SAN DIEGO CA / JAPANESE & BOTANICAL GARDENS / ARTIST CENTER / BALBOA PARK-EP49
Tour the Japanese Friendship Garden, Rose & Cactus Garden, Artist Village and Botanical Garden with Sue on her days exploring Balboa Park in San Diego, Ca.
This was a Sue & Mark Ying and Yang” day of exploring! In the previous episode, I concentrated on the Air & Space, Fleet Science, Automotive and Railroad Museums. This is her turn to show you the park through her eyes.
Balboa Park, is a 1,200-acre park in San Diego, California. It is comprised of many gardens, walking paths, 17 museums, two theaters, the world-famous San Diego Zoo and the largest outside organ amphitheater in the world. Sue and I spent (3) 6 hour days exploring things here, many times splitting up, trying to take in all this place had to offer.
Balboa Park is run and maintained by the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department. We purchased one week passes that allowed museum entry to all of the free AND paid attractions. The senior discounted rate was $59/person. It is virtually impossible to see everything that this park has to offer in less than 5 or six days. All the things to do and see are close enough to each other so you can walk once your car is parked. Prepare to walk 10,000 steps a day.
Balboa Park's rise in prominence was secured when it hosted the 1915–16 Panama–California Exposition. This was soon followed by the 1935–36 California Pacific International Exposition. This park still has the special look and feel from that grand era when cities built exposition facilities to set themselves apart from other cities. You will love visiting this gem.

Rembrandt in Southern California
In a collaborative effort between The Paul J. Getty Museum, Norton Simon Museum, The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Huntington, and The San Diego Museum of Art, Southern California brings together the third largest assemblance of Rembrandt paintings in the United States.
Through March 7, 2010, The San Diego Museum of Art's From Rembrandt's Studio: The Prints of Ferdinand Bol focuses on printmaking in Rembrandt's Holland and documents the efforts of the Dutch painter and printmaker Ferdinand Bol to arrive at his own style while working with Rembrandt, the greatest artist of his time.
The San Diego Museum of Art's exhibition is timed to coincide with Drawings by Rembrandt and His Pupils: Telling the Difference, a major exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles December 8, 2009 through February 28, 2010. The exhibition, focusing on the artistic relationships between Rembrandt and his followers, will also provide the opportunity to study drawings by Rembrandt and Bol side-by-side.
Within San Diego, The San Diego Museum of Art joins forces with the Timken Museum of Art to present a strong combined showing of Rembrandt and Bol in Balboa Park.
Other related exhibitions on Rembrandt and his circle will be held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena.
