FREE CAMPING IN BALI - The Way Overland - Episode 23
From Nusa Penida we head back to Bali and are told about a nice spot to camp by a lake in the central mountains of Bali. Although the weather had dried up on the coast, the mountains had still been getting their fair share of the wet season. We found this out late at night whilst trying to find the camp spot driving through a flooded forest! We decided it wasn’t the best idea to camp in the forest so drove back to a carpark on the edge of Lake Buyan.
Lake Buyan is 1 of 3 lakes in the area which sit inside a huge caldera and was actually connected with one of the other lakes until about 1800 when a landslide separated them. The lakes sit at about 1200m above sea level which means that there’s always a bit of a chill in the air… a nice change to the coastal heat and humidity!
We then make a quick dash down to Denpasar to pick up Mark’s brother Mitch. We’d planned to wait for him to arrive before doing much sightseeing in Bali so that we still had lots to do while he’s with us.
First on the list is diving in Tulamben on the northeast coast. Here there is a WW2 US cargo shipwreck (US Liberty) which was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine in January 1942. The captain beached the ship where it stayed until 1963 when Mount Agung erupted causing the ship to become displaced to where it now lies just 30 metres off the beach. The wreck starts at about 3m below the surface and goes down to about 30m. Tulamben is also a protected marine area which means that there’s plenty of fish swimming around and very healthy coral. The water visibility was also fantastic!
On our first dive in the area at the other end of the beach we spotted a school of Bumphead Parrotfish, the largest of the Parrotfish family. Jolie had actually dove down and was looking at some smaller fish and when she turned around they were swimming right past her and gave her a bit of a surprise as they’re about 1 metre long each!
Mark and Mitch decided to go for a night dive in the wreck and found lots of these Parrotfish hanging out in the wreck. After doing a bit of research on these huge fish we learnt that at dusk they the come up from the depths and find places to sleep such as in wrecks and around coral until dawn where they make their journey back down again.
At one of the local restaurants we met a guy who lived in a nearby village who invited to take us out spearfishing on his small boat. Unfortunately there was only room for 3 people on the boat including him, so it was just Mark and Mitch for this one. There’s a small bamboo platform which sits about 200 metres offshore with a line going down to approximately 100 metres in crystal clear water. Although not a huge catch it was still enough to have a beach bbq (Indo style over burning coconuts husks as coals) to feed 5 adults.
After a fun few days of exploring under the waters surface, we pack up the car and start our waterfall tour of Bali. The first waterfall we went to was a little underwhelming (though still beautiful). We stayed for about 10 minutes and then moved onto the next one, Nungnung Waterfall, which was certainly a bit more impressive! To get to the falls you have to walk right down into a valley via hundreds of stairs. Not to worry though as you’re rewarded with this huge waterfall at the bottom!
Getting pretty late in the day we decided just to set the car up in the carpark of the waterfall and then keep driving the following day. A lady who owns one of the small food shops here offered to cook up some Nasi Goreng for us and then invited us around to her family home where her family where preparing the food and decorations for her Grandson’s 3rd birthday celebration the following day. All of the men prepare the food the day before for the women to cook it on the day of the celebration.
We were invited back to the celebration the next day though unfortunately it started a bit late and we were keen to get back on the road, so we had to give it a miss.
Now, driving almost back to where we started by the lake is Banyumala Waterfall. The walk down to the falls was pretty easy and there’s actually a handful of other smaller falls here if you venture just a short distance downstream.
Thanks for watching! We’d love to hear suggestions of places to visit so feel free to leave us a comment below!
Next week we have a bit of an unexpected extension of our stay in Bali, say goodbye to Mitch and then head west to Java!

September 2017
Price - I paid $77 USD per night for this full Balinese villa in the rice paddies
During our trip to Bali, I really wanted to stay in a Balinese villa, specifically surround by rice fields. So after some searching I found a place near Ubud that looked very quiet and nice.
It was a beautiful place, very relaxing and I enjoyed the entire community.
We had 2 full rooms, a swimming pool, a kitchen, and a living space. And one of the best things about staying in a Balinese villa in the rice paddies is being able to take walks and just enjoying the incredible countryside of Bali.
Our host family that owns the villa was also very kind and welcoming.
A few drawbacks:
- It's a little isolated, and you have to walk or take a motorbike out to the main road. So you have to pre-arrange transportation everyday.
- Unless you go out of the neighborhood there are no really local food options.
But overall, my family and I really enjoyed our stay.
Thank you for watching!

Trekking at Sekumpul Waterfall
For now the waterfalls in Bali which are often talked about and are a trend among foreign tourists are Sekumpul waterfalls and included in the category of hidden waterfalls in North Bali. Readers want to know why?
The reader certainly knows, one of the main things that makes the island of Bali a tourist destination, because of the beauty of the white sand beach. Most of the white sand beaches in Bali are located in southern Bali.
North Bali Tourism Object
Attractions in northern Bali, more famous for nature tourism in the hills with unspoiled waterfalls. As well as tourist activities to see dolphins on Lovina beach. Of course if you only want to see the view of the hill, surely you don't have to go on vacation to Bali. Then what about the most beautiful waterfall in Bali?
Buleleng Regency North Bali is a place that readers must visit, if you want to see the most beautiful waterfalls in Bali that are still natural. Buleleng Regency, has more than one waterfall location. The following is a list of waterfalls in Buleleng Regency.
Gitgit Waterfall.
Lemukih Waterfall.
Munduk Waterfall.
Sekumpul Waterfall.
Les Buleleng Waterfall.
The main attraction makes the Sekumpul waterfall tourist attraction famous to foreign countries, because in the Sekumpul waterfall tourist attractions, readers can not only see one or two waterfalls. But more and still in the category of hidden waterfalls in North Bali, because it requires extra effort to reach the location of the waterfall.
As the name implies, Sekumpul waterfalls consist of a collection of waterfalls, with a total of seven waterfalls. Therefore, Sekumpul waterfall is named by foreigners with another name sevent point waterfall. While the local people of Sekumpul called by the name of the loading waterfall.
Of the seven waterfalls available, only two waterfalls are located close to the main road. While the other five, the reader needs extra effort to reach its location.
At the time of the second rainy season the waterfall will have a different color, the left side of the water will be clear and clean, because it comes from a spring located above the hills of Sekumpul village. While the waterfall on the right will be murky brown, because the water comes from a river in the village Sekumpul.
Other activities that the reader can do besides seeing the view of the waterfalls and mountains that are still very natural, readers can also do prewedding photo sessions against the background of the waterfall, or just just photos with friends or family.
The location of the Sekumpul waterfall is in Sekumpul village, Sawan sub-district, Buleleng regency, Bali. It is approximately 76 km from the city of Denpasar and 20 km from the city of Singaraja. With a travel time of approximately 2.5 hours from the city of Denpasar.
Because the location of the waterfall location in the village of Sekumpul is very far away. To avoid exhausting driving a car, then we recommend that readers seek car rental services plus drivers in Bali.
For readers who are interested in visiting and seeing the scenery of Sekumpul waterfalls, while doing trekking activities. You should visit and do trekking in the morning. The time at which to start the trip is around 07:00 - 08:00 in the morning.
You must ask why you should visit Sekumpul waterfall in the morning?
There is a reason why I advise you to visit Sekumpul waterfalls in the morning. Because the chance of rain in the morning is smaller than in the afternoon. If it rains, the road you are going to take becomes slippery and you need to be extra careful to pass the slippery path.
To reach the Sekumpul waterfall location, because it is located far from attractions in southern Bali and takes about 3 hours from Kuta Bali. This requires that you depart from Kuta Bali around 4am.
At 4 am, it is too early for some people to wake up. Then how to overcome this without having to get up at 4 in the morning.
If you don't want to get up early, you can leave in the afternoon and stay at Kadek Homestay. While doing Sekumpul waterfall trekking the next day.
