings of Lincoln Era Courthouse with Archaeologist Floyd Mansberger
Archaeological excavations were performed in July of 2014 in order to mitigate the adverse affects that construction for Bloomington-Normal’s new visitors center, Cruisin’ with Lincoln on 66, would have on the historic landscape on the south side of the Museum. The Visitors Center will be located in the ground floor of the Museum with entry through a broad plaza, located on Washington Street.
Archaeological excavations not only uncovered portions of the foundation of the Second Courthouse, (which Abraham Lincoln practiced law in during his time as a lawyer on the Eighth Judicial Circuit from 1837-1861) but also exposed several artifacts from the same time period. The team’s findings will allow the Museum plot out the exact location of the Lincoln era courthouse and to provide more complete interpretation of the site during that time period.
Floyd Mansberger received his bachelor’s degree in Archaeology from the University of Illinois and his master’s degree in History from Illinois State University. He started Fever River Research in 1984 as a part-time business conducting archaeological and architectural surveys. Today, the full-time firm (based out of Springfield) specializes in cultural resource management projects concerning historical properties. For over the past 20 years, Mansberger has participated in a variety of cultural resource management projects such as archaeological and architectural surveys, archaeological excavations, and archival research, as well as preparing historic structure reports for historic buildings. Mansberger has published articles on his research in such journals as Illinois Archaeology, Transactions of the Pioneer America Society, Historic Illinois, Wisconsin Archaeologist, Agricultural History, Journal of the Illinois Geographical Society, and Western Illinois Regional Studies.
Wannabe States of the United States
Why do we only have one state named after a president? That wasn't the original plan - there were several attempts at naming states after founding fathers that failed. Let's discuss those as well as a few other proposed breakups.
