The Adirondacks
Created in 1892 by the New York State Legislature, the Adirondack Park is unlike any other park in this country or the world. By far the largest state park in the country, and one of the oldest, this beautiful region encompasses nearly 6 million acres (an area the size of the state of Vermont) of pristine wilderness and breathtaking landscape at every turn. Contained within its Blue Line - which outlines the park's boundaries - are public and private lands that are enjoyed, yet stringently protected and preserved.

The Meaning of Saranac
Saranac. The word conjures up visions of clear lakes, open skies and breathtaking mountains. To the native people of our land, the Iroquois, the word means Cluster of Stars. They lived with the beauty and serenity that was inherent to the lake and surrounding area. We borrow that name in the spirit with which it was created. We brew our Saranac line of beers from the pure water that flows from the Adirondacks and the grains that grow in its unspoiled soil.
Just Some Family History:
The Matt Brewing Company was founded in 1888 by German-born immigrant Francis Xavier Matt, or F.X. as he liked to be called. After Prohibition, F.X., then 74, was joined by his sons Walter and Frank. Walter Matt, who served as company president until 1980, is credited with increasing sales and many building renovations, including the model brewhouse and Tour Center.

Today, under the leadership of the third and fourth generations of the Matt family, the brewery still crafts beer to the exacting standards set forth over a century ago.
True to their German brewing heritage, the Matt Brewery Company has earned its reputation as one of the country's most respected brewers of specialty beers. In each bottle of Saranac, you'll find a commitment to quality and patient attention to detail that is the signature of the Matt Brewing Company.
Nick Matt
In 1989, Nick Matt joined the Brewery as president and has led the effort to re-focus the brewery's business. In 2008, Nick was announced Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of the brewery. He has guided the development of the Saranac brand and successfully led the Brewery into new areas of growth and expansion, including successful line extensions and seasonals in the Saranac Family and new specialty products, like 1888 Tavern Root Beer. Before joining the family brewing business, Nick enjoyed a successful career as President and General Manager of Procter & Gamble's Vick's Health Care Division. He received his MBA from the Johnson School of Management at Cornell University. He also spent three years as a United States Naval Officer after obtaining a BA degree from Union College in 1967. Nick and his wife Susan have three children.

Our Red IPA is a twist on a traditional west coast IPA featuring a deep red color from European dark caramel malts. We brew with generous amounts of American hops including Calypso, Palisade and Chinook to give this IPA a distinctive hop aroma. You'll notice a strong hoppy flavor with caramel malt undertones and a unique color that gives this IPA a whole new personality!

Southern Tier Iniquity is an Imperial Black IPA, which is also called an Imperial India Brown Ale. This is a style that seems to be increasing in popularity. The hexagram talisman has been used around the world for centuries to invoke magic and good luck. Wishes of good fortune often collaborate with the brewer's creative to yield dramatic results. We carefully chose the name for this Imperial IBA, Iniquity - a word opposing goodness. Why? This beer is contrary to what one might expect from an IPA; this is an ale as black as night. It is the antithesis of Unearthly. Some may consider it an immoral act to blacken an ale. We suggest they don't rely on conventional standards. Allow the darkness to consume you. Iniquity weighs in at 9% alcohol by volume. It uses four different hops and 2-row pale malt along with debittered black malt in it's brewing.

In operation since late 2002, Southern Tier Brewing Company of Lakewood, New York, has grown to produce more than 90,000 barrels of beer annually. The hand crafted ales are now available in more than thirty States and points beyond.
Founders Phineas DeMink and Allen Skip Yahn started the brewery with the vision of reviving the practice of small batch brewing to a region rich in brewing tradition. In 2002, with equipment gained from the purchase of the Old Saddleback Brewing Co. in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, the Southern Tier Brewing Company began production in the Stoneman Business Park just outside of Lakewood, New York. By 2003, select varieties of small batch ales were locally distributed, and by 2005, sales covered the majority of New York State and Pennsylvania. Before launching a successful roster of seasonal beers, the brewery produced Pilsner, Mild Ale, and India Pale Ale.
Southern Tier immediately garnered regional attention and demand for the product quickly outgrew what their modest facility could handle. In 2009 a new 20,000 square foot building was built for the purpose of brewing innovative, high-quality beer to accommodate an expanding customer base. In this new facility, the small brewery was able to grow and offer the product both nationally and internationally, while still satisfying its loyal fans.

Steadily growing, throughout 2010 it became clear that more beer needed to be produced to satisfy a growing customer base. 800 barrels of fermentation vessels were added to the production area and a 7500 square foot addition was added for use as a conditioning room. The constantly running brew house has also been expanded and updated from 20 BBL to a 50BBL system. In keeping pace with the expanded brewing capacity, the company replaced its bottling line with the most high-tech, state of the art bottling line of its size in North America. It fills, caps and labels an impressive 10,000 bottles per hour at full speed. Our cellar was expanded to allow for more than 3200 BBL of fermentation space as of late 2011 and then again in 2012 to more than 7200 BBL.
In 2012 our new brewhouse installation began and wrapped up in early 2013. The first liquid began flowing through the 110 barrel Steinecker brewhouse in March of 2013. Built in Germany, we actually assembled the building around the new brewhouse. Overlooking the new brewhouse is a tasting room and the ending point of our Saturday afternoon tours. With 14 fresh draught lines, it is a pleasant place to enjoy samples of our many beers.
The autumn of 2013 has seen more construction on our expanding campus. A 45,000 sq. ft. warehouse and distribution center is rapidly being built as well as a wastewater treatment facility. Onward.

Rivers have always served as biological highways, connecting
together different locations in a kind of riparian web. As humans
continue encroaching on habitat throughout the Midwest, the
Missouri River has become an even more important corridor of
wildlife dispersal.
Todd Meese’s work with the Missouri Dept. of Conservation has
revealed this importance with several species, both those that
use the water itself as a highway and those that use the ribbon
of forest along the Missouri River as cover for their travels.
Meese will talks about tracking the movement of the
increasing number of mountain lions sighted in the state (55
confirmed sightings since 2002). By detailed DNA analysis, he and
his colleagues determine most of these are juvenile
cats that originated in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Evidence
points to the animals using the Missouri and Platte River (NE)
corridors as their dispersal highway.
MDC tracks the movement of otters and beaver,
both of which use the Missouri River and its tributaries to
expand their territory with growing populations. Using these and
other species as examples, Meese with talk about the unique
stories of these animals as well as the general concept of our
river valleys as important corridors of wildlife movement and
habitat expansion.
