A place of exceptional beauty has been created around the fascinating remains of a settlement buried by the eruption of Mount Tarawera. Today at the Buried Village an award winning Museum houses many precious objects dug from the ruins, guides in period costume escort groups though the excavated sites and the walk to the base of one of NZ's most stunning waterfalls should not be missed. Delicious food including Devonshire teas are served in the Café and distinctive gifts are available in Smith's Store. The Buried Village is located fifteen minutes from Rotorua on one of the districts most scenic drives.

Buried Village Rotorua
The Buried Village with its award-winning museum, recreated pioneer cottage, Maori whare and excavated sites is a must-see for anyone visiting Rotorua. The scenic nature trails, including a walk to a stunning waterfall, and the café onsite are attractions in their own right.
The excavated village offers a first hand insight into the chaos and mayhem that transpired on the night Mount Tarawera erupted. It is an authentic appreciation of the people of Te Wairoa, both Maori and European, on how they lived... and died.
On June 10 1886, spewing rock, ash and mud killed more than 150 people, engulfed several settlements and destroyed the marble-like terraces at Lake Rotomahana, which were internationally regarded as the eighth wonder of the world.

The Eruption of Tarawera (2000) Part 1
In June 1886 Mt Tarawera spectacularly erupted, and this documentary tells the story of the people who were caught in the catastrophic events. Around 120 people lost their lives, and the internationally famous Pink and White Terraces were destroyed. The documentary features an animated re-creation of the eruption, archival images, interviews with descendants of those involved, and readings from written eyewitness accounts. The author of the book Tarawera, Ron Keam, is also interviewed.
