CASTIGLIONE DEI PEPOLI WWII SOUTH AFRICAN & BRITISH COMMONWEALTH MEMORIAL CEMETERY. Cimitero militare sudafricano di Castiglione dei Pepoli, provincia di Bologna, Emilia Romagna, Italia. Collocato all'ingresso nord del capoluogo è uno dei 37 cimiteri di guerra del Commonwealth in Italia. Fu iniziato nel novembre del 1944 dai militari della VI Divisione Corazzata sudafricana, entrata a Castiglione dei Pepoli alla fine di settembre e rimasta nella zona fino all'aprile successivo. Accoglie le salme di 502 caduti di cui 401 sudafricani (399 fanti e 2 avieri), 99 britannici e 2 indiani provenienti direttamente dai campi di battaglia degli Appennini. Il cimitero si deve al progetto dell'architetto Louis De Soissons, disegnatore di altri cimiteri di guerra. Il 3 settembre 1943 le Forze Alleate avevano iniziato la liberazione della penisola italiana, in coincidenza con l'armistizio firmato dagli italiani. L'avanzata degli Alleati fu bloccata durante i due successivi inverni: nel 1943 lungo la linea difensiva tedesca Gustav e nel 1944 sulla linea Gotica. All'inizio dell'aprile 1945 gli Alleati lanciarono l'offensiva finale contro le ultime resistenze tedesche in via di dissolvimento e si fecero strada rapidamente nella pianura padana.

Sangro River War Cemetery - Abruzzo Italy
Sangro River War Cemetery (Italian: Cimitero britannico di Torino di Sangro) is a British and Commonwealth war cemetery sited by a hillside near Torino di Sangro in the Province of Chieti, Italy.
In this cemetery are buried 2,542 soldiers from the United Kingdom and the British Commonwealth who died in World War II defending the shoreline near the Sangro River against the retreating German soldiers on the Winter Line.
Within the cemetery is the Sangro River Cremation Memorial, which commemorates 517 Indian soldiers cremated in accordance with their faith.[1] The marble gravestones are arranged in such a way as to form a kind of amphitheatre.
A path follows a row of magnolias to the Croce del Sacrificio (Cross of Sacrifice). Another path follows a hawthorn hedge to the Porta della Rimembranza (Door of Remembrance).

Amongst the burials lies Major John Thompson McKellar Anderson (1918–1943) who received the Victoria Cross for action at Longstop Hill, Tunisia, in April 1943.[2]
Il cimitero militare britannico di Torino di Sangro (in inglese Sangro River War Cemetery) è un cimitero militare sito sul pendio di una collina in contrada Sentinella, nel comune di Torino di Sangro, in provincia di Chieti.
Il cimitero, progettato dall'architetto Louis de Soissons, è gestito dalla Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC). Lo stesso architetto progettò il vicino Cimitero militare canadese, nei pressi di Ortona, in memoria dei soldati Alleati morti nella battaglia di Ortona.
Nel cimitero sono seppelliti 2617 militari provenienti da territori del Commonwealth britannico, di cui 2542 identificati e 75 ignoti, caduti nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale durante la battaglia per lo sfondamento della linea Gustav sul fiume Sangro, nel novembre - dicembre del 1943 [1].
Le tombe, costituite da lapidi di marmo, sono disposte in modo da formare una corona semicircolare.
Un sentiero fiancheggiato da filari di magnolie porta alla Croce del sacrificio. Un altro sentiero contornato da siepi di biancospino porta alla Pietra della Rimembranza.
A seconda della nazionalità i caduti si possono suddividere in:
1768 del Regno Unito;
2 del Canada;
3 dell'Australia;
355 della Nuova Zelanda;
74 del Sudafrica;
335 dell'India e del Pakistan;
5 di altri stati;
75 militi ignoti.
È inoltre presente un memoriale a ricordo di 517 caduti indiani, cremati in accordo alla loro fede religiosa[2].
Il cimitero si trova nei pressi della Riserva naturale regionale della lecceta litoranea di Torino di Sangro, raggiungibile facilmente da lì grazie a uno dei percorsi naturalistici di quest'ultima, che arriva di fronte all'ingresso del cimitero.

BOLSENA WWII BRITISH COMMONWEALTH MEMORIAL / BOLSENA WAR CEMETERY. Cimitero militare inglese di Bolsena, provincia di Viterbo, Lazio, Italia. Il cimitero di guerra di Bolsena raccoglie 600 Caduti, inclusi 3 militari jugoslavi. Questa località fu scelta nel novembre 1944 ed accomuna Caduti delle aree di Orvieto, Bolsena e dell'isola d'Elba. Quasi un terzo sono sudafricani appartenenti alla VI Divisione Corazzata Sudafricana. Il cimitero sorge nell'area in cui era stato insediato il Quartier Generale avanzato del generale Harold Alexander dopo la Liberazione di Roma. Per indicazione degli Alleati nessuno dei cimiteri di guerra è volutamente un cimitero del campo di battaglia, ma ciascuno raggruppa le tombe dei caduti in zone più ampie, dopo che i combattimenti si erano allontanati. Cassino is a comune in the province of Frosinone, Italy, at the southern end of the region of Lazio, the last City of the Latin Valley. Cassino is located at the foot of Monte Cairo near the confluence of the Gari and Liri rivers. The city is best known as the site of the Abbey of Montecassino and the Battle of Monte Cassino during World War II, which resulted in huge Allied and German casualties as well as the near total destruction of the town itself. It is also home to the University of Cassino. Cassino has a population of 35,860 As of August 2015, making it the second largest town in the province.
Cassino's origins lie in the Volscan settlement of Casinum, sited atop the hill of Cassino near Monte Cairo, five kilometres to the north. Casinum passed under the control of the Samnites, but the Romans eventually gained control of Casinum, establishing a fortified colony there in 312 BC. During the Roman era the most venerated god was Apollo, whose temple rose up on Monte Cassino, where today stands the abbey. At least once during Punic Wars, Hannibal passed near Casinum. Casinum was also the site of a villa presumed to belong to Marcus Terentius Varro.
Cassino is located at the southern end of the region of Lazio and at the northern end of the historical region called Terra di Lavoro. The city centre is set in a valley at the foot of Monte Cassino and Monte Cairo. Cassino is distant 123 km (76 mi) from Rome, 101 km (63 mi) from Naples, 28 km (17 mi) from the coast (Gulf of Gaeta) and 24 km (15 mi) from the Parco nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise. The town is crossed by the rivers Gari and Rapido that join themselves in the area of the Varronian Thermal Baths; forward, in the frazione of Sant'Angelo in Theodice, the Gari joins the Liri, becoming Garigliano, the river that marks the border between the regions Lazio and Campania.

City of Baseball is a documentary that explores both the past and the present of the Italian baseball league. Through interviews with the league's former and current players, fans and historians, City of Baseball captures the story of how the allied invasion of Italy left behind the all-American pastime to a country which has embraced the sport with enthusiasm.
The production crew was given all-access to the 2002 team of Nettuno, a small resort town on the Tyrrhenian Coast, one hour south of Rome. Nettuno and Anzio were the towns that sustained the January 1944 allied landing, the precursor to the capture of Rome by the Allies the following May. A permanent American military cemetery was built in Nettuno following the liberation of Italy, and the tradition of baseball was handed down to locals who learned the sport from the occupying troops. Today, Nettuno is well-known as a summer destination for tourists, for its seafood, and for its fifty-year tradition of fielding Italy's most successful baseball teams.

The War Cemetery lies in the Commune of Rimini in the Province of Rimini, just west of the SS72 from Rimini to San Marino and six kilometres from Rimini.
Take the autostrada A14, Bologna-Ancona. Exit at San Marino, Rimini South. On leaving the motorway head towards San Marino and the cemetery is 4.5 kilometres down this road on the right hand side.
Within the cemetery is located the Rimini Cremation Memorial. This Memorial is one of three memorials erected in Italy to officers and men of the Indian Army who were cremated - the other two cremation memorials are in Forli Indian Army War Cemetery and in Sangro River War Cemetery.

In questo Cimitero riposano le spoglie di 4.402 soldati americani. Disposte in otto sezioni sono individualmente contrassegnate da croci latine per i caduti di religione cristiana e da stella di Davide per quelli di religione ebraica. Memoriale, su lastre di granito rosa di Baveno vi sono riportati 1.409 nomi di soldati dispersi in battaglia, e relativi gradi, unità di appartenenza e stato di origine dei dispersi. (Il Cimitero americano di Firenze è uno dei 14 luoghi in territorio d'oltre oceano prescelti per la sepoltura delle spoglie dei soldati americani). Soldati caduti e dispersi nel 1944-45 nord di Firenze, sulla Linea Gotica, in Appennino verso Bologna e Valle del Po, durante la campagna degli Alleati per la liberazione d' Italia. Sorge su un'area ceduta gratuitamente dal governo Italiano agli Stati Uniti d'America. Iniziato a costruire nel 1949, quando vi vengano seppellite le prime salme, viene completato nel 1959 e inaugurato nel 1961. Gli architetti McKim, Mead e Whiteb di New York incaricati della progettazione del Cimitero e del Memoriale , mentre gli architetti paesaggisti Clarke e Rapuano alla sistemazione delle aree verdi.
(DA ROMA ALLE ALPI E VITTORIA
Dopo la liberazione di Roma il 5 luglio 1944, la Quinta Armata Americana e l' Ottava Armata Britannica, appoggiata dalle Forze Aeree Alleate nel Mediterraneo (MAAF), si sono spinte verso nord verso la Linea Gotica, uno dei principali punti della difesa tedesca che traeva vantaggio dagli Appennini che separano l'Italia centrale dalla Valle del Po.
18 luglio 1944: il 361° Reggimento della 91^ Divisione Fanteria fu la prima unità a raggiungere il Fiume Arno.
19 luglio: le forze statunitensi, incluso il 442° Reggimento Combattente, occupano il porto di Livorno.
4 agosto: Firenze è occupata dagli Alleati.
25 agosto: l'Ottava Armata attacca il versante orientale della Linea Gotica. Subito dopo la Quinta Armata attacca il versante occidentale.
Metà ottobre: l'avanzata verso nord si ferma a sud di Bologna. Carenza di personale e rifornimenti, oltre alle cattive condizioni atmosferiche contribuiscono alla sosta.
9 aprile 1945: bombardieri medi e pesanti della MAAF hanno abbattuto le difese tedesche che difendevano Bologna quando l'Ottava Armata ha preso l'offensiva. La Quinta Armata si unirà all'azione il 14 aprile.
17 aprile: la 10^ Divisione da Montagna buca le difese tedesche a sud di Bologna, aprendo la strada per l'avanzata.
21 aprile: Bologna cade nelle mani della Quinta Armata.
25 aprile: la 10^ Divisione da Montagna si avvicina a Verona.
27 aprile: la 92^ Divisione Fanteria entra a Genova. Da qui, le unità statunitensi avanzano verso nord-ovest per unirsi alle forze di resistenza francesi.
2 maggio: resa di tutte le forze tedesche in Italia.
La lunga e sanguinosa campagna degli Alleati ha liberato l'Italia e ha contribuito al successo di campagne altrove in Europa.
