Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea has a great collection of coastal redwoods, one of the best that you can see in Southern California. Amie and I set out on the 2 mile hike to explore the redwood grove and figured that we would share it so that you could explore this park as well. CA-142 North - Carbon Canyon Road - Brea to Chino Hills

This is a relatively short route, with a matching short video! Making the only direct connection from San Bernardino County to Orange County, California State Route 142 traverses Carbon Canyon Road from Brea through the Chino Hills to the namesake of the hilly range.
SR 142 incorporates parts of two other roads besides Carbon Canyon: one at it's southern end running from Imperial Hwy (CA-90) north along Valencia Ave to Lambert Rd/Carbon Canyon Rd, in Brea, and another along Chino Hills Pkwy from Carbon Canyon Rd to CA-71, located within Chino Hills. Overall, this road is only 11 miles and length, and due to lost footage, I was not able to showcase the section along Valencia which accounts for less then one mile of the entire route and is a primarily busy suburban avenue.

Brea Redwoods - Carbon Canyon Hike
Carbon Canyon Regional Park has this awesome little grove of Redwood trees. It's the largest grove in Southern California. Still nothing compared to what is up in Northern California but a cool local hike. It's about a mile round trip. Pretty easy for kids to take. Costs a few bucks to park in the Regional Park.

Orange Country Redwood Grove Hike at Carbon Canyon Regional Park - Yorba Linda
Carbon Canyon Regional Park has a ten-acre grove of Coastal Redwood trees. This grove of redwoods trees were planted back in 1975 with many of the trees standing over 100 feet tall during the last fire half of the forest burn down, Carbon Canyon Regional Park

Mysterious Marker Reveals History in Brea Canyon
Driving through Brea Canyon, I noticed a cryptic concrete white obelisk off the side of the road. Pulling off onto a sandy shoulder, I stepped out of my car to get a closer look. A small brown plaque on the obelisk read, “Don Gaspar de Portola with 60 men camped here July 31, 1769 on the first exploring march from San Diego to Monterey.” I’ve driven down Brea Canyon Road a couple of times over the past couple of years, especially when I was learning to drive with my grandpa, but I never noticed this historical marker until now.
Back in fourth grade at Golden Hill Elementary, I remember learning that Portola was an explorer who led an expedition of Alta California as part of Spanish efforts to establish missions in the pre-Golden State. However, after seeing the historical marker in Brea Canyon, I was inspired to do more research into California history.
