Hiking in Florida: Black Bear Wilderness Area Loop Trail
If you're looking for something to do around Orlando Florida then we have the trail for you. I was visiting some family around Orlando and decided to hike a Florida trail. The Black Bear Wilderness Area Loop trail is 7.1 long miles and is in Sanford. We saw a bunch of wetland wildlife on this day hike which runs along the St. John's river for a while. We decided not to do any swamp hiking this time around but it was really neat to see how different hiking in Florida is from the other parts of the country I've been.

Black Bear Wilderness Area
Black Bear Wilderness Area in Sanford, FL. The hiking trail is a 7.1 mile loop which runs partially along the St. John's River. Lots of alligators, snakes, birds, wild pigs, and more. The trail runs along an old levee system with water on both sides for about half of the trail. It was dry when I hiked it in December, but can see that it could be wet or underwater in sections during the rainy season. There are tree roots to navigate and some drop offs caused by Hurricane Irma flooding, but overall the trail is in good shape.
Black Bear Wilderness
A surprising wild and quiet preserve on the edge of urban Sanford, Black Bear Wilderness Area offers both a rugged 7 mile loop hike and this easier and scenic 2.5-mile round-trip from the trailhead to the St. Johns River.

Hiking at Black Bear Wilderness Area
I hiked along some really neat boardwalks on these trails that take you by the St Johns River. This boardwalk has a ladder that takes you down to a dock along the river. There are some nice views out here and really excellent trails!

St. Johns River at Black Bear Wilderness Area
The preserve has an array of habitats, which include Mixed Hardwood Swamp, Floodplain Swamp, Floodplain Marsh and Hydric Hammock. The trail system takes you through the Hydric Hammock and onto an historic levee to its end at the St. Johns River. From the levee and boardwalk area you can walk a nice trail along the banks the river and offers some great views.

Primitive Campsite at Black Bear Wilderness Area
This is a primitive campsite located along the loop trail at Black Bear Wilderness Area. It is a really nice spot right off of the trail but is also next to the St. Johns River so you can possibly access it by boat as well. There is plenty of space to set up and enjoy the beautiful wilderness here!

Florida Black Bear Abundance Study
As part of a study to estimate bear abundance in Florida, researchers set up remote cameras at some of the 273 hair snares used to collect bear hair in central and northern Florida. This video contains footage of Florida black bears that was taken by the remote cameras set up at various bear snare sites. The DNA in the bear hair will be analyzed to identify individual bears. The pattern at which individual bears visited hair snares over the six 1-week monitoring periods provided data to estimate bear numbers. The cameras measured the length of time it took for the first bear to visit the hair snare. This information may provide researchers a way to estimate bear density in the future without the expense of DNA analysis! More on Florida's largest land mammal:
