Cape Flyer over Cape Cod Canal (Buzzards Bay)
This morning I arrived at Buzzards Bay, and waited about thirty minutes for the Cape Flyer to arrive. After stopping at the Buzzards Bay Station, the flyer proceeded to Hyannis, but first crossing the Cape Cod Canal. This Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge is the second longest vertical lift railroad bridge in the United States to date. And it is currently the only vertical lift bridge to be left up in the U.S today, for a majority of sea traffic rather than land.

The Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge (also known as the Buzzards Bay Railroad Bridge), a vertical lift bridge in Bourne, Massachusetts near Buzzards Bay, carries railroad traffic across the Cape Cod Canal, connecting Cape Cod with the mainland.
The bridge was constructed beginning in 1933 by the Public Works Administration from a design by firms Parsons, Klapp, Brinckerhoff, and Douglas as well as Mead and White (both of New York), for the United States Army Corps of Engineers, which operates both the bridge and the canal. The bridge has a 544-foot (166 m) main span, with a 135-foot (41 m) clearance when raised, uses 1,100-short-ton (1,000 t) counterweights on each end, and opened on December 29, 1935. The bridge replaced a bascule bridge that had been built in 1910. At the time of its completion, it was the longest vertical lift span in the world. The Bay Colony rail line on the Cape is used for a seasonal tourist train, the Cape Cod Central Railroad, and to haul trash to a waste-to-energy plant in Rochester, Massachusetts. [1]

The Cape Cod Canal is an artificial waterway in the state of Massachusetts connecting Cape Cod Bay in the north to Buzzards Bay in the south.
Part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, the approximately 7 mile (11.3 km) long canal traverses the narrow neck of land joining Cape Cod to the state's mainland. Most of its length follows tidal rivers widened to 480 feet (150 m) and deepened to 32 feet (9.8 m) at mean low water, shaving 135 miles (217 km)s off the journey around the Cape for its approximately 20,000 annual users.
The waterway is maintained by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and has no toll fees.[2] It is spanned by the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge and two highway bridges—the Bourne and the Sagamore. Traffic lights at either end govern the approach of vessels over 65 feet (19.8 m).

Cape Cod is a cape jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean in the easternmost portion of the state of Massachusetts, in the Northeastern United States. Its historic, maritime character and ample beaches attract heavy tourism during the summer months.
Cape Cod stretches from Provincetown in the northeast to Woods Hole in the southwest. Cape Cod encompasses Barnstable County, and is in full jurisdiction of the Cape Cod Commission, which includes a small part of that area that is on the mainland side of the Cape Cod Canal (which includes Buzzards Bay, Bournedale and Sagamore Beach.[2] Most, however, incorrectly see the canal as Cape Cod's western boundary. Historically, the entire Town of Bourne (which was a part of Sandwich until 1884) was considered Cape Cod hundreds of years before the canal was built. The Town of Sandwich also extends over the Cape Cod Canal onto the mainland side of Cape Cod.
Two road bridges cross the Cape Cod Canal: the Sagamore Bridge and the Bourne Bridge. In addition, the Cape Cod Canal Railroad Bridge carries railway freight and limited passenger services onto the Cape. Cape territory is divided into fifteen towns with many villages.

In My Footsteps: Cape Cod - Bourne Recreation Area
The 4th video presented by In My Footsteps features another hidden gem. Although hundreds of thousands pass over the Bourne Recreation Area each year on the Bourne Bridge few know about it or stop there. Located under the bridge on Sandwich Road it is a unique mix of humming highway traffic with boats and birds. There are picnic tables to relax and the Canal Bike Path passes right along.

Should Cape Cod's Bridges Be Replaced?
The Army Corps of Engineers is calling for a complete replacement of the two bridges that span the Cape Cod Canal. Locals are supportive, hopeful it will help relieve the traffic that often backs up on the existing bridges in Sagamore and Bourne.

A NEW BRIDGE WAS BOURNE - in 1935
A young couple from Minnesota decided to visit Southeastern MA for their honeymoon. The trip included visits to Plymouth Rock, New Bedford and the Cape Cod Canal.
The newlyweds, loved it so much, that they moved here and spent the rest of their lives in Mattapoisett. Mr Furnans loved filming and photography and always brought his cameras along.
