Viewing Otters in the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary
Sea Otters in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary face challenges every day to survive but we do not have to be one of those challenges. The explosion of kayak and paddle board traffic on the water has increased the disruptions to the daily lives of these otters therefore, increasing their stress and possibly leading to their early demise. The Marine Mammal Protection act states that you must maintain a distance away that does not change or alter the behavior of the animal (whether that is 10 kayak lengths or 20 kayak lengths). The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary recommends a distance of 150feet or 15 kayak lengths.
There are fewer than 3000 of this southern sea otter species left and they can only be found here in the Central California coast.
We are trying to educate people and particularly kayakers and paddle boarders to the needs of these animals and asking that we all do our part to help them survive and even grow in numbers.

Monterey, CA :
The City of Monterey in Monterey County is located on the southern edge of Monterey Bay, in the Northern Portion of California's Central Coast. It stands at an elevation of 26 feet (8 m) above sea level, on a land area of 8.466 sq mi (21.93 km2). The 2010 census recorded a population of 27,810.
Monterey was the capital of Alta California under both Spain and Mexico. It was the only port of entry for taxable goods in California. In 1846 the U.S. flag was raised over the Customs House, and California became part of the United States after the ensuing Mexican–American War.
The city had California's first theater, public building, public library, publicly funded school, printing press, and newspaper. The city and surrounding area have attracted artists since the late 19th century and many celebrated painters and writers have lived there. Until the 1950s, there was an abundant fishery.
Carmel-by-the-Sea :
Carmel-by-the-Sea, often simply referred to as Carmel, is a city in Monterey County, California, United States, founded in 1902 and incorporated on October 31, 1916. Situated on the Monterey Peninsula, Carmel is known for its natural scenery and rich artistic history. In 1906, the San Francisco Call devoted a full page to the artists, writers and poets at Carmel-by-the-Sea, and in 1910 it reported that 60 percent of Carmel's houses were built by citizens who were devoting their lives to work connected to the aesthetic arts. Early City Councils were dominated by artists, and the city has had several mayors who were poets or actors, including Herbert Heron, founder of the Forest Theater, bohemian writer and actor Perry Newberry, and actor-director Clint Eastwood.
The city is known for being dog-friendly, with numerous hotels, restaurants and retail establishments admitting guests with dogs. Carmel is also known for several unusual laws, including a prohibition on wearing high-heel shoes without a permit, enacted to prevent lawsuits arising from tripping accidents caused by irregular pavement.

BeachCOMBERS: Taking the Pulse of the Sanctuary
This video describes a beach survey program called Coastal Ocean Mammal and Bird Education and Research Surveys (Beach COMBERS) using trained volunteers to survey beached marine birds and mammals monthly at selected sections of beaches in the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
The program is a collaborative project between Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary along with other state and research institutions including California Department of Fish and Game, Marine Wildlife Veterinary Care and Research Center, and the University of California Davis. The project uses deposition of beach cast carcasses as an index of the health of the Sanctuary.
This program has been greatly successful providing data for a number of scientific papers contributing to the conservation of sanctuary resources, identifying and quantifying oiled wildlife, and a great many more accomplishments.
Thanksgiving in Monterey, California! 2015
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and this year we went back to one of my favorite childhood vacation spots, Monterey. Monterey Bay is on the Central Coast of California and is absolutely gorgeous. There's endless beautiful scenery and tons of sea life - everything from adorable sea otters at the aquarium to moody elephant seals at a rookery. Ultimately, we ended up packing a lot into our little mini family vacation:
Day 1: Seventeen Mile Drive, Eatin' Turkey, & Hunger Games!
Day 2: Monterey Bay Aquarium
Day 3: Hearst Castle & the Pacific Coast Highway
