Grants Pass, Oregon. Scott Walter takes you on a fun tour of Applegate Lake south of Grants Pass, Oregon. The lake is just west of Ashland, Oregon and Medford, Oregon. We get to peek into the mountains where the Applegate River begins it journey down to the Wild and Scenic Rogue River. We hear about Murphy, Oregon, Ruch, Oregon, Applegate, Oregon and the famous covered McKee Bridge near the Star Ranger station in the beautiful Applegate Valley. It is once again time for a road trip with Scott Walter.
Applegate Lake and Squaw Lakes Oregon Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest
Applegate Lake is a 988-acre (400 ha) reservoir located in the Rogue River – Siskiyou National Forest about 27 miles (43 km) southwest of Medford in the U.S. state of Oregon. It is 16 miles (26 km) south of Oregon Route 238 along Applegate River Road and slightly north of the Oregon–California border. The lake is an impoundment of the Applegate River about 46 miles (74 km) from its confluence with the Rogue River.[2]
Overview
Squaw Lakes Campground is nestled in the deep shade of a mixed-conifer forest on the banks of Squaw and Little Squaw Lakes. The facility provides tent-only campsites that are reachable via foot trails. The unique, remote setting offers visitors stunning scenery and access to a multitude of recreational opportunities.
Natural Features:
The Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest is composed of two distinct geological provinces: the Cascade Range and the Siskiyou Mountains. The Cascade Range is dominated by snow-capped volcanic peaks such as 9,495 foot Mt. McLoughlin within the Sky Lakes Wilderness. The Siskiyou area embodies world-class rivers, remarkable fisheries and the most complex and treasured plant communities in the Pacific Northwest.
Diverse landscapes provide habitat for a wide-range of wildlife, from spotted owls and elk to salamanders and sandhill cranes.
Recreation:
Hiking and fishing top the list of recreational opportunities at Squaw Lakes Campground. Two mountain lakes, a river and a handful of hiking trails are accessible from the campground.
Anglers enjoy the remote location and scenic backdrop of two natural lakes, providing excellent fishing opportunities for coldwater and warmwater species. Squaw Lake, larger than its sister, sustains rainbow and cutthroat trout, yellow perch, brown bullhead and black bass. Little Squaw Lake provides a rare fishery for 8-11 wild, native coastal cutthroat trout. A 0.25-mile hiking trail connects the lakes. Motors are not permitted on the lakes.
From the campground, Little Squaw Trail is a 1-mile interpretive hike that provides visitors with many opportunities for picnicking and swimming. The 2-mile Summit Lake Trail travels through a mixed conifer forest and small water crossings.
The Rogue River – Siskiyou National Forest is a United States National Forest in the U.S. states of Oregon and California. The formerly separate Rogue River and Siskiyou National Forests were administratively combined in 2004. Now, the Rogue River – Siskiyou National Forest ranges from the crest of the Cascade Range west into the Siskiyou Mountains, covering almost 1.8 million acres (7,300 km2).[4] Forest headquarters are located in Medford, Oregon.

Our goal was to turn this thru-hike adventure into a film that would raise awareness about the beauty of our region and build support for the creation of our proposed Applegate Ridge Trail and the the benefits the trails will provide to surrounding communities.

Took the Phantom 2 Vision+ out to capture some aerial shots of the Applegate Dam and Applegate Lake. Very low due to no snow pack. Oregon's been in a drought for a while but especially last few years with no snow pack. Not even Mt. Ashland was open, save for a day or two.

The Oregon Trail was laid by fur trappers and traders from about 1811 to 1840 and was only passable on foot or by horseback. By 1836, when the first migrant wagon train was organized in Independence, Missouri, a wagon trail had been cleared to Fort Hall, Idaho. Wagon trails were cleared further and further west, eventually reaching all the way to the Willamette Valley in Oregon. What came to be called the Oregon Trail was complete, even as improved roads, cutouts, ferries and bridges made the trip faster and safer almost every year.
On May 1, 1839, a group of eighteen men from Peoria, Illinois, set out with the intention of colonizing the Oregon country on behalf of the United States of America .
In what was dubbed The Great Migration of 1843 or the Wagon Train of 1843,[20][21] an estimated 700 to 1,000 emigrants left for Oregon.
From the early to mid-1830s (and particularly through the epoch years; 1846--1869) the Oregon Trail and its many offshoots were used by about 400,000 settlers, ranchers, farmers, miners, and businessmen and their families.

We are 15 miles away from Jacksonville and 30 miles away from the Medford Airport. The house is on the river so if hiking, fishing or rafting appeal to you this is ideal. But even if you never left the comfort of the house you can definitely experience the beauty of the Applegate with all of the houseguests while engaging in a multitude of activities. There's room for everyone to spread out and enjoy themselves whatever they decide to do.

This unique property has an array of outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing and rafting to enjoy. There are two bedrooms on the entry level. Both have attached bathrooms. The Master Bedroom (The Gold Room) has an open two person stone tiled shower and the other (The Blue Room) has a stone tiled shower with a bathtub. They are each gorgeous and unique in there own right. Also on this level you can cook in the luxurious kitchen with large island perfect for entertaining. There are four different seating areas to sit just in the kitchen dining area alone. You may chose to hang out in one of three living areas. One next to the kitchen with an electric fireplace, 42 flat screen TV, couches and reclining chairs to take in the company and the views. There is a place to dine downstairs as well or play poker if you choose to. There is a theatre game playing area. We've created several seating areas which to lounge around the billiards area and wet bar. The warm colored custom concrete flooring in this day light basement is ideal if you choice to relax by the gorgeous river rock fireplace. Or you may choose to relax in the suite upstairs (The Red Room) with its open stone tiled floored shower, TV, DVD, lounge area and eastern king size platform bed. There is also a spacious laundry room if you're in the mood. There really is something for everyone and not enough words to describe all of its unique beauty; you'd really have to experience it for yourself.

Bear Creek is the name of a stream located entirely within Jackson County, Oregon.
The Applegate Trail was a wilderness trail through today's U.S. states of Idaho, Nevada, California, and Oregon, and was originally intended as a less dangerous route to the Oregon Territory.
In 1843, part of the Applegate family of Missouri headed west along the Oregon Trail to the Oregon Country.[1] Charles, Jesse, and Lindsay led their families along the trail and lost two children on the journey down the Columbia River.[1] The hardships along the way influenced the family to find an easier and safer way to the Willamette Valley.[1]
Lindsay Applegate and fourteen other settlers established the South Emigrant Trail between Fort Hall in Idaho and the Willamette Valley via northern Nevada through southern Oregon where Ashland and Roseburg now lie. The intents of this route were to be safer than the Columbia River, encourage settlers to western Oregon, avoid the Hudson's Bay Company controlled area, provide a longer travel season, and steer clear of the disputed English territory north of the Columbia,[4] which most settlers expected would become the US-British Columbia border.[5]
