The Centre Pompidou-Metz is a museum of modern and contemporary arts located in Metz, capital of Lorraine, France. It is a branch of Pompidou arts centre of Paris, and features semi-permanent and temporary exhibitions from the large collection of the French National Museum of Modern Art, the largest European collection of 20th and 21st century arts. The museum is the largest temporary exhibition space outside Paris in France with 5,000 m2 (54,000 sq ft) divided between 3 galleries, a theatre, and an auditorium.
The first piece of the monument designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban was laid on November 7, 2006, and the building was inaugurated by French President Nicolas Sarkozy on May 12, 2010. The building is remarkable for its roof structure, one of the largest and most complex built to date, which was inspired by a Chinese hat found in Paris by Shigeru Ban. Since its inauguration, the institution has become one of the most visited cultural venues in France outside Paris.
The Centre Pompidou-Metz is a large hexagon structured round a central spire reaching 77 m (253 ft), alluding to the 1977 opening date of the original Centre Pompidou of Paris. It possesses three rectangular galleries (Gallery 1, 2, and 3) weaving through the building at different levels, jutting out through the roof with huge picture windows angled towards landmarks such as the Saint-Stephen Gothic cathedral, the Imperial railway station, the Arsenal Concert Hall built by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill, the Arènes indoor sport arena built by French architect Paul Chemetov, and the Seille park. The great nave covers 1,200 m2 (13,000 sq ft) and provides flexibility for the exhibition of large artworks, with the ceiling rising progressively from a height of 5.7 m (19 ft) to 18 m (59 ft).
The Centre Pompidou-Metz also displays around 3 to 4 unique temporary exhibitions per year, which are not presented elsewhere. Most of the artworks exhibited are from the large collection of the National Museum of Modern Art, which encompasses the largest European collection of modern and contemporary arts and the second in the world. The museum works in close collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Luxembourgian Museum of Modern Art, or the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe in joint initiatives.
The Centre Pompidou-Metz promotes the local art scene in collaborating with the Regional Contemporary Art Fund of Lorraine. In addition to the temporary exhibitions, the Centre Pompidou-Metz museum features seasonal programming with contemporary live shows in its theater and organizes meetings and conferences in its auditorium with worldly recognized, as well as, local artists.
The Centre Pompidou-Metz edifice and surrounding Metz are sometimes used as support for the artistic production displayed during the temporary exhibitions. For example, the architectural structure of the Centre Pompidou-Metz was used as support for a visual art project by French visual artists Simon Geilfus, Yannick Jacquet, and Thomas Vaquié. Also, French aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand captured Metz from high up, giving a privileged views of the museum and the city for the exhibition Views from above

The architecture of the Centre Pompidou-Metz has unusual characteristics: the remarkable size of its main nave and the variety of its exhibition areas, with large open spaces and more intimate places that encourage inventiveness and continually surprise the visitor. Never fixed permanently, the exhibition areas can be modulated to allow original interpretations of modern and contemporary art. The Centre Pompidou-Metz is a large hexagonal structure covering a collection of interior spaces. It is structured round a central spire reaching a height of 77 m. The building is a two-curve superstructure with an assembly of wooden beams forming hexagonal modules and supported by a central metal tower and four conical pillars. With a surface area of 8,000 m2, constructed fully in wood, the roofing is made up of hexagonal units resembling the cane-work pattern of a Chinese hat. This structure is covered with a waterproof membrane made from fibre glass and teflon (PTFE).
Inside the building, the general atmosphere is light with a pale wood roof, white-painted walls and floors in pearl-grey polished concrete. The roof, the relation between the interior and exterior and the four exhibition galleries make up highly innovative architectural choices. Three galleries in the shape of rectangular (parallelepipedic) tubes weave through the building at different levels, jutting out through the roof with huge picture windows angled towards landmarks such as the cathedral, the station and Seille Park, showing visitors genuine “postcard” images of the city of Metz. Viewed as a whole, the Centre Pompidou-Metz evokes a huge marquee surrounded by a front square and two gardens. Total surface area is 10,700 m2. The exhibition areas take up 5,020 m2, plus other spaces where works can also be exhibited such as the gardens, forum and the gallery terraces.

Le centre Pompidou-Metz est un établissement public de coopération culturelle d’art situé à Metz, entre le parc de la Seille et la gare. Sa construction est réalisée dans le cadre de l’opération d’aménagement du quartier de l’Amphithéâtre.
Créé en 2010, le centre Pompidou-Metz est l'un des musées français les plus visités hors de Paris, du fait notamment de sa proximité avec l'Allemagne, le Luxembourg et la Belgique .
Sa création est la première expérience de décentralisation d’un établissement public culturel, en l’occurrence le centre national d'art et de culture Georges-Pompidou de Paris. Perçu comme élément fondateur du nouveau quartier de l’Amphithéâtre, il a ouvert ses portes le 12 mai 2010. Les architectes associés sont: Shigeru Ban, Jean de Gastines, et Philip Gumuchdjian. Le maître d’ouvrage est la communauté d’agglomération de Metz Métropole en partenariat avec le centre Pompidou. La ville de Metz est mandataire du maître d’ouvrage. Le projet est également financé par la ville de Metz, le conseil général de la Moselle, le conseil régional de Lorraine, l’État et la Communauté européenne. L’édifice est réalisé par l’entreprise de construction Demathieu & Bard.

Metz (prononcer [mɛs] Prononciation du titre dans sa version originale Écouter) est une commune française située dans le département de la Moselle. Préfecture de département, elle fait partie, depuis le 1er janvier 2016, de la région administrative Grand Est. Metz se trouve dans la région historique de Lorraine.
Ville bi-millénaire, l'oppidum celte des Médiomatriques, connu sous le nom latin de Divodurum Mediomatricorum, puis comme Mettis, devient la capitale du royaume franc d’Austrasie. Ville commerçante de l'Empire carolingien, Metz est le siège d'un puissant évêché, et une cité commerçante et bancaire d’importance du Saint-Empire romain germanique. Convoitée par le Royaume de France, Metz devient une place forte française au xvie siècle, avant d'être annexée par l’Empire allemand au xixe siècle.
La ville présente une importante diversité architecturale, de l’antiquité au xxe siècle, riche d’un fort héritage médiéval et classique, d'influence française, mais aussi germanique, notamment dans le quartier impérial, aménagé lors de l'annexion de l'Alsace-Lorraine, représentatif de l'architecture wilhelmienne2.
Au dernier recensement de 2013, Metz comptait 118 634 habitants, ce qui en fait la commune la plus peuplée de Lorraine. Son unité urbaine compte environ 290 000 habitants et son aire urbaine 389 851 habitants en 2010, faisant d’elle la seconde aire urbaine de Lorraine après celle de Nancy. Ses habitants sont appelés les Messins.
S’affirmant comme cité de la communication et des technologies de l'information et de la communication avec sa technopole et son label ville Internet depuis 2012, l’antique cité marchande et militaire s’est voulue « ville jardin » égrenant son paysage urbain et architectural au fil de l’eau et des parcs, à travers une politique pionnière en France en matière d’écologie urbaine3,4,5.
En 2010, l'ouverture du Centre Pompidou-Metz symbolise la modernisation de la ville et de son image, amorcée au début des années 2000. Ainsi, Metz cherche à s'ériger comme plateforme pour l'art moderne et contemporain par des nouvelles politiques culturelles urbaines. Mais la ville sollicite également un classement à l'UNESCO pour son patrimoine ancien représenté par la cathédrale Saint-Étienne, l'une des plus importantes cathédrales gothiques de France6, et son quartier impérial.
