Off-road Trails: Fish Creek, Sandstone Canyon in Anza Borrego - So California in a Subaru Outback
Off-roading in my 2011 Subaru Outback with some friends in an Acura MDX and another Subaru Outback in Anza Borrego in Southern California (East of San Diego).
Pretty easy off-roading with beautiful sites. Only need AWD if you go through deep sand.
Used a GoPro Hero5 on a Karma Grip for the video.

Free Camping at Ocotillo Wells SVRA & Clark Dry Lake (Borrego Springs) (202)
Ocotillo Wells SVRA:
You can camp here for 30 days within any calendar year. It can be noisy at night due to loud music and dirt bikes. On two of our three stays here, the nights were peaceful and the stars were brilliant. The other time, we were woken up by dirt bikes and loud music. We take the chance because the setting is so beautiful, there are flush toilets, and coin op showers. For a more peaceful location, check out Hawk Canyon in Anza Borrego State Park or Clark Dry Lake which is just outside of Borrego Springs.
_______________________________________________
Clark Dry Lake:
This is a great BLM free camping spot where tons of snowbirds park in the winter time. It is a large area so you don't feel too closed in, and it is close to Borrego Springs. The public library has fast, and free wifi and the new building is beautiful. There are also two grocery stores in town and gas stations. We will definitely be back since it is such a peaceful and convenient spot.

Top 5 Intermediate Off-Road Trails in Southern California Day Trips with Camping 2019 4k UHD
Top 5 Intermediate Offroad trails in Southern California that are good day trips and have camping.
These great SoCal 4x4 trails are great for someone looking to get out for the day or weekend. With a lot of adventure and some unique places to camp, there is no doubt why many people love these trails for both overlanding and 4wheeling.
Below are Joshua Noesser's Top 5 favorite off-road trails in Southern California
5.) Rattlesnake Canyon RC3331 - Johnson Valley
4.) Red Cloud Mine - Blyth
3.) Miller Jeep Trail - San Pedro
2.) The Squeeze 3n07A - Big Bear
1.) Afton Canyon - Barstow in Mojave Desert
All these trails are near Los Angeles aka LA, Orange County, Riverside, San Bernardino, Inland Empire, and San Diego. All these trails are perfect for a day trip or a weekend with camping.
The trails are also best for beginners and 1st time offroaders with little to no experience. This is because these intermediate trails are fine for stock 4x4's as long as they have high ground clearance. But with that said, new drivers are not the only people for these trails, these are also great trails for experienced drivers and people looking for something new or different in SoCal.
Along the route and jeep trails you will find a lot of unique things such as mines, borax camps, old stone buildings, graves, water crossings, old cabins, abandoned buildings, live stock, cows, snakes, birds and a good place for bird watching, natural springs, amazing views that last forever, dense forest, epic memories, and truly some of the best trails you can find in California.
So sit back in your chair or on your couch, join the guys from JeepAdventures and TrailsOffroad as we explore Josh's favorite 5 trials in Southern California in 4k UHD

Along Highway S2 in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Borrego Springs, California
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is a spawling state park, the largest in California at almost 1000 square miles, and the second largest in the United States. It surrounds the small desert community of Borrego Springs.
The park features about 500 miles of dirt roads and more than 100 miles of hiking trails, several wilderness areas, fossil beds and pre-Columbian Native American archaeological sites.
A day visit - let alone eight photos - can't do justice to this desert park. But you can get a nice introduction to the park and some of its features along Highway S2.
Bring plenty of food and water. Outside of Borrego Springs, you're pretty much on your own.
The Photos (in order)
S11A0729 - Blair Valley is towards the north end of Highway S2 south of Highway 78; short hikes here lead to some archeological sites
S11A0702 - A large boulder covered with Kumeyaay pictographs is a highlight of the Pictograph Trail
S11A0718 - The Pictograph Trail terminates at the top of a drop-off that features this view of the Smuggler Canyon/Bisnaga Alta Wash area
S11A0752 - The short Morteros Trail leads to an area that features rocks with several depressions in them, created where the prehistoric Kumeyaay ground seeds and nuts into meal more than 2,000 years ago
S11A0763 - Park scenery along Highway S2
S11A0775 - Further south along Highway S2 is Box Canyon, a hiking destination
S11A0782 - Desert scenery at Agua Caliente, along Highway S2
S11A0789 - Stop for the views at Carrizo Badlands Overlook, a few miles before Highway S2 exits the park
Off-Road Trail Review - Calcite Mine in Anza Borrego California in 4K UHD
For the full trail guide please visit:
The Calcite Mine is a historic landmark in the Truckhaven Hills in the Anza Borrego State Park. Because of the uniqueness of the mine, many people stop here when doing an overland trip through the deserts of Southern California. Getting to the mine is a moderate 4x4 trail with several obstacles that require a person to pick the right line. Recently someone went through the trail trying to make it easier but left a few off camber areas with some small ledges. This is a very short off-road run, perfect for a night run or a quick day trip if in the area. There are also several slot canyons in the area that make for a great hike.

Sandstone Canyon Offroad Trail - Anza Borrego California in 4K UHD
For the full trail guide please visit:
Sandstone Canyon off-road trail is a fun route for all levels of experience off-roader. This overland trail offers some difficult four-wheeling along with some of the most breathtaking views. But don't let your experience level stop you from trying this trail. Even though there are several rock slides, the first couple rock slides can be easily traversed in most capable 4x4 vehicles. Once in the canyon, you will be struck with awe-inspiring views of 300+ foot plus sandstone walls towering over just a few feet wide trail. Whether you are a Jeep person, Toyota lover, rock crawling junky, die-hard overlander, or just looking for the most epic camping spot, Sandstone Canyon should be your next stop when traveling near Palm Springs in the low desert of Anza Borrego in Southern California.
The video is a complete overview of the trail from start to end and is mostly recorded in 4K UHD. The video was recorded in November 2017 after the massive flash flood that changed the trail.

Wind Caves Hike in Anza-Borrego
Near Split Mountain, there are some formations that have a sinister look to them. This is known as the Wind Caves and can be visited with a loop-trail hike. See our on-line travel guide on Anza-Borrego in California at
Upper Coyote Canyon Trail - Anza Borrego Desert
The Upper Coyote Canyon trail is located in Anza, California in the Anza Borrego desert national forest. This trail is an out and back trail, there is no passage through the mountains to the South Coyote Canyon Trail. We really enjoyed the day out there and we only ran into 2 other off-roaders the whole trip. Baily’s Cabin is a free pack-in & pack-out camp site that is worth checking out and if you time it just right, like we did, following a rain, you will see many cactus in bloom.
Coyote Canyon runs from Anza to Borrego Springs and offers two separate vehicle trails, one from the north and one from the south. Of the two, the southern approach is more popular with hikers and four-wheelers. It is also slightly easier, although a rough half-mile section will test any vehicle. For eight months of the year, hikers, horses, and mountain bikers can connect the two trails via a 3 mile section of the canyon between Middle and Upper Willows. Between June 1 and September 30 each year, Coyote Canyon is closed to all users to protect water sources for the rare peninsular bighorn sheep. A seasonal closure gate after Second Crossing restricts users during this time.
The trail is best suited for small and midsize SUV because of a couple spots where there is tight clearance between large boulders. Good clearance and tires, and an absence of side steps and low-hanging brush bars, are a definite advantage.
Juan Bautista de Anza first passed through the Borrego Valley in March 1774, on his first route-finding mission to the new Spanish settlements in California. Santa Catarina Springs was their campsite on March 14, 1774.

Summer is fast approaching us. What better way to spend it then on some trails in California?
We already gave you our Top 5 trails in the Southeast, but now it's time to sound off on the Top 5 trails in the Golden State.
At number 5 on our list is Mendocino National Forest in Northwestern California.
Going on a trail in Mendocino is a completely serene nature experience. OHV Trails include the Grindstone Ranger District and Upper Lake Ranger District Trails. The absence of paved roads or highways crossing the forest makes Mendocino the perfect place if you’re looking for tranquility and solitude.
Next on our list is California’s Imperial Sand Dunes Recreational Areas in the Southeast!
These are the largest sand dunes open to OHVs in the United States. They sprawl from Southeastern California all the way into Mexico. Going on the 1,000 square miles of the Algodones Sand Dune system should definitely get your rig ready for Baja!
After you do that check out the Mojave National Preserve which is nestled between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
Mojave is the third largest national park in the country clocking in at a massive 16 million acres. Be sure to put the Afton Canyon, Cedar Canyon, Fort Piute, Aiken Mines and Lava Tube on your wish list when planning out your trails.
Not too far from Mojave is our number 2 pick Johnson Valley.
This is home to one of the most grueling and legendary off-road competitions in the world: the King of the Hammers. The so called “hammers” are a large mass of hills that best even the most experienced off-roaders.
Extreme rock crawling isn’t all it has to offer though. You can also get your fill of open deserts, dry lake beds and sand dunes.
The trail at the top of our list needs no introduction for off-roaders; it’s the legendary Rubicon Trail. While it is only 22 miles long, Rubicon has gained a reputation for being the premiere testing ground for 4x4 enthusiasts. It is home to the Jeep Jamboree and of course gives its namesake to Rubicon variants of the Jeep Wrangler.
Famous obstacles like Post Pile, Walker Hill, Spider Lake, Chappie Rock, Buck Island Dam, Big Sluice and more are sure to give you a challenge.
Wherever you take your 4x4 this summer, be sure to post videos of your adventures to our facebook page here.
Until next time, I’m Ken with 4WheelOnline!
Off-Road in the Badlands of Anza-Borrego
After spending a few months planning our great adventure for a weekend holiday, we end up having to scrap all of that and take a trip out to the desert due to some bad weather.
Additionally, Southern California was a bit cooler than it normally is in early summer, so we decided to take the opportunity to explore more of Anza-Borrego, a place we all like quite a bit. We ended up finding some good trails, got the chance to try out some new gear on our trucks, and just generally enjoyed being in the outdoors (as always).
Thanks for watching!
