Pluses:
Restaurants were great. Location was great although not on the beach. Staff were incredibly nice and spa was first class. Enjoyable experience.
Amazing staff, the view, the attention to detail & location. We were also upgraded to a 2 bedroom suite. Out of this world & so comfortable. Loved having full kitchen facilities & washing & drying facilities. So much easier when travelling with a family.
Minuses:
Our view was not the greatest for the fireworks and could not see beach from balcony, but this was not a huge downside.
Pool is quite small compared to the size of the property. The beach is very close but sometimes it's nice to relax & grab a cocktail poolside.
INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAIʻI: Ala Wai Flood Control Project
Plans to prevent massive flooding in Waikīkī have been in the works for years, as worries mount over the threat of a major storm causing the Ala Wai Canal to overflow. Drawn up by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Ala Wai Flood Control Project would take private residential land along the canal for flood mitigation. Property owners object and say there wasn’t enough opportunity for public input. What do you think?
Hawaii in 1959
Hawaii became a state in August of 1959. What was Hawaii like then? We had half today's population - 650,000 - and 1/30th the visitors - 250,000 compared to nearly 7 million today. This was 9 years before Hawaii Five-0 showed Hawaii in vibrant color to the mainland and caused a five-fold increase in tourism.
In 1959, shopping was mostly downtown Honolulu. ALa Moana Shopping Center had just opened 8 days earlier than Statehood. Top stores included Ming's, McInerny, Andrade, Carol and Mary, and Kress.
We dined at Pearl City Tavern, the Tropics, Canlis, Tahitian Lanai, Columbia Inn, Fisherman's Wharf, Kapiolani Drive-In, the Ranch House, and Queen's Surf.
The State Capital site was selected. Alternatives included Fort Armstrong, the Windward HPU campus, the Ala Wai Golf Course, Aala Park, Fort Ruger, Oahu Country Club and 15 other sites.
John Burns was sworn in as Congressman, as was Daniel Inouye, who was mistaken as the King of Siam at his first White House dinner.
You could see the great Duke Kahanamoku everywhere. Elvis Presley had just performed at the Old Honolulu Stadium.
Hawaii's biggest group ever, the Kingston Trio topped the charts with Tom Dooley. Don Ho entertained nightly in Waikiki.
The Ward estate was still standing, where the Blaisdell Center is today, and for sporting events, we went to the Honolulu CIvic Auditorium on King Street (today the Interstate Bldg.)
Magic Island was just being talked about, as was the Ilikai.

ASC I-Force Ala Wai Yacht Harbor 4-2-2018
HONOLULU- The State’s monthly test of the Statewide Outdoor Warning Siren System, coordinated with the test of the Live Audio Broadcast segment of the Emergency Alert System, is scheduled for MONDAY, APRIL 2, 2018 at 11:45 a.m.
The warning sirens are used to alert the public to emergencies. During this monthly test, all warning sirens will sound a one-minute Attention Alert Signal (Steady Tone). There will be no exercise or drill accompanying the test.
The Attention Alert Signal informs residents to turn on a radio or television for information and instruction for an impending emergency, or if in a coastal inundation area, evacuate to higher ground.
The outdoor warning sirens are one part of a three-component emergency notification system. A simultaneous test of the Emergency Alert System is conducted with the siren system, in cooperation with Hawaii’s broadcast industry. In the event of a real emergency, warning sirens and Emergency Alert Broadcasts would be joined by alerts via the Wireless Emergency Alert system, which delivers sound-and-text warnings to mobile telephones and compatible devices.

HONOLULU, EXPLORING the historic ALOHA TOWER (HAWAII), scenic views ✈️⛴️
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit the historic Aloha Tower which is a lighthouse that is considered one of the landmarks of the state of Hawaii in the United States. Opened on September 11, 1926 at a then astronomical cost of $160,000, the Aloha Tower is located at Pier 9 of Honolulu Harbor. It has been, and continues to be, a guiding beacon welcoming vessels to the City and County of Honolulu. Just as the Statue of Liberty greeted hundreds of thousands of immigrants each year to New York City, the Aloha Tower greeted hundreds of thousands of immigrants to Honolulu. At 10 stories and 184 feet (56 m) of height topped with 40 feet (12 m) of flag mast, for four decades the Aloha Tower was the tallest structure in Hawaii. It was built in the Hawaiian Gothic architectural style.Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com.
Honolulu, on the island of Oahu’s south shore, is capital of Hawaii and gateway to the U.S. island chain. The Waikiki neighborhood is its center for dining, nightlife and shopping, famed for its iconic crescent beach backed by palms and high-rise hotels, with volcanic Diamond Head crater looming in the distance. Sites relating to the World War II attack on Pearl Harbor include the USS Arizona Memorial.
The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.

Kawaihae Harbor, Island of Hawaii
Kawaihae Harbor is on the Kohala Coast north of the Waikaloa Resorts on the Island of Hawaii. It is the home of Kawaihae Canoe Club.
Kawaihae Harbor includes a fuel depot, shipping terminal and military landing site. Outside of the man-made breakwall of the harbor is a popular surf spot and the Pua Kailima o Kawaihae Cultural Surf Park.
The small town features a handful of restaurants and art galleries. To the north of the harbor is the Kawaihae Canoe Club and a small boat ramp. To the south is Puʻukoholā Heiau national historic site, built by King Kamehameha I in 1791. Also to the south is the smaller Mailekini Heiau and the Hale o Kapuni Heiau, which is submerged.
The United States Army Corps of Engineers dredged the harbor and built the breakwall between 1957 and 1959. In 1970, construction of a small boat harbor began to the south of the main harbor entrance by several institutions under the name of Project Tugboat. Over 100 tons of conventional explosives were buried in the Kawaihae reef and detonated to clear the basin and the entrance.
It also served as the launching point for the film Waterworld with Kevin Costner. The artificial reef or floating island was just off the coast with headquarters for the movie at the harbor.
