The Walsingham Way
Historically, Walsingham, in Norfolk, England, was one of the the four great shrines of medieval Christendom, ranking beside Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago da Compostella and was visited by thousands of pilgrims from all over Europe, including nearly all the kings and queens of England from Henry III to Henry VIII.
Tour of The Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, April 2016
This video is a tour of the famous Shrine of Our Lady of Walshingham in Norfolk, as it appeared upon my visit in April 2016. The Shrine was initially founded by Lady Richeldis in 1061; destroyed by Henry VIII in 1538 and then restored by Father Hope Batten, the Anglican Vicar of Walsingham in 1922. The history of this beautiful location is vast spanning over 1,000 years and is well worth a visit. Today, it still remains a place of holy pilgrimage, and is a very tranquil and peaceful haven.

Praying with Mary - Archbishop Justin Welby at the Walsingham National Pilgrimage 2019
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, and others reflect on the importance of Walsingham and how praying with Mary points us to Jesus. The Archbishop was visiting the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham during this year's National Pilgrimage, 27 May 2019.
Walsingham Church,Norfolk
From the beginning of time some places have been regarded as especially holy; places of mystery and atmosphere. Walsingham in England (United Kingdom) has been such a place for almost a thousand years since Richeldis de Faverches was inspired by Mary to build a Shrine in perpetual memorial of the Annunciation. One of the greatest Shrines in Medieval Christendom -- when travel to the Holy Land was virtually impossible -- the original Shrine was destroyed at the Reformation.
Many barren years passed until the Slipper Chapel, a 14th century wayside pilgrim chapel, was restored and pilgrimage to Walsingham began once more. In 1934, the English Bishops named the Slipper Chapel, the Roman Catholic National Shrine of Our Lady.

Our Lady of Walsingham Shrine, Catholic, Mary's Dowry, Norfolk, England 4K
The Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham is a Church of
England shrine church built in 1938 in Walsingham, Norfolk,
England. Walsingham is the site of the reputed Marian apparitions
to Richeldis de Faverches in 1061. The Virgin Mary is therefore
venerated at the site with the title of Our Lady of Walsingham.
Father Alfred Hope Patten SSC, appointed as the Church of
England Vicar of Walsingham in 1921, ignited Anglican interest
in the pre-Reformation pilgrimage. It was his idea to create a new
statue of Our Lady of Walsingham based on the image depicted on
the seal of the medieval priory. In 1922 the statue was set up in
the Parish Church of St Mary and regular pilgrimage devotion followed.
From the first night that the statue was placed there, people
gathered around it to pray, asking Mary to join her prayers with theirs.
Throughout the 1920s the trickle of pilgrims became a flood of
large numbers for whom, eventually, the Pilgrim Hospice was opened
(a hospice is the name of a place of hospitality for pilgrims) and,
in 1931, a new Holy House encased in a small pilgrimage church was
dedicated and the statue translated there with great solemnity. In 1938
that church was enlarged to form the Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of
Walsingham. Father Patten combined the posts of Vicar of Walsingham
and priest administrator of the Anglican shrine until his death in 1958.
Enid Chadwick contributed to the artwork in the shrine.
The Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham has a holy well known for
its healing properties; Christian pilgrims receiving water from the holy
well is accompanied by the laying on of hands and anointing. Holy water
from the holy well at Anglican Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham is often
taken home by the faithful and distributed to their family, friends, and
parishioners.
