Kēʻē Beach; Waikapala'e Wet Cave; Tunnels Beach aka Makua Beach at Hāʻena Point 32
Hā’ena State Park is located at the North-Western extent of Kuhio Highway on Kaua'i’s North Shore. The park offers viewing of restored lo’i kalo (taro fields) and ancient sea caves (a.k.a. Wet Caves) formed during a higher stand of the sea, probably 4,000 years ago, as well as, the spectacular Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park. The park also offers beach-related activities including shore fishing and swimming at Kēʻē Beach. Hā’ena is also home to the trailhead of the world famous Kalalau Trail [11 miles], as well as, Hanakāpīʻai Falls Trail [2 miles], and is now subject to daily visitor limits and requires advanced reservations to enter the park. State of Hawaiʻi residents are not subject to the new park fees or reservation system.
Kēʻē Beach is located at the western edge of the park. This beach is located west from Tunnels Beach (aka Makua Beach at Hāʻena Point), which refers to the large waves that are thought to be ideal for surfing. Kēʻē Beach has a unique reef lagoon, which allows the water to be calm and attractive for snorkeling and swimming.
The three caves, Manini-holo Dry Cave, and Waikapala'e & Waikanaloa Wet Caves in this area were formed when sea levels were much higher and sand and surf carved them out.
Waikapala'e is one of two wet caves here and is accessible via a short, uphill trail that leads from a parking lot near the first wet cave, Waikanaloa. If you are in the mood for an icy dip, this cave offers an unusual experience. At the back of the main cave there is an opening to a smaller cave called The Blue Room. You can only get there by swimming. When you look back to where the sun is shining in the cave the whole room turns blue.
Both wet caves are fed from underground springs which dump into the ocean. The level of water in the caves is affected by the tide. The blue effect is most striking when the water level is higher.
One word of caution, as with any freshwater on the island there is a possible threat of leptospirosis, a deadly bacteria - don't go swimming if you have any open wounds and do not drink the water.
From Hā'ena, take Highway 560 West. Both wet caves are located on the left just before Mile Marker #10, past the Hā'ena Beach Park. A short trail uphill leads to this cave.
Государственный парк Хаʻэна расположен в северо-западной части автомагистрали Кухио на северном побережье Кауаи. Из парка открывается вид на восстановленные lo’i kalo (поля таро) и древние морские пещеры (a.k.a.

The Basic Travel Couple journey began in 2015 at a local Buffalo, NY Establishment in the heart of the Elmwood Village. A few moments after first setting eyes on one another, a very fiery debate began over (what else) traveling and who was the better wedding date (Still to be determined…lol).
2 weeks later we embarked on our first trip and second date to Chicago for a friend's wedding (Using Travel Points). While visiting the Beantown we quickly recognized that each of us shared a burning desire to explore the world with an emphasis on saving money through Basic Traveling. Since that moment; our love for travel has grown and we have been blessed to visit Key West, Costa Rica, Thailand, Jamaica, Iceland, Finland, Hawaii, Egypt, Greece and dozens of cities throughout the United States all through Basic Traveling.
When traveling, our passion goes far above a typical beach day, although those are certainly necessary! Our emphasis when planning a trip is on including the right amount of adventure and excitement with plenty of time to rest and relax. We spend weeks (sometimes months) narrowing down our travel plans and the activities we want to embark on. Since we both work full time, we typically have a limited time frame during each of these Basic Travel Trips and attempt to fit as much fun in as we can to maximize our experience.
We thoroughly enjoy helping our friends and family go on amazing trips and create long-lasting memories for next to nothing using Basic Traveling. If you are someone that wants to Jump Out of a Plane in Hawaii, Sleep in a Glass Igloo in Finland, or go on a $4,782 4-night trip at an All-Inclusive resort in Jamaica for $280 then you are in the right place. Night snorkeling with Giant Manta Rays with Splashers- Kona,Hawaii [September 2013]
For my birthday, we went night snorkeling with the Giant Manta Rays living by Kona on the Big Island. We took a boat that brought us to a spot after all the other boats have left and pretty much have all the manta rays all to ourselves. No divers at the bottom and not 20 boats around us...it was just us and the manta rays and it was great.. You can hear my giggle and laugh because they really got up close. Some even touched me.

Night Snorkeling with Manta Rays, December 2013
Highlights from our night snorkeling adventure with manta rays off the Kona coast, December 2013.
We were in the water for about 50 min with manta rays swimming all around us. Went with Kona Ocean Adventures who did a great job; I would definitely recommend them if you want to get in the water with manta rays.

GETTING LOST IN HAWAII
After only knowing each other for a year and a half, Mark and I decided to take a trip to Hawaii. Almost 2 weeks exploring three of the islands: Oahu, Big Island, and Maui. We got lost a lot, and soon realized we didn't always need to know where we were going; but to just enjoy where we were in the moment. We had so many amazing experiences and learned a lot about each other, as well as ourselves, along the way. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Hawaii is definitely the type of place you wanna come back to over and over.

Ali in 2016: I got lost on the most dangerous hike in Hawaii
The title is not an exaggeration, Pu’u Manamana genuinely has a lot of stupid tourists (like us) die every year.
Follow me on Twitter:
We got lost after the second waterfall - after going on what we thought was a trail, but turned out to be just an animal track. Instead of turning back, we pushed on, and got really lost. No mobile phone signal, or The incline was crazy, as was the mud - I never got my backpack clean despite literally showering with it. We found the second waterfall and the trail - and got out of the jungle just as the night fell. Some guy saw us come out and literally said you guys were cutting it kinda close. Then we took the bus back to the hotel and tracked mud into their fancy lobby. Totally insane day.
