Swell Shark at Seacliff
Born Jan. 22, a baby swell shark is the newest resident of Seacliff State Beach. The shark is expected to reside at the park's visitor center for 18 months, when it will be transferred to Aquarium of the Bay in San Francisco. Swell sharks are common in Monterey Bay, and can grow to four feet long.

Swell shark in Laguna Beach California
This is a small shark I found sleeping underneath a shelf on the reef a few weeks ago. I thought it was another horn shark but after examining it quickly realized that it was a different species. From what I have researched my best guess is that its a carpet shark. The rounded pectoral fins, mouth in front of it's face, and the dorsal fin being so far back on the sharks body are what really made me think this is a carpet shark. All of these features along with the unique markings on its body led me to believe this is a carpet shark, but I may be wrong. Please let me know what you think!
Authors@Google: Rick Moonen
Moonen and Finamores encyclopedic volume appears at just the right moment. Nutritional awareness has given fish cooking even more prominence within the culinary arts, and efficient transportation now brings fresh fish into the nations interior. With this book to guide both neophyte and expert, no one need any longer fear to cook any of the deeps denizens. In instructive photographs, Moonen and Finamore show how to clean, bone, and portion both finfish and shellfish. Recipes are organized by cooking method—broiling, poaching, roasting, grilling, steaming, frying—providing the creative cook some latitude in determining what to do with the fish at hand. Succeeding chapters cover such fish basics as chowders, fish cakes, and salads. A final section offers unique takes on side dishes such as coleslaw. Both the books organization and its comprehensive coverage make this a necessary addition to any cookbook collection. -- Mark Knoblauch
Rick Moonen visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book Fish Without a Doubt as part of the Authors@Google series.
