Sense of Place Episode 9 - Guardea - Labor of Love
Episode 9 of A Sense of Place, which follows VRMB's Matt Landau as he travels around the world to vacation rental destinations and introduces us to their incredible hosts.
This episode takes us to Guardea, Italy to meet Debra and her boyfriend Ruggero, hosts of Casale Prato delle Coccinelle, a spectacular home in the Italian countryside. In this episode, we explore challenges that arise from the ease of entry offered by the vacation rental industry, and find out how passion and a love for the process can be used to meet those challenges.

Catherine Karnow Photo Workshop — Umbria 2012
This video features a compilation of photographs taken by participants in a unique photo workshop in Umbria, Italy in May 2012, led by internationally renowned National Geographic photographer Catherine Karnow.
The 10-day intensive photo workshop, which welcomed all levels of photographers, focused on the people, culture, and food of Umbria. Every day was a different adventure. A highly experienced travel photojournalist, Catherine Karnow organizes workshops packed with fun experiences, specifically designed so that participants spend real time with locals. There are many photo workshops out there but this one is unique.
This workshop will be what it is like to be me, Catherine Karnow, on assignment for my favourite travel magazines clients, such as National Geographic Traveler. In my career I have been lucky to meet all sorts of fascinating people and have all kinds of extraordinary experiences. I want you to know what that is like. I have handpicked the most fun parts and people for you to meet and photograph. We will also learn from local experts about the culture, history, art, and food of Umbria.
Excursions included photographing the local Fiat Cinquecento club: the owners and their tiny cars in the town of Viterbo; going out at dawn with fishermen to photograph their ancient way of net fishing on Lake Bolsena; documenting the most prestigious ceramics workshop in the historic town of Deruta; joining in a colorful festival of ancient rituals in the lakeside town of Marta; dining with an aristocratic couple in their elegant palazzo; and much more!
Participants stayed at La Locanda della Quercia Calante, a beautifully restored farmhouse and cottages twenty minutes from Orvieto. The food at La Locanda is delicious and healthy, much of it from their own organic farm. There were also meals in local restaurants. Yoga was also offered as well as on-site spa services.
Catherine Karnow has been teaching photography since 1995; and has taught at Maine Photo Workshops, Santa Fe Photo Workshops, and many others. For National Geographic, she currently teaches Weekend Workshops in San Francisco, at Miraval in Tucson; and the National Geographic Traveler Seminar in cities all over the US. She also gives private workshops and teaching seminars all over the world, for a myriad of private, corporate and editorial clients.
