PLEIN AIR IMPRESSIONS - What It Is and How We Do It
Up North Impressions An Artist Gathering Showcase
Up North Impressions An Artist Gathering Showcase opens at the Jordan River Art Center Sunday August 12 and runs through Sept. 16. The exhibit represents works created from the Artist Gatherings sessions either plein air (on site) at various Northern Michigan locations or at the Center during inclement weather and winter months. In the early years a theme was picked. In 2006 northern Michigan barns were chosen that followed a statewide theme of Michigan barns. Other themes, were flowers and gardens, and special noted northern Michigan sites. Over the past several years, Karen Kimmell and her committee arrangements have chosen a variety of sites and the schedule is published in the spring. The group meets weekly at a specific time. Rain dates are scheduled at the art center where artists may work on projects or paint from still life setups. The group continues throughout the winter months with educational activities and group art activities. The group has attracted local artists as well as seasonal artists who travel from as far as Indian River and Kewadin to participate. All media are represented including watercolor, oil and acrylic painting, pastel, photography and drawing. The comraderie, friendships and gentle critique have developed positive relationships and increased the skills of participating artists.
More that 150 art works will be exhibited producing an exciting show of creative, diverse artworks. Prudy Barber a committee member states Every day we are surrounded by beautiful and inspiring views here Up North. We each see the same view differently and form our own impressions of our surroundings. What appears to be ordinary to one person may be extraordinary to another. Other committee members are Lynn Carson, Roddy Dammeyer and Margaret Moran.
The exhibit runs thru Sept. 16 at the Jordan River Art Center, 301 Main St., East Jordan.
If you have questions or wish another view time for groups contact K. Kimmell mailto:kakimmell@gmail.com or P. Barber mailto:psbarber@jdclipper.net.

Charlevoix house torched for Frontier Boys film
The former Campbell house located at 108 Park Ave. is no more. It was set afire at around 5 a.m. on Wednesday March 24 under the close supervision of the Charlevoix City Fire Department. The house was burned for a scene in the feature film The Frontier Boys which is expected to be released in winter 2011. The fire was also used as an opportunity for local fire departments to conduct necessary training. The location will be turned into a parking lot later this spring when construction on Park Avenue from Bridge to State streets begins with sewer and street improvements expected to be finished by late May.
