Kyoto Festival: Aoi Matsuri
Considered one of the three most important festivals in Kyoto, the Aoi Matsuri takes place on the 15th of May each year. Held by the important Kamo shrines, Kamigamo Shrine and Shimogamo Shrine, the origins of the festival can be traced all the way back rites performed to appease the gods and pray for bountiful harvests in the 6th century. It was established as a more formal annual event in the 9th century Heian Period when Kyoto became the capital and the Emperor recognized the importance of the Kamo shrines to the capitol's prosperity. Because of the aoi, (hollyhock) leaves pinned to the participants' hats, clothing, and carts, it earned the colloqial name of Hollyhock Festival over its original Kamo Festival title.
Leading up to the Aoi Matsuri are many interesting and exciting pre-rituals and ceremonies, but the main event is the grand parade on the 15th. Starting from the site of the former Imperial Palace hundreds of participants dressed in Heian Period clothing form two processions and make their way to Shimogamo Shrine and then on to Kamigamo, performing rites and making offerings at each. The first procession is the Imperial Messenger's, accompanied by court nobles, soldiers, and offerings. The second, the Imperial Princess', is made up of noble women, ladies in waiting, and priestesses. A stately and aristocratic parade, watching the Aoi Matsuri go by while listening to the ox carts distinctive creaking allows the viewer to feel like they've been transported back in time to the Heian capital. We at Kyoto Fan certainly did!
Make sure you know all the important figures who make appearences in the parade by taking a look at our video!

Kyoto Festival: Jidai Matsuri [4K]
For more information, check out the Jidai Matsuri page on our website:
Considered to be one of the top three festivals in all of Kyoto despite its status as a relatively new tradition, Heian Shrine's Jidai Matsuri (Festival of the Ages) is held on October 22nd from noon each year.
The festival is primarily composed of a two kilometer, five hour long procession of countless volunteers dressed in historical garb representing Japanese cultural history from the Meiji era all the way back to the Enryaku era in the 780’s. Painstakingly recreated and researched, going so far as to even make and dye the fabric using the same techniques as they used a thousand years ago, the procession is akin to watching a living history museum march by. Not only do famous historical figures and princesses make appearance, but warriors, priests, politicians, merchants, and commoners are all represented. With that many characters, the Jidai Matsuri gives a very comprehensive look in to the clothing and appearance of Japanese past.

The Aoi Matsuri, one of the 3 mayor festivals of Kyoto, is celebrated every year on May 15th. The parade departs from the Imperial Palace (Gosho), passes by the Shimogamo Shrine and ends at the Kamigamo Shrine.
According to records, this festival was formerly known as the Kamo Festival, and its history goes back to the year 545 a.d. On this day, more than 500 persons dressed in traditional Heian period outfit participate on the festival's procession.
The main character of the parade is the Saiou-dai, an Imperial Princess dressed in a Juni-hitoe, a ceremonial kimono with 10 layers. Historically, the Saiou-dai was chosen from the Emperor's house. Nowadays she is chosen from the unmarried women of Kyoto.

Aoi Matsuri: Oldest Festival of Kyoto, Japan 【HD】
The Aoi Matsuri, named after the green Hollyhock leaves worn by the parade participants. This tradition goes back to the year 545 a.d. and almost 1500 years later the people of Kyoto continue to preserve it and pass its unique culture, art and values to the new generations.
Usually, the Aoi Festival takes place on May 15th, but this year due to bad weather conditions, it was moved to the next day. I went to the Shimogamo Shrine, a very famous Shinto Shrine, that along with the Kamigamo Shrine is considered one of the places where the traditional Japanese culture ancient sources. This beautiful forest is called Tadasu no Mori.
At the end of the video you'll see a short equestrian show in which the participants ride their horses at full speed in front of the public.

[4K] 2019年 葵祭 Aoi Matsuri (Kyoto, Japan)

Aoi Matsuri: Saiō-Dai Lady Arriving at Kamigamo Shrine.
Today the annual Aoi Matsuri (葵祭) was held here in Kyoto, the old heir capital of Japan. The Saiō-Dai Lady (斎王代) and her entourage is seen here entering the Kamigamo shrine (上賀茂神社) in Kyoto. This is the final destination of this exquisite matsuri and the end of a long day for the participants. This year the role of the Saiō-Dai Lady (斎王代) is presented by miss Shirai Yū Tasuku (白井 優佐). She is be dressed in the traditional style of the Heian court. Traditional Heian court dress for women would be wearing several layers of exquisitely coloured silk robes. The Saiō-Dai wears twelve layers of the traditional style robes (jūnihitoe).
葵祭 京都市 2019 Aoi Matsuri Festival in Kyoto Japan

Kyoto Aoi Matsuri Festival
Sights around Kyoto and some of the Aoi Matsuri parade. Such a beautiful city! The Aoi Matsuri or Hollyhock festival (葵祭) is one of Kyoto's most famous and takes place every May 15. The festival's main attraction is a large parade in Kyoto walking from the Imperial Palace to the Kamo Shrines. The parade was different from parades in the US because the crowd kept quiet so the animals wouldn't be frightened.

Kyoto Festival: Japanese Mounted Archery at Shimogamo Shrine (Yabusume Shinji) [4K]
Every year in May Kyoto begins to buzz with excitement as the Aoi Matsuri (Hollyhock Festival), one of the three biggest festivals in the city, draws near. Though the festival procession itself falls on the 15th of the month, various rituals and ceremonial preparations begin to take place from the first week of May, drawing thousands of visitors and worshippers from around the country and from abroad. Centered on the Kamo Shrines, Shimogamo Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine, the fesitivites range from sedate purification rituals to high-paced horse races.
On May 3rd at Shimogamo Shrine, one of these prepatory events occurs within the green canapy of the Tadasu no Mori forest leading up to the shrine proper from 1pm. The Yabusame Shinji, or Mounted Archery Ritual, is conducted to pray for the safety of the procession and purify the parade route. Performed by archers of the Ogasawara school, a style that traces its history back about 850 years, riders thunder down a 500m lane firing arrows at three targets along the way. Each time an archer hit the target a cheer springs up from the assembled crowd, and the sound of thundering hoofbeats growing closer and closer let people know something exciting is about to happen. If you're in town for Golden Week or the Aoi Matsuri, be sure not to miss this dynamic ritual and display of martial prowess!
