Το Μουσείο Μπενάκη Ισλαμικής Τέχνης στεγάζεται στο νεοκλασικό συγκρότημα που βρίσκεται στο ιστορικό κέντρο της Αθήνας, κοντά στον αρχαιολογικό χώρο του Κεραμεικού. Στην ίδια περιοχή βρίσκονται σημαντικοί αρχαιολογικοί χώροι, όπως η Αρχαία Αγορά με το δωρικό ναό του Ηφαίστου (Θησείο) και το Μουσείο στη Στοά του Αττάλου, καθώς και το αρχαίο Νεκροταφείο του Κεραμεικού με το ομώνυμο μουσείο. Το κτηριακό συγκρότημα επί των οδών Αγίων Ασωμάτων 22 και Διπύλου 12, περιήλθε στο Μουσείο Μπενάκη το 1988 από δωρεά του Λάμπρου Ευταξία ο οποίος διετέλεσε Επίτιμος Πρόεδρος της Διοικητικής Επιτροπής του Μουσείου.

BENAKI MUSEUM [Μουσείο Μπενάκη]
The Benaki Museum, established and endowed in 1930 by Antonis Benakis in memory of his father Emmanuel Benakis, is housed in the Benakis family mansion in downtown Athens, Greece. The museum houses Greek works of art from the prehistorical to the modern times, an extensive collection of Asian art, hosts periodic exhibitions and maintains a state-of-the-art restoration and conservation workshop. Although the museum initially housed a collection that included Islamic art, Chinese porcelain and exhibits on toys, its 2000 re-opening led to the creation of satellite museums that focused on specific collections, allowing the main museum to focus on Greek culture over the span of the country's history.
Το Μουσείο Μπενάκη είναι ένα από τα πιο γνωστά μουσεία της Αθήνας. Ιδρύθηκε το 1929 από τον Αντώνη Μπενάκη στην μνήμη του πατέρα του Εμμανουήλ Μπενάκη και στεγάζεται στην οικία της ιστορικής από την Αλεξάνδρεια οικογένειας Μπενάκη.
Η προσφορά της οικογένειας Μπενάκη στη πολιτική, κοινωνική και την πολιτιστική ζωή της Αθήνας, αλλά και γενικότερα της Ελλάδας κρίνεται ανεκτίμητη.
Το μουσείο φιλοξενεί στους τρεις ορόφους αντιπροσωπευτικά έργα όλων των εποχών της Ελληνικής ιστορίας και τέχνης από την προιστορική εποχή μέχρι τους σύγχρονους καιρούς. Η αρχική συλλογή του Αντώνη Μπενάκη που αποτελεί και τον πυρήνα της συλλογής του μουσείου περιελάμβανε έργα αρχαίας Βυζαντινής, μεταβυζαντινής, ισλαμικής και παραδοσιακής τέχνης. Στις συλλογές του μουσείου περιλαμβάνονται επίσης έργα Ασιατικής (Κινέζικης κυρίως) και Κοπτικής τέχνης. Ιδιαίτερα σημαντικά το τμήμα των Φωτογραφικών Αρχείων του Μουσείου Μπενάκη που ιδρύθηκε το 1973 με στόχο τη συγκέντρωση, διαφύλαξη, καταγραφή και ταξινόμηση φωτογραφιών από μνημεία και αντικείμενα παλαιοχριστιανικής, βυζαντινής και μεταβυζαντινής τέχνης αλλά γρήγορα επεκτάθηκε με αγορές ή δωρεές σε φωτογραφίες τέχνης. Ενδεικτικά, φιλοξενούνται έργα των γνωστών Ελλήνων φωτογράφων Nelly's, Βούλας Παπαϊωάννου, Περικλή Παπαχατζηδάκη, Δημήτρη Χαρισιάδη, Νικόλαου Ρίζου, Νικόλαου Τομπάζη. Κατά τη διάρκεια της λειτουργίας του, διάφορα έργα τέχνης, συλλογές αλλά και κτίρια έχουν δωρηθεί στο μουσείο όπως η έπαυλη Κουλούρα στο Φάληρο που πρόκειται να φιλοξενήσει το Μουσείο παιγνιδιών. Πρόσφατα το μουσείο άνοιξε νέα παραρτήματα το Κτίριο της Οδού Πειραιώς που στεγάζει μεταξύ άλλων τα αρχεία Νεοελληνικής Αρχιτεκτονικής, το νέο Μουσείο Ισλαμικής Τέχνης, την πινακοθήκη Νίκου Χατζηκυριάκου Γκίκα και την οικία της Πηνελόπης Δέλτα στην Κηφισιά που αποτελεί την έδρα του ιστορικού Αρχείου του Iδρύματος Μπενάκη.

documenta 14 enters into a dialogue with four of the museum’s branches: the building complex in Kerameikos, which houses the Islamic art collections; the Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika Gallery; the Mentis Center for the preservation of traditional textile techniques; and the new building on Pireos Street that hosts a major part of the documenta 14 public exhibition. The exhibition halls of the architecturally inward-looking structure evolve around its perimeter, looking through openings to the central courtyard. At the Pireos Annexe, which thus far has been been used to present a diverse program of guest exhibitions, beyond the scope of the Benaki’s permanent collection, there is an opportunity to investigate untold, unfinished, or otherwise overshadowed histories and to take inspiration from novel museologies, such as those put forth by artists themselves.
