Metz is the capital of the Lorraine region of France and located in the Moselle departement that borders Luxembourg and Germany. Due to its German heritage, and military tradition, Metz is not quite your typical French town, but most of the criticism about Metz is unfair and clichéd. In fact, Metz is a unique town in France thanks to a great historical background and features a beautiful old town built using the pierre de Jaumont, a local yellow coloured limestone. It's 390,000 inhabitants agglomeration gathers historical elements of many periods : Roman vestiges, Middle Ages old city, 18th century classicism buildings, German-style neighbourhood of the annexation and contemporary museums.
Sitting astride the confluence of the Moselle and Seille rivers, Lorraine’s graceful capital, Metz, (pronounced ‘mess’) is ready to be feted. Though the city’s Gothic marvel of a cathedral, superlative art collections and Michelin star–studded dining scene long managed to sidestep the world spotlight, all that changed with the show-stopping arrival of Centre Pompidou-Metz in 2010. Yet the Pompidou is but the prelude to Metz’ other charms: buzzy pavement cafes and shady riverside parks, a beautiful old town built from golden Jeumont stone and a regal Quartier Impérial up for Unesco World Heritage status. Suddenly, everyone’s talking about Metz, and rightly so.
Even though Metz is close to Luxembourg and Germany, locals are not fluent in German and speak French just as any other French cities. The local dialect (Platt) is spoken in some parts of northern and eastern Moselle but has never been spoken in Metz. Employees of tourist places, museums and the Tourist Office are able to welcome visitors in English, German and often Spanish.
Place d'Armes, the square next to the cathedral, is notable for the four buildings that surround it. The Covered Market, opposite the cathedral, was historically the bishops' palace. Today it hosts stalls selling meats, cheeses, and other regional specialities. The Opera-Théâtre, not far from the Cathedral, is a theatre and opera house, built between 1732 and 1752 and the oldest in France.
The Railway Station (built in 1908) and its imperial area built during German occupation. In the summer, have a sandwich on le plan-d'eau, an extended garden with grass and a stretch of water where you can hire pedolos or little boat. The Esplanade, in the town center with a big fountain where young people lay down on the grass and cool off in the fountain. The Botanic Garden of 1866 with old greenhouses and more than 4,500 plants.
Cathedrale St-Etienne, place d'Armes. The Cathedral is a truly impressive structure, overlooking the river and the city. Saint-Pierre aux Nonnains church. The oldest church of France. Built in a roman gymnasium. The protestant temple, in front of the theatre, built by the German in the 19th century. And others 30 churches in the town. In the winter, take advantage of the Saint-Nicolas parade on the 6 of december.
If the weather is nice, rent a bike and head south along the river in the direction of Nancy. Paths are well-marked, well-maintained, and mostly flat. n December, Christmas markets can be found in many places. They are the best places to drink hot wine (vin chaud).
If you want to see sport games, professional teams includes: FC Metz (football), H2ML (women's handball), SMEC (men's handball and table tennis), RC Metz (rugby). Also Centre Pompidou-Metz and Musée de la Cour d'or. A museum about Metz history, from the prehistory to contemporary ages, built on still visible roman thermal bathes.

Metz in Lorraine, a video produced by Lorraine Tourisme and Prodaction.
From the Temple Neuf or the train station built during the German annexation, by way of Saint Etienne Cathedral, the Porte des Allemands and the Renaissance and Middle Ages neighbourhoods, Metz offers more than 3000 years of history. But the capital of Lorraine is also very contemporary with its urban landscape and in particular the Centre Pompidou-Metz that presents several unique modern and contemporary art temporary exhibitions each year.
Life is good in Metz with its gardens, the two rivers that cross the town (the Moselle and the Seille) and its large pedestrian-friendly centre.
Metz is also a town with large-scale events: the Mirabelle Festival, the Christmas markets (2nd largest in France)…

Cathedral of Saint Stephen of Metz, also known as Metz Cathedral, is a historic Roman Catholic cathedral in Metz, capital of Lorraine, France.
Saint-Étienne de Metz is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metz and the seat of the Bishop of Metz, currently Pierre Raffin.
The cathedral treasury exhibits the millennium rich collection of the Bishopric of Metz, including paraments and items used for the Eucharist.
Saint-Stephen of Metz has one of the highest naves in the world.
The cathedral is nicknamed the Good Lord's Lantern , displaying the largest expanse of stained glass in the world with 6,496 m2.
Those stained glass windows include works by Gothic and Renaissance master glass makers Hermann von Münster, Theobald of Lixheim, and Valentin Bousch and romantic Charles-Laurent Maréchal, tachist Roger Bissière, cubist Jacques Villon, and modernist Marc Chagall.
Saint-Stephen Cathedral is a Rayonnant Gothic edifice built with the local yellow Jaumont limestone.
Like in French Gothic architecture, the building is compact, with slight projection of the transepts and subsidiary chapels.
However, it displays singular, distinctive characteristics in both its ground plan and architecture compared to most of the other cathedrals.
Because of topography of Moselle valley in Metz, the common west-east axis of the ground plan could not be applied and the church is oriented north-northeast.
Moreover, unlike the French and German Gothic cathedrals having three portals surmounted by a rose window and two large towers, Saint-Stephen of Metz has a single porch at its western facade.
One enters laterally in the edifice by another portal placed at the south-western side of the narthex, declining the usual alignment of the entrance with the choir.
The nave is supported by flying buttresses and culminates at 41.41 metres high, making one of the highest naves in the world.
The height of the nave is contrasted by the relatively low height of the aisles with 14.3 metres high, reinforcing the sensation of tallness of the nave.
This feature permitted the architects to create large, tall expanses of stained glass.
Through its history, Saint-Stephen Cathedral was subjected to architectural and ornamental modifications with successive additions of Neoclassical and Neogothic elements.

Places to see in ( Metz - France ) Centre Pompidou Metz
The Centre Pompidou-Metz is a museum of modern and contemporary arts located in Metz, capital of Lorraine, France. It is a branch of Pompidou arts centre of Paris, and features semi-permanent and temporary exhibitions from the large collection of the French National Museum of Modern Art, the largest European collection of 20th and 21st century arts. The museum is the largest temporary exhibition space outside Paris in France with 5,000 m2 (54,000 sq ft) divided between 3 galleries, a theatre, and an auditorium.
The first piece of the monument designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban was laid on November 7, 2006, and the building was inaugurated by French President Nicolas Sarkozy on May 12, 2010. The building is remarkable for its roof structure, one of the largest and most complex built to date, which was inspired by a Chinese hat found in Paris by Shigeru Ban. Since its inauguration, the institution has become one of the most visited cultural venues in France outside Paris.
The Centre Pompidou-Metz is a large hexagon structured round a central spire reaching 77 m (253 ft), alluding to the 1977 opening date of the original Centre Pompidou of Paris. It possesses three rectangular galleries (Gallery 1, 2, and 3) weaving through the building at different levels, jutting out through the roof with huge picture windows angled towards landmarks such as the Saint-Stephen Gothic cathedral, the Imperial railway station, the Arsenal Concert Hall built by Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill, the Arènes indoor sport arena built by French architect Paul Chemetov, and the Seille park. The great nave covers 1,200 m2 (13,000 sq ft) and provides flexibility for the exhibition of large artworks, with the ceiling rising progressively from a height of 5.7 m (19 ft) to 18 m (59 ft).
The Centre Pompidou-Metz also displays around 3 to 4 unique temporary exhibitions per year, which are not presented elsewhere. Most of the artworks exhibited are from the large collection of the National Museum of Modern Art, which encompasses the largest European collection of modern and contemporary arts and the second in the world. The museum works in close collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Luxembourgian Museum of Modern Art, or the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe in joint initiatives.
The Centre Pompidou-Metz promotes the local art scene in collaborating with the Regional Contemporary Art Fund of Lorraine. In addition to the temporary exhibitions, the Centre Pompidou-Metz museum features seasonal programming with contemporary live shows in its theater and organizes meetings and conferences in its auditorium with worldly recognized, as well as, local artists.
The Centre Pompidou-Metz edifice and surrounding Metz are sometimes used as support for the artistic production displayed during the temporary exhibitions. For example, the architectural structure of the Centre Pompidou-Metz was used as support for a visual art project by French visual artists Simon Geilfus, Yannick Jacquet, and Thomas Vaquié. Also, French aerial photographer Yann Arthus-Bertrand captured Metz from high up, giving a privileged views of the museum and the city for the exhibition Views from above
