Rumeli Hisarı (Rumeli Fortress) İstanbul - TURKEY
Anadolu Hisari * Anatolian Castle
Anadolu Hisari
Anadoluhisarı (English: Anatolian Castle), which is historically known as Güzelce Hisar (meaning the Proper Castle) is a fortress located in Istanbul, Turkey on the Anatolian (Asian) side of the Bosporus, which also gives its name to the quarter around it. It was built between 1393 and 1394 by the Ottoman sultan Bayezid I The Thunderbolt as part of his preparations for the Second Ottoman Siege of Constantinople, which took place in 1395. Sultan Bayezid built it on the ruins of a temple of Uranus [1] Originally named Güzelcehisar (Turkish: Beauteous Castle)[2]
Anadoluhisarı, constructed on an area of 7,000 m², is situated at the narrowest point with 660 m of the Bosporus strait and next to a creek named Göksu (Ancient Greek: Aretòs). The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, the second bridge spanning Bosporus, is located just north of the fortress. Another fortress, Rumelihisarı, was built between 1451 and 1452 by Sultan Mehmed II opposite of Anadoluhisarı on the European side in order to obtain absolute control over the sea traffic of the Bosporus Strait, which was especially vital for the Genoese in Galata, who were allied with the Byzantines and had colonies in the Black Sea such as Caffa, Sinop and Amasra.
Anadoluhisarı was erected as a watch fort. It has a 25 m high, quadratic main tower within the walls of an irregular pentagon with five watchtowers at the corners. There is a masjid in the fortress. It is the oldest Turkish architectural structure built in Istanbul. The fortress was named Güzelce Hisar in historical documents. Sultan Mehmed II reinforced the fortress with a 2 m thick wall around it, which had three watchtowers. Some extension buildings like warehouse and houses were added as well. Due to changes made in the past, it no longer retains its original appearance. Following the conquest of Constantinople, it served as a military prison.
The Turkish Ministry of Culture restored the site in 1991 - 1993. Today, this small fort creates a picturesque appearance with the old wooden houses leaning to its walls and its surroundings. Anadoluhisarı is a museum (historical site), but not open to public.

You Must See this Place in Istanbul, Anadolu Hisarı Bosphorus
In this Istanbul video I walk in Anadolu Hisarı, a exciting part of the City. Anadoluhisarı is a neighbourhood of Istanbul on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus.
I arrived to Anadolu Hisarı after my long walking Tours in Istanbul along the Bosphorus in June 2019. As you already know Walking in Istanbul is one of my favourites things to do in Istanbul. I have many Videos from different Istanbul Walks in my YouTube Channel @istanbulandfood.
Watch the Video below to see how i arrived in the neighbourhood Anadoluhisarı:
The name of this neighbourhood comes from a fortress (Eng: Anatolian Castle), it was built between 1393 and 1394 on the commission of the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I.
Here you can see traditional Istanbul waterside mansions known as yalı, nice waterside cafés and restaurants on the Bosphorus shore and along the Göksu River.
Enjoy this Istanbul Walking Tour 2019 with me and if you can, Travel to Istanbul 2019!

Rumelihisarı or Boğazkesen Castle is a fortress located in the Sarıyer district of Istanbul, Turkey, on a hill at the European side of the Bosphorus.
The Fortress Museum incorporates Rumeli, Yedikule and Anadolu Fortresses. Among all, Rumeli Fortress however clearly stands out. The Fortress covering a 30-acre area in Sarıyer, also gives its name to the location. It was built in a short period of four months. By Mehmet the Conqueror in 1452 before the conquest of Istanbul in order to prevent attacks and block aids from the north of Bosphorus. This monument is located opposite the Anadolu Fortress, built by Sultan I. Beyazıt in 1394, and is located in the narrowest part of the Bosphorus.
The name of Rumeli Fortress was “Kulle-i Cedide” in Fatih Foundations and “Yenice Hisar” in the history of Neşri and in history of Kemalpaşazade, Aşıkpaşazade and Nişancı it was “Boğazkesen Fortress”. The timber used in the construction was brought from Izmit and Karadeniz Ereğlisi and the stones were brought from various parts of Anatolia and the ruins are the remains of Byzantine structures in the surrounding area. This monumental building was restored as a museum in 1953 and was opened its doors to visitors in 1968. The open theatre structure was added then and now performances are not organized here. The mosque which was built during Rumelihisari construction and then which was demolished, was built again in its original form in 2014. It also houses some events.
WATCHING THE BREATHTAKING VIEW OF THE BOSPHORUS FROM ITS LUSH GARDEN
There are 4 main gates named; “Mountain Gate”, “Dizdar Gate”, “Hisarpeçe Gate” and “Sel Gate” and a secondary gate named, “Mezarlik Gate”. There is a total of 17 high and small towers: “Saruca Pasha”, “Halil Pasha”, “Great Zaganos Pasha” and “Young Zaganos Pasha” are among the main ones. Because there is no exhibition hall or a warehouse in the museum, cannonballs, balls, a piece of the chain that was used across the sides of Golden Horn against attacks, are exhibited in the garden. Just to enjoy the view of Bosphorus from its lush garden is even a good enough reason to visit.
