Belleview Biltmore Hotel Flyover
The Belleview Biltmore Resort and Spa is a historic resort hotel located at 25 Belleview Boulevard in the town of Belleair, Florida, USA. The 820,000 square feet (76,000 m2) hotel structure is the last remaining grand historic hotel of its period in Florida that exists as a resort, and the only remaining Henry Plant hotel still in operation. The building is noted for its architectural features, with its unique green sloped roof and white wood sided exterior, and extensive hand crafted woodwork and Tiffany glass inside. It is said to be the largest occupied wood frame structure in the world, and is constructed of native Florida pine wood.
The Belleview Biltmore is situated along the eastern shores of Old Clearwater Bay, with views of the bay and the barrier islands which border the Gulf of Mexico. The hotel was built in 1897 by railroad tycoon Henry B. Plant and was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on December 26, 1979. The designation does not protect it from demolition and its owner planned to demolish the hotel in 2012 and to replace it with condos. In December of 2013, plans to restore the hotel were proposed.
The hotel property consists of over 160 acres (65 ha), including swimming pools, a beach club, restaurant, and a golf course. The hotel itself is located on 20.203 acres (8.176 ha) and has ballroom facilities and is a popular location for weddings and other gatherings.
The Belleview Biltmore has hosted many famous people, dignitaries and world leaders through the years, including U.S. Presidents Barack Obama, George H. W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, and Gerald Ford, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and the Duke of Windsor, and celebrities such as Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, Thomas Edison, and Henry Ford. The hotel is thought by some to be the site of ghost sightings and other paranormal events. The Hotel was featured in a segment on the Weird Travels series on the Travel Channel television network in the U.S., which was filmed in March 2004 by Authentic Entertainment. Ghost Stories of the Belleview Biltmore Hotel have been documented at which contains one of the largest online galleries of interior and exterior photos of the hotel.*

JMC Communities announced Thursday that it also will spend $13 million to move and convert part of the original building into a boutique hotel.
Ranging up to 3,676 square feet, the two- and three-bedroom Belleview Place condos start in the mid $600,000s. That includes the initiation fee for a golf and social membership in the Belleair Golf and Country Club, which has a full-service restaurant and bar, a resort-style pool, a fitness center and a marina.
We are very pleased to be 50 percent sold in that first building, and these are firm contracts, not reservations,'' Mike Cheezem, JMC's chief executive officer, said Thursday. When completed in three years, Belleview Place will have a total of 104 condos in four buildings as well as 28 two-story carriages houses with double-car garages.
Built in 1897 by railroad magnate Henry Plant, the iconic hotel was often billed as the world's largest occupied wooden structure. Its guest list included Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Bob Dylan, Margaret Thatcher and Barack Obama.
But the hotel's fate was sealed when previous owners sold off the golf course and waterfront property to pay bills. The number of guests plunged, the rambling structure fell into disrepair and JMC Communities bought it last year for $6.2 million.
Cheezem said he is preserving a 38,000 square-foot section of the hotel including the lobby, where rail passengers disembarked on one side and carriage passengers on the other. Renamed the Belleview Inn, it will be moved to the terminus of a new boulevard where we are 90 percent complete putting in date palms and flowering bushes,'' he said. It gives you that Old Florida feeling as you drive up.''
The inn will have an ice cream parlor, a Tiffany Room'' incorporating some of the hotel's original Tiffany stained glass and a history room telling the stories of Plant and his hotel. It will also include what Cheezem calls a small, beautiful venue'' that can accommodate up to 75 guests for weddings and other functions.
That inn will really become the social center for the Belleview Place community and for a lot of homes in the area,'' Cheezem said, noting that there are several hundreds houses nearby.
Like the Biltmore, the inn and surrounding residences will have white exterior walls and green gable roofs.
Past projects of St. Petersburg-based JMC include the Florencia and Ovation condo towers and Rowland Place mid-rise in downtown St. Petersburg, and the Sandpearl Resort and Belle Harbor condominiums on Clearwater Beach.

During a brief lull in the hotel-sponsored ghost hunt I attended, I photographed this hallway scene in the beautiful, historic Belleview Biltmore Hotel a few months before it closed in May 2009. Episode 44 WOW. And I Mean WOW. Belleair Florida Is Growing!
The new Belleair address for luxury resort-style living
Set high on a bluff with magnificent views of Clearwater Harbor, a new gated community of just 132 luxury condos and two-story carriage homes (where flood insurance is not required!). Just a few short steps from the Belleair Golf & Country Club and minutes from world-famous Clearwater Beach. A private and prestigious community offering extraordinary amenities and a resort lifestyle, from a builder with a track record of excellence.
Ideal Location
Starting from the mid $600s, Belleview Place is located in the town of Bellair, neighboring Clearwater Beach, Florida. Nestled between the world famous Clearwater Beach and Tampa Bay, this community has access to the best the area has to offer.
Set 35 feet above the bluffs of Clearwater Harbor, it’s easy to see why railroad magnate Henry Plant chose this spot for his legendary Belleview Biltmore Hotel. It’s picturesque. It’s private. It’s prestigious. And it’s equally clear why buyers are eagerly claiming new homes in Belleview Place, a 21st-century luxury retreat now under construction in the same location.
Resort Living
Belleview Place opens the door to maintenance-free living, offering a resort lifestyle with more time for family, friends and a wide array of amenities. The community offers 132 brand-new, maintenance-free homes nestled in the well-established enclave of Belleair, Florida. Barely two miles south of busy downtown Clearwater, yet tranquility prevails behind the gated entry.
The initiation fee at neighboring Belleair Country Club’s two golf courses, activities and social facilities is included for a limited time. The lobby and 35 rooms of the historic hotel soon to be restored and reopened on site as the Belleview Inn.
The History
The Belleview Biltmore Resort and Spa was an historic resort hotel located at 25 Belleview Boulevard in the town of Belleair, Florida, United States. The 820,000 square feet (76,000 m2) hotel structure was the last remaining grand historic hotel of its period in Florida that existed as a resort, and the only Henry Plant hotel still in operation when it closed in 2009. The building was noted for its architectural features, with its unique green sloped roof and white wood sided exterior, and extensive hand crafted woodwork and Tiffany glass inside. The hotel was built in 1897 by railroad tycoon Henry B. Plant and was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on December 26, 1979.
The hotel closed in 2009 and thereafter the property deteriorated from neglect. Despite the venerable hotel's historic designation and efforts by preservation groups to save it, various proposals to restore the property as a resort hotel were unsuccessful and the owners began demolition in 2015 for planned condominiums.
The hotel property consists of over 160 acres (65 ha), including swimming pools, a beach club, restaurant, and a golf course. The hotel itself is located on 20.203 acres (8.176 ha) and has ballroom facilities and is a popular location for weddings and other gatherings.

Belleview Biltmore Hotel Demolition
Demolition of the historic Belleview Biltmore Hotel has begun. The abandoned hotel property will make way for townhomes and condominiums.
The Biltmore opened in the late 1890s. The once majestic hotel started decaying after the roof was damaged by several hurricanes back in 2004. The hotel then closed its doors in 2009 and has fallen into disrepair ever since. In this video shot on 8-04-15 shows the roof removed showing the old hotel rooms.
