Peace ceremony in Haines, Alaska
In August of 1980, Austin Hammond (Gunx̱aa G̱uwakaan, Daanawáaḵ), clan leader of the Lukaax̱.ádi, gathered together the Tlingit and non-Native community to protest the mistreatment of the land and people of his ancestral homeland of Lḵoot, Haines, and to lead a G̱uwakaan Ḵu.éex', a Peace Ceremony. According to the film Haa Shagóon (Kawakey, 1981), Austin requested that the peace rock, or 'Deer Rock,' G̱uwakaan Teiyí, broken into pieces by road builders, be made whole; that the fish weir be removed; that our sacred burial grounds be protected so never again will the bones of our ancestors lay scattered and disturbed; and we ask that we may lawfully catch salmon for our subsistence in this river, a heritage denied to us that is rightfully ours.
In this excerpt of the ceremony, Austin is joined by George Davis, Kichnáalx̱, clan leader of the Deisheetaan, Shdeen Hít, who was a lead orator with Austin; and Walter Soboleff, Ḵaajaaḵwtí, of the Aanx̱'aakhittaan, who translated the speeches. George Davis shares some history about Lḵoot, and speaks about traditional strength training and Tlingit cultural values. Austin tells Tlingit history, explains aspects of the Peace Ceremony, and powerfully articulates the meaning and value of their sacred land, uniting Tlingit spirituality with a powerful political request. Walter Soboleff delivers an eloquent English translation, artfully conveying the meaning and passion of Davis and Hammond. George Davis, Austin Hammond and Walter Soboleff are among the most deeply admired and revered Tlingit Elders in memory. In this ceremony, they teach young Tlingit people how to be powerful catalysts for change, while making a courteous but insistent request to the government and larger community for respectful and appropriate political adjustments, a request that cannot be overlooked.
This archival recording is from the Dauenhauer Tlingit Oral Literature Collection at the Sealaska Heritage Institute's archives. This recording was placed online as part of an Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS) grant program. From left to right, the picture includes Walter Soboleff (Ḵaajaaḵwtí), Austin Hammond (Gunx̱aa G̱uwakaan, Daanawáaḵ), and George Davis, (Kichnáalx̱).

RV'ing Alaska's Inside Passage
The adventure begins on beautiful Vancouver Island in British Columbia with a visit to Telegraph Cove, possibly the best place on Earth to view Orca (killer whales). We continue north to Ketchikan, Alaska's first city on the Inside Passage. Here we explore the spectacular Misty Fjords National Monument by kayak and float plane. We also learn about the art of totem pole carving and watch as they are created. A short side trip by ferry takes us to Prince Of Wales Island, which has more than 2,000 miles of logging roads for exploration. The island is also known for its luxury fishing lodges.
Wrangell calls itself Alaska's Hidden Jewel and is paradise for those seeking outdoor adventure! Many say that if you're looking for the real Alaska, you'll find it here. The Anan Bear Observatory is considered to be one of the best in the state and the only place where black and brown bears feed together. We take an exciting jet boat tour up the Stikine River - the last great un-dammed river on the continent - and visit Telegraph Creek as well as the Grand Canyon of the Stikine.
The ferry becomes part of the adventure as we head north through the Wrangell Narrows - the single most difficult navigational stretch on the Passage. Petersburg is Alaska's Little Norway and Southeast's busiest processing port, home to the area's largest fishing fleet. Sitka was once the Russian capital of Alaska and is one of the most beautiful spots on our route. We explore the town's history and native culture. The Alaska Raptor Center offers a close-up at eagles. A wildlife cruise to St. Lazaria Island lets us observe whales, puffins, sea lions and otters. A snorkeling tour reveals Alaska's underwater world.
Juneau is the state capital. The biggest attraction is Mendenhall Glacier, which we explore with an exciting helicopter tour and glacier trek. Some of the best humpback whale watching is within a short boat ride of town. Incredible glacier calving and towering cliffs can be seen at nearby Tracy Arm. Side trips take us to beautiful Glacier Bay and the quirky little town of Pelican.
Our adventure ends with a tour of historic Skagway and more wilderness adventures in Haines, including a river tour, an air boat ride and panning for gold.
Imagine taking a tour of Alaska and bringing your home along for the ride! Join us on our RV adventure and get helpful tips to plan your own. - views before 6/12 - 4,190 - uploaded 9/7/09

* I asked Bo what he meant when he said, We don't use those anymore referring to the composting bins, and he emailed clarification:
Making compost has been primarily my department and in the summer time it (hopefully in the past!) occupies a big % of my overall farm labor. We always used to just do the bin to bin flip method and turned all the piles every 2 weeks by hand with a pitchfork...a LOT of work when you have 9 piles.
A couple of years ago we started composting in larger free standing piles (no bins) outside using filter fabric geotex cloth as a covering material. This stuff allows the pile to breath and pass moisture out but it also does a really good job of wicking the rain down around the pile through the fabric and keeps the piles quite dry. At first we turned the piles by hand but now we use the tractor. It takes about 10 minutes to turn a big pile with the tractor and about 2 hours to do it by hand.
We also built the hot tub time machine this year and when we figure out how best to feed it I think it will also be a productive and low labor way to make compost. We still used one set of bins this year but to a lesser extent than normal and I think we will phase them out completely next year.
