Glenwood Canyon is a rugged scenic 12.5 mi (20 km) canyon on the Colorado River in western Colorado in the United States. Its walls climb as high as 1,300 ft (396 m) above the Colorado River. It is the largest such canyon on the Upper Colorado. The canyon, which has historically provided the routes of railroads and highways through western Colorado, currently furnishes the routes of Interstate 70 and the Central Corridor between Denver and Grand Junction. The canyon stretches from near Dotsero, where the Colorado receives the Eagle River, downstream in a west-southwest direction to just east of Glenwood Springs, on the mouth of the Roaring Fork. Most of the canyon is in Garfield County, with the upper portion near Dotsero lying in Eagle County.
In 1906, the canyon provided the route of the Taylor State Road, a gravel road that was the first route for automobiles through the Colorado Rockies. The canyon also provided the route for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in the late 19th century. Through acquisitions, the line is currently part of the Union Pacific system. As Glenwood Canyon was one of the iconic scenic views along the California Zephyr passenger train, a monument to the dome car design was originally installed in the canyon. In the 1990s the monument was relocated to the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden to make way for the construction of Interstate 70.
The canyon is widely considered one of the most scenic natural features on the Interstate Highway System of the United States. Foot access to the canyon is available at four rest areas along Interstate 70 in the canyon. The Hanging Lake Rest Area (Exit 125) provides access to the canyon along a stretch where I-70 is concealed in the Hanging Lake Tunnel.
The canyon was formed relatively recently in Pleistocene time by the rapid cutting of the Colorado down through layers of sedimentary rock. The upper layers of the canyon are sandstone from Pennsylvanian and Mississippian. Sections of the lower canyon walls are made of Cambrian rock. The Mississippian layer that is prominent throughout much of the upper rim sections of the canyon is part of the Leadville Formation.

Summer is fast approaching us. What better way to spend it then on some trails in California?
We already gave you our Top 5 trails in the Southeast, but now it's time to sound off on the Top 5 trails in the Golden State.
At number 5 on our list is Mendocino National Forest in Northwestern California.
Going on a trail in Mendocino is a completely serene nature experience. OHV Trails include the Grindstone Ranger District and Upper Lake Ranger District Trails. The absence of paved roads or highways crossing the forest makes Mendocino the perfect place if you’re looking for tranquility and solitude.
Next on our list is California’s Imperial Sand Dunes Recreational Areas in the Southeast!
These are the largest sand dunes open to OHVs in the United States. They sprawl from Southeastern California all the way into Mexico. Going on the 1,000 square miles of the Algodones Sand Dune system should definitely get your rig ready for Baja!
After you do that check out the Mojave National Preserve which is nestled between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
Mojave is the third largest national park in the country clocking in at a massive 16 million acres. Be sure to put the Afton Canyon, Cedar Canyon, Fort Piute, Aiken Mines and Lava Tube on your wish list when planning out your trails.
Not too far from Mojave is our number 2 pick Johnson Valley.
This is home to one of the most grueling and legendary off-road competitions in the world: the King of the Hammers. The so called “hammers” are a large mass of hills that best even the most experienced off-roaders.
Extreme rock crawling isn’t all it has to offer though. You can also get your fill of open deserts, dry lake beds and sand dunes.
The trail at the top of our list needs no introduction for off-roaders; it’s the legendary Rubicon Trail. While it is only 22 miles long, Rubicon has gained a reputation for being the premiere testing ground for 4x4 enthusiasts. It is home to the Jeep Jamboree and of course gives its namesake to Rubicon variants of the Jeep Wrangler.
Famous obstacles like Post Pile, Walker Hill, Spider Lake, Chappie Rock, Buck Island Dam, Big Sluice and more are sure to give you a challenge.

Less than 1/10 of a mile southwest along Chain of Craters Road from the Hilina Pali Road turnoff is a small patch of bare ground, the parking spot for the unmarked Devil's Throat collapse crater. Devil's Throat is an excitingly vertically-sided pit crater that is worth the visit just for the okole squeezing peering down the throat will give you.
An unmarked, approximately 50 meter trail leads south east from the road along a prominent earth fracture to the 30 meter wide by 55 meter deep pit. Keep your eyes on the trail in front of you at all times as you approach. Do not allow children or exuberant adults run ahead, especially in the dark, fog or vog, as there are NO safety rails and absolutely NO warning the crater is coming up...one simply arrives, teetering, at the brink. Be extremely careful approaching the crater rim, as the edge is very unstable and prone to collapse. It is also an interesting hike to trace the prominent fracture lines back towards Hilina Pali on the northwest side of the road to the prominent fault escarpment.
Collapse pit craters are formed when magma is rapidly extruded from one portion of a subterranean magma chamber to another, or is erupted onto land. The ground above the recently evacuated portion of the magma chamber simply collapses. Essentially, the entirety of the land traversed by chain of Craters Road is pocked with these features.
Viewing and photography are best done at Devil's Throat when the sun is high in the sky and the walls and bottom of the crater are not in shadow.
Bear at Moose Lodge!!
Holy crap, this Bear was in the back yard of my Moose Lodge in Arnold CA!! It was just chomping on a bone or something it found in the woods. The bear was extremely mild and did not care I approached... So incredibly awesome!!! Nature at is best!! They were here before us!!! P.S. Steven Colbert, add this one to your WORD segment!! BEARS!!
Placer County - Lake Clementine Hike
This track to interesting sites is located a short distance from Interstate 80 in the Auburn State Recreation Area. The trail follows beside the North Fork of the American River. Hikers cross beneath the Auburn-Foresthill Bridge, the tallest in California at 730 ft. Water cascading over the Lake Clementine Dam is the highlight of the hike.

Travel Vlog to Angels Camp, California ✈️
My boyfriend and his family took me on vacation to Angels Camp, California. It was absolutely beautiful and I was so thankful I spent that week with Zac!
We stayed at Angels Camp but ventured off into Other little towns. And then to Yosemite National Park. It was my first time there and we hiked to a waterfall which was absolutely amazing.
