Año Nuevo State Park - Elephant Seal Guided Walks
Interested in taking a hike and exploring the word of northern elephant seals? Año Nuevo State Park offers one of the most unique wildlife experiences with a stroll through one of the few mainland elephant seal colonies in California alongside a knowledgeable docent guide. Año Nuevo docents go through extensive training and are highly knowledgeable in the natural and cultural history of the park. These walks begin December 15 and continue every day until March 31 with exceptions on December 25 (Christmas) and the last weekend in January for an annual fundraising event, Seal Adventure.

Año Nuevo State Park’s rich variety of natural and cultural resources draws visitors from around the world. The park’s Natural Preserve offers an extraordinary wilderness experience, where every year up to 10,000 elephant seals return to breed, give birth, and molt their skin amongst the scenic dunes and beaches.
The park features the Marine Education Center boasting a natural history exhibit, bookstore, and theater. This complex is housed in the historic nineteenth century dairy ranch of the Dickerman/Steele family. These restored buildings recall the early American settlers, while the midden sites throughout the Natural Preserve tell us the story of the Quiroste Indians that lived peacefully here for thousands of years prior to the 1600s. Cove Beach is a short walk from here for beachgoers and surfers.
The physical terrain of Año Nuevo is distinctive, with coastal terrace prairie, wetland marshes, dune fields and coastal scrub hosting a high diversity of plants and animals, including the rare and endangered San Francisco Garter Snake and California Red-legged Frog.
A hike out along ocean bluffs brings visitors to Año Nuevo Point, a major bird migratory route and fantastic birding location. Located just offshore sits Año Nuevo Island and the remains of a 19th century lighthouse and fog signal station. Built in 1872, the historic keeper’s house now provides a new home to Brandt’s and Pelagic Cormorants as well as California Sea Lions. Otters and harbor seals are often sighted in the waters and magnificent Steller Sea Lions take up residence on the outlaying rocks.
One of the largest mainland breeding colonies in the world for the northern elephant seal is at Año Nuevo State Park. A Natural Preserve has been established to protect the elephant seals along with many other animals such as otters, California sea lions, coyotes, cormorants, terns and more. Native plants and an untouched intertidal ecosystem also find shelter inside the Natural Preserve. Elephant seals can be observed here year round either on a docent lead tour or through a self guided permit system within the Wildlife Viewing Area.
During the breeding season daily access to the Natural Preserve is available only via guided walks. Visitors who hope to see the elephant seals during this season are urged to get their reservations early through Reserve America. This is the time when male elephant seals battle on the beaches for the right to mate and the females give birth to their pups on the dunes. Most of the adult seals are gone by early March, leaving behind the weaned pups who remain through April.

Elephant Seal Tour At Ano Nuevo State Park
Have you heard about the annual elephant seal migration to the beaches of Año Nuevo State Reserve?
Highly recommend the Ano Nuevo State Park and check out the elephant seal tour. It is only $7 per person (plus one state park parking $10).
These massive creatures were only a few feet away and they did not notice us. Females giving birth, pups nursing from their mother and bull males fighting one another. This is amazing experience to see & hear the bulls braying & throwing their massive weight around while claiming their turf & protecting their harem.
Some people have lived in California for over many years and never visited this park. If you live in Bay Area you have no excuse not to visit Ano Nuevo.
The tour covers approximately 3.5 miles and about 2 to 3 hours so be prepared to bring water (but no food allowed). You should book your tour online beforehand since they fill up quickly, especially on the weekends.
After your Ano Nuevo tour if you are interested in visiting 2 other parks not far in the same day, you may want to watch this video:

Elephant Seals at Ano Nuevo State Park
Song: Pepper - Tradewinds
A spontaneous drive up California Highway 1 lead to a great adventure at Ano Nuevo State Park. The trail is about three miles of ever changing land. It cuts through swamp land, huge sand dunes, and the magnificent California cost line. While on this trail, we encountered baby Elephant Seals, this was honestly scary due to their protective mother. The trail ends on a precipice that overlooks the bulk of the Elephant Seal population. They average over 1000 pounds and are immensely powerful. The day ended with a remarkable sunset. This adventure reminded me the power of spontaneity. So go out and be spontaneous, you will enjoy the trip. :)
Elephant Seals on US route 1 in northern California
Pulled over at a rest stop on the 17 mile windy coastal route and found these guys just hanging around. One of the best drives I've ever seen. Started out at dawn from Campbell, Ca and cut through the morning fog all along the very edge of where the mountains reach the sea.
