Interfaith Candle Light Vigil at Brea, CA for the Victims of Oak Creek Sikh Temple Shootings
Candlelight Vigil Draws Hundreds in Support of Sikh Community
They sang; they waved American flags; they prayed for unity beneath an indigo sky.
Hundreds, including city leaders, members of the Sikh-American community, the interfaith community and the North Orange County community at large, stood shoulder-to-shoulder on the steps of the Brea Civic Center Tuesday at a candlelight vigil commemorating the victims of the Aug. 5 shooting at a Sikh Temple in suburban Milwaukee.
The vigil—the fifthin Orange County since the shooting—was organized by members of the local Sikh-American community, who said they hoped not only to bring a message of peace, but to stand united as Americans and pray an event like this never happens again.
Six people died in the massacre and three others were seriously injured, including Oak Creek, Wisc., police Lt Brian Murphy, who was shot multiple times while trying to stop the gunman.
This is not a Sikh-American tragedy, co-organizer Jasinder Singh told a hushed crowd before a moment of silence was observed. This is a national tragedy, and the grief has been shared by everyone.
Several city leaders from Fullerton attended the vigil, including Mayor Sharon Quirk-Silva, Council member Greg Sebourn and Acting Chief of Police Dan Hughes.
Quirk-Silva joined the mayors of Brea, Placentia and Yorba Linda in offering sympathy to the victims of the Wisconsin shooting. She invited participants to turn and introduce themselves to the person next to them.
If we keep this activity in mind when we hear those comments that are polarizing...we can stand up and introduce ourselves so that those who want to spread hatred will have a face they can recognize, Quirk-Silva said, adding it was one small step to help prevent the violence and polarizing language pervasive in today's society.
U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-Fullerton) also spoke, telling the crowd he plans to co-sponsor a Congressional resolution expressing compassion for the families of the victims and condemning the shooter.
Royce said he learned about the Wisconsin attack while on his way to a temple in Walnut to meet with Sikh leaders. What struck me is the irony that someone filled with hate would attack a temple filled with people dedicated to peace, and attack them during their religious service.
Afterward, Hughes said it was heartwarming to see the outpouring of support the Sikh community has received. It's touched so many people's hearts.
Organizers of Tuesday's vigil said one objective was to educate the community about Sikhism, the world's fifth largest religion with 25 million followers worldwide.
We're no different (than anyone else), Placentia resident Arinder Chadha explained before the vigil. We look different because of our religion and culture. But from our roots, we all share the same common principles of spiritualty.
Flyers distributed by organizers outlined some facts about Sikhism, including:
•Sikhism is approximately 500 years old.
•Sikhism is a distinct religion, separate from Hinduism and Islam.
•Sikhs believe in one God, equality, freedom of religion and community service.
•Sikhs cover their uncut hair with a turban—the turban represents a Sikh's commitment to their faith, equality and justice.
•99 percent of people wearing turbans in the U.S. are Sikhs
•Sikhs trace the origin of their religion to Punjab, located in present-day Pakistan and northern India.
•An estimated 50,000 Sikhs reside in Southern California
Chadha said Sikhs are often mistaken for Arabs because they wear turbans. But we are from India and the turban is more of a mandate than an option, he said, People don't understand that and think it's a cap and we can take it off.
He said people are often apprehensive to ask Sikhs about their customs and beliefs, so the vigil was a way to give people a chance to connect with and talk to Sikhs.
Ann Nguyen, board member of the Interfaith Council of Garden Grove, Stanton and Westminster, said what impressed her about the Sikhs was hearing one of their leaders pray for the shooter during a vigil in Santa Ana last week. It was so moving. That's what I know about the Sikh community—loving, loving, loving.
Co-organizer Shivinder Singh explained Sikhs live a code of honor and service to humanity. There are three words for this: kirat karo, naam jappo, and wand ke chhako. (They mean) work hard and honestly, remember God throughout the day, share what we have with the needy and give back to the community.
Singh noted Tuesday's vigil was one way to give back to the community.

USC Pacific Asia Museum is an Asian art museum located at 46 N. Los Robles Avenue, Pasadena, California, United States.
The museum was founded in 1971 by the Pacificulture Foundation, which purchased “The Grace Nicholson Treasure House of Oriental Art” from the City of Pasadena. Grace Nicholson donated the structure to the city for art and cultural purposes in 1943 and was a dealer in Native American and, later, Asian art and antiques. Here is the final elevator I'm posting from here. There is one more elevator but it's not even finished being built yet. This is one of the original elevators on campus. This was a US elevator but it looks like something much older than that. I can't find any signs of the original brand. Maybe this was always a US. Who knows. The curved door frames are what's stumping me. This mod is wack. It's a mix of Innovation, ERM, and OTIS. Also, look at that weird cover where the original indicator was. It looks stupid lol. The motor is nice and sounds very similar to the Briggs Hall elevators at UCD. This thing sounds wonderful and makes all kinds of noise. For being in a library, this elevator sure ain't quiet!

???? Drive America's Highways for 10 miles south along the Arroyo Seco Parkway (California Highway 110) from Pasadena to Los Angeles in California ????️
The Arroyo Seco Parkway, also known as the Pasadena Freeway, is the first freeway in the Western United States. Originally part of Route 66, the route is now known as California Highway 110 and presently exists only from Pasadena to Los Angeles, with the highway being Interstate 110 south of Interstate 10.
This video starts at the north end of the parkway at the interchange with Orange Grove Ave, the first full interchange on the parkway. Heading south, we parallel (and sometimes dip into) Hermon Park (Arroyo Seco Park) as we enter the City of Los Angeles.
Leaving the park, we soon reach the interchange with Interstate 5 and Elysian Park, where, if you were traveling northbound you would drive through some really neat tunnels, but we don't have that video (Help us get this video with a purchase from our Trading Post or Sponsorship with our Adopt a Route program.)
Around this time, you get the first good look at downtown LA (see the cover photo) as we cross the interchange with the 101 Freeway (US-101) north of downtown. We make our way along the western edge of downtown before ending the video on the westbound ramp to Interstate 10, just southwest of downtown LA.

Los Angeles is the second-largest city in the United States after New York City, the most populous city in the U.S. state of California. Situated in Southern California, Los Angeles is known for its mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, sprawling metropolis, and as a major center of the American entertainment industry. Los Angeles lies in a large coastal basin surrounded on three sides by mountains reaching up to and over 10,000 feet (3,000 m).
Historically home to the Chumash and Tongva, Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would become Alta California. The city was officially founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. The city experienced rapid growth with the discovery of oil.

Nicknamed the City of Angels, Los Angeles is a global city with a diverse economy in entertainment, culture, media, fashion, science, sports, technology, education, medicine and research.
