FIRST LOOK at Alamo Drafthouse in San Francisco! Star Wars Premiere Info & More!
bayareahq.com - WATCH: Alamo Drafthouse Star Wars SF Premiere & Menu - San Francisco, get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Alamo Drafthouse’s New Mission Theater. The cinema will open to the public on December 17th, launching with inarguably the most hotly-anticipated movie event of the 21st Century: STAR WARS: EPISODE VII: THE FORCE AWAKENS. Bay Area HQ's Ally Williams caught up with CEO/Founder Tim League & Creative Director Michael Keegan to get all the details on what this amazing venue will offer to not only visitors, but also to the community. Tim & Mike talk about what's unique at the San Francisco location and some interesting info on the Star Wars premiere. Check it out.
Alamo Drafthouse’s New Mission Theater is the company’s first foray into California and it marks a dramatic arrival for the brand. The theater’s meticulous $10 million restoration and retrofit has resulted in a movie mecca as original 1920’s decor fuses with state of the art technology. The New Mission is the first theater in North America equipped with Sony’s revolutionary 515DS dual-4K projectors.
I was seven when I first saw Star Wars Episode IV. Nearly 40 years later, I still remember exactly where I saw it and every detail of the experience. said Drafthouse CEO/Founder Tim League. I can think of no better way to launch our new flagship, the historic New Mission Theater, than with this hugely anticipated film.
Alamo Drafthouse’s restoration and retrofit of the 1920s movie palace in San Francisco’s Mission District features a total of five screens, ranging in size from boutique screens of just 34 to 320 seats in the grand hall, as well as a full-service bar and kitchen, in-theater dining and a strictly enforced (and widely lauded) no-talking/no-texting policy.

Alamo Drafthouse SF Plans Oakland Expansion To Old Parkway Theater
#Zennie62 Alamo Drafthouse SF Plans Oakland Expansion To Old Parkway Theater
UPDATE. Here
The Old Parkway Theater, one of my favorite haunts before it shut down, and located at 1836 Park Boulevard in Oakland, has been closed for six years, or since Speakeasy Theaters, which operated it and the El Cerrito, went out of business in 2009.
But the old legendary place seems to be the focus of a plan that just may be what the revitalization doctor ordered: Alamo Drafthouse bar and restaurant in San Francisco is planning to expand to a new place in Oakland at that address.
This news came via an obscure Facebook post I happened to catch moments ago, and was installed on August 2, by someone named Tina Marie. What's interesting about her Facebook profile is she and I have a mutual friend in Will Vaharo.
Will now lives in Seattle but he once lived in Oakland and was one of the cool group of people that made up Speakeasy Theaters. He was known for the Thrillville shows back then. Not sure if he's involved in this new effort or not, but the connection is a provocative one.
Community Meeting Wednesday August 10th, 5:30 pm, Woody's Cafe
If you want to find out more about the Alamo Drafthouse plans for the Old Parkway Theater, there will be a community meeting today, Wednesday August 10th, 5:30 pm at Woody's Cafe, 1841 Park Boulevard. Oakland's District Two Councilmember Able Guillen will be there, along with the Alamo representatives.

Tim League, Alamo Drafthouse Founder & CEO | Talks at Google
TIM LEAGUE / Alamo Drafthouse Founder & CEO
Tim League graduated from Rice University in 1992 with degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Art/Art History. After a two-year stint at Shell Oil in Bakersfield, California, Tim left engineering and opened up his first movie theater. When that theater closed after a short run in 1995, he and his wife Karrie headed to Austin with 200 seats, a projector, screen, speakers and a passion to do it right the second time. They founded the Alamo Drafthouse in 1997, where as CEO League remains committed to providing creative programming and a zero tolerance policy for disruption during the theater experience. League also co-founded Fantastic Fest, the largest genre film festival in the United States, and launched Drafthouse Films, a distribution label committed to releasing provocative, visionary and unusual films from around the world. Past releases include critically-acclaimed comedies FOUR LIONS and KLOWN, the rediscovered classic WAKE IN FRIGHT, and the Oscar-nominated BULLHEAD and THE ACT OF KILLING. When asked about his early qualifications for opening a movie theater, League answered, None, other than really liking movies, which I guess is the most important part. Alamo Drafthouse is expanding nationwide to Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Brooklyn, with many more on the horizon.

Why we love Mister Rogers and WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR? | Drafthouse Recommends
We're honored to name Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville's WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR as our next Drafthouse Recommends title, a designation we place on films that move, innovate and inspire. Tickets are on sale now at
For over thirty years, Fred Rogers entertained, educated, and nurtured children and adults alike with his seminal public television show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. This new documentary from the director of 20 FEET FROM STARDOM explores and celebrates Rogers' life and legacy through archival footage and interviews. It’s a documentary needs to be seen and felt, with a message that's vital and so relevant to today.
Here’s why we love it (and think you will, too).
The man
WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR is a timely reminder of how just one gentle man can inspire hope and kindness in millions. A bullied youth, an ordained minister, an early participant in television’s first decade -- these experiences all led to Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, the innovative mix of education and whimsical make-believe that began airing on American public broadcasters fifty years ago.
“I give an expression of care every day to each child, to help him realize that he is unique,” said Rogers in a 1969 appearance before a Senate committee to defend PBS funding. “I end the program by saying, ‘You've made this day a special day, by just your being you. There's no person in the whole world like you, and I like you, just the way you are.’ And I feel that if we in public television can only make it clear that feelings are mentionable and manageable, we will have done a great service for mental health.”
Yep, bring some tissues... there's going to be tears.
The moviemaking
20 FEET FROM STARDOM director Morgan Neville’s WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR is an emotional and in-depth look at a man who truly believed in the value of respect, kindness, and care -- for children, for the disadvantaged, and for everyone. Through the use of extensive archival footage and interviews with family, friends and colleagues, WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR tells the story of Fred McFeely Rogers and his life’s work.
The mission
After more than fifty years, Mister Rogers' message of care, compassion and decency has never mattered more. We believe in the message of the film and in Fred Rogers’ legacy, so our theaters nationwide will donate $1 from each WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR ticket sold to local PBS affiliates.
You can also help, neighbor. Throughout the month of May and June, guests who use drafthouse.com and the Alamo app will be able to add an optional PBS donation to any ticket purchase. You’ll see the prompt after you pick your seats, at the end of the purchase process, and it’ll look similar to merchandise add-ons.
Tickets are on sale right now for WON’T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR in select Alamo Drafthouse markets throughout the month of June.
