American River Trail -- Folsom to Sacramento CA
Ride data:
I took a trip up North and was lucky enough to ride this fantastic trail. I think this might have been the most fun I have ever had on a bike! Not really the place for a Quest because of the radius of some of the turns but that's ok I can go slower. I had trouble with squirrels and ended up going over one without hitting it with the tires. I saw it run off afterward in my mirror. I saw another velomobile a couple times while I was up there but didn't stop to chat. Pedestrians and runners are asked to walk/run to the left so that they negotiate the trail with bicyclists moving in the opposite direction. This seemed to work well.
Parkway in Crisis - Failure on American River in Sacramento - Sacramento Homeless on Bike Trail
I have been walking in the American River Parkway daily for over 10 years and have become so dismayed by what I have been seeing that I chose to make an 8-minute documentary video about it. I hope this video can help spread the word about the degradation of this beautiful space. Please share it if you are inspired and encourage our local leaders to act. We must house the homeless in a clean, safe location so that we can clean up, maintain, and enforce laws in the parkway.
These videos were taken over three weekends in November and December of 2019.
Vlog #22 - Biking Down The American River Bike Trail

Biking Down The American River Bike Trail (Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail) | California
I started at the Trail-head located on Hurley Way & Ethan Way, Sacramento, CA. . Click this link (
The ride was suppose to be just a ride showing the trail and the view and put to music. Nope, I can do that I suppose. I found myself being your Tour Guide as I road down the path. What I saw was interesting. This you will find is people, Deer, Wild Turkey, Goats, and.... Lots of beautiful scenery that is pleasing to your eye and also your soul. People are friendly even the (sadley) homeless that are along the trail. I found that to be more of an issue the further I got near the center of Sacramento and Downtown. I would not travel this in the evening just to play it safe. Why risk yourself. If you did, don't go alone. Best if you went with a bike group. Stick t the golden rule (Power in Numbers).
This bike trip down the American River I found lots of wild turkey and other little wildlife. I even saw a deer. I took footage of the deer but my phone/camera malfunctioned and I was unable to retain the beautiful baby like mama. She was amazing to look at. There was a Buck in the trees too.
Came across some goats. They help clear the land and a cool little feature to the trip.
I ended the trail at Discovery Park, right where the American River and the Sacramento River connect. It's a beautiful park filled with all the Park amenities, even bails of hay for archery.
Spent a little time on the (Green Bridge) going over the American River. Looked over to the interstate (I-5) to see if I can see Trucker Nae..Nae pass by. ( . Nope... But I did see a lot of Owner Operator and Mega Carriers like SWIFT Transportation. I could show truck footage all day. Maybe a good idea for an upcoming video is to bike over to the 49er Truck Stop in the West Side of Sacramento of interstate (I-80).
I continued my ride showing footage of the Sacramento River heading into Old Town Sacramento and peddled my way next to California State Railroad Museum. ( A crowd favorite for travelers and locals alike. Totally worth the time. Bring those kids. There eye light up. Ask for one of their volunteers Taka Blackburn. I worked with him in my chosen profession and he is a great person. Tell him Paul Crews sent you his way and I said, Hello. He is awesome.
I drove by the Delta King ( I great place to stay and eat. and a couple other restaurants. All are great and will please all in your party. Something for everyone.
Headed over to the West Sacramento side of the bridge. Went by Raley Field. Home of the AAA Affiliates for The San Francisco Giants . ( Call for Tickets and if you have four (4) or more heading tot he game, log onto ElkGroveSubaru.com and print off a FREE PARKING VOUCHER. Yep... Save $10 BUCKS! Great Deal. Don't forget to consider a Subaru for your next vehicle and if you do, don't forget Elk Grove Subaru.

The American River is a 120-mile-long river in California that runs from the Sierra Nevada mountain range to its confluence with the Sacramento River in the Sacramento Valley. Via the Sacramento River, it is part of the San Francisco Bay watershed. This river is fed by the melting snowpack of the Sierra Nevada and its many headwaters and tributaries, including the North Fork American River, the Middle Fork American River, and the South Fork American River.
Checking Out Flooding on the American River Bike Trail, 4/30/2017
Just a quick ride to see how far I could go on the American River Bike Trail (Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail) before flood waters stopped me. Made it to the Highway 160 undercrossing before a sign said FLOODED.
Also bonus footage of a guy boasting how to sneak alcohol onto the river at the Howe Ave River Access.
American River Parkway Recreation Video Guide
In The Robinson Twins Present Natural Recreation: The American River, Richard and Robert Robinson take the viewer on an approximately 49 minute personal tour describing the recreational opportunities that the American River, in Sacramento, California has to offer. The twins show the American through the use of 3D computer models and animation along with aerial, on-the-water, and on-the-ground footage and photos. The activities the recreationist may enjoy include hiking, biking, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, picnicking, swimming, and nature observation.
The American River is also the site of the annual Eppie's Great Race, which is the world's first and oldest triathlon.
This was our very first video production from the year 2000 and some of the items we mention are out-of-date. At about the 11 minute mark we mention the Vita-Course par course, but it's no longer there. The other thing at about the 19 minute mark is we mention Goethe Park along the parkway, but this park has been renamed River Bend Park.

A BIT ABOUT ME: I consider myself to be an average rider. Not good with jumps, corners, and not very fast. As I continue to try and improve I find myself becoming more and more passionate about riding and wish I could do this every day. I watched many others start a MTB YouTube channel and thought it would be fun to start my own. All of them are really good riders and do an amazing job giving out information about trails, gear, and tips. I would like to think I could help review trails that aren’t as well known to encourage more bike traffic. Their channels really motivated me to move forward and put my own little twist on trail rides and mountain biking. I will do my best to inspire people to get out and ride and find people to share my adventures with.
Always on a quest to find great mountain bike trails, awesome mountain bike friends, helpful mountain biking tips, and amazing MTBing Adventures.
