If you love nature, critters, and water, then this place has it all. But it's easy to miss the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve if you don't know what you're looking for. Bolsa Chica reserve includes over 1,200 acres of undeveloped wetlands, lowlands, and lower mesa operated by the California Department of Fish and Game, and is hidden along the east side of Pacific Coast Highway in the city of Huntington Beach from Warner Avenue to Seapoint Avenue.
Bolsa Chica is one of the last remaining wetlands in southern California, within the past 100 years the area has been used as a hunting ground, for gun emplacements by the United States military, and as an extensive oil production field. For several thousand years prior to those times, Native Americans inhabited the wetlands and surrounding bluffs.
Although there are still active oil wells on the wetlands today, the area has become the home to a large and diverse collection of flora and fauna, as well as a haven for an abundance of costal wildlife and is open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset. Best of all--it's free.

CRC Helps Local Plants Thrive at the Bolsa Chica Wetlands in Huntington Beach
CRC partnered with the Bolsa Chica Conservancy to remove Stinkwort, an invasive and non-native plant species, from the Bolsa Chica Wetlands in Huntington Beach. Removing the invasive plant species helps keep them from establishing roots and flourishing, and maintains the delicate balance of the Bolsa ecosystem.
Stinkwort has a light, fluffy seed that is easily released upon touch or from a breeze. It also has a distinct smell and bitter taste that deters wildlife from feeding on it. The plant spreads rapidly and takes up space normally inhabited by native plants, which reduces the amount of plant life available for native animal species to eat. A dozen CRC volunteers, along with 20 Conservancy volunteers from California State University, Long Beach, worked to remove over 250 plants from the location in under three hours.

Exploring Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve
Went on a random hike to explore the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve (wetlands area of Bolsa Chica State Beach) to see what all the hype is about. I brought a few beers with me, and yes, I packed out the cans. I also got a face time call while I was shooting this from my good friend Crumby, who moved to Hawaii when we where kids. Overall its a pretty cool place and defiantly on the mellow side for hiking. Noticed there is a lot of people into bird watching at this place. Thanks for watching.
