???????? Charmouth, Jurassic Coast, England - UK TRAVEL VIDEO
The history of Charmouth dates back to the Iron Age when a Celtic tribe, the Durotriges, founded a settlement. Evidence of hill forts can still be seen in the area. The name Charmouth originated from the Saxon 'Cerne' meaning stony river, Charmouth was therefore known as 'Cernmunde'.

Lyme Regis Fossil Festival
The next annual Lyme Regis Fossil Festival will take place on 3-5 May, 2013 (fossilfestival.com). Set in the heart of the stunning Jurassic Coast - England's only natural World Heritage Site, Lyme played a key role in the birth of the earth sciences. Mary Anning and her brother Joseph uncovered a huge ichthyosaur in 1811 when she was only 12, and she went on to find the first two plesiosaurs and the first pterosaur outside Germany. Today local fossil collectors continue to unearth spectacular new specimens, and even the casual visitor can trip over vertebrae and ammonites on the beach.
The Fossil Festival encourages visitors of all ages to enjoy the incredible natural history right at their feet. There is a free Grand Marquee on the beach full of hands-on art and science, and well as walks, talks, exhibitions, a Fossil Fair and performances and other extraordinary experiences. We welcome more than 50 scientists from our partners, including the Natural History Museum, Natural England, British Antarctic Survey, Jurassic Coast team, Plymouth University, Dorset Geologists Association, Lyme Regis Museum, Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, University of Portsmouth, the National Trust, RockWatch, National Museum of Wales, Isle of Wight's Dinosaur Isle, RSPB, MEMO, and many more.
We've a giant Travelling Pliosaur Cinema, and OnBoard - the flight simulator that takes you above, along and below the Jurassic Coast, as well as back to Pangaea.
Don't miss the fun - once you've been you'll always come back!

The Scelidosaurus Song
THE SCELIDOSAURUS lived 191 million years ago and was first found in Charmouth, Dorset on the Jurassic Coast. It remains the most complete dinosaur fossil found in the British Isles. You can see a cast of the fossil in Charmouth Heritage Centre on the Jurassic Coast WHS or check it out in Bristol Museum. The BRILLIANT Dr Tim Ewin of the @NHM_London told us all about the #Scelidosaurus and how we think it died as part of the Big Jurassic Classroom.... So we made up a song about it.
OH Scelidosaurus
A fossil oh so grand
OH Scelidosaurus
A dinosaur that’s of this land
You die and float into the sea
Your swelling body pops!
You sink down for an eternity
And slowly turn to rock
And you should have much more fame my dear
Your fossil’s so compete
But ‘gainst a Diplodocus
It’s quite hard to compete…
(Dinosaur he dies
On the sea bed he lies
Dinosaur fossilise
Dinosaur we scrutinize)

20190219 Two people cut off Charmouth StAthan
Timely reminder to check the tide times after two people were rescued from an incoming tide last week at Golden Cap, near Charmouth.
Just before 17:45pm on Tuesday 19 February HM Coastguard received a call from the Charmouth Heritage Centre rporeting that two people were cut off by the tide underneath Golden Cap.
Lyme Regis Coastguard Rescue Team and the Lyme Regis Lifeboat were sent to the scene. Due to the sea state and the quick incoming tide, the lifeboat was unable to recover the casualties but one lifeboat crew member, managed to get onto the shore to support the casualties, until the St Athan Coastguard helicopter arrived.
Once both casualties were on board the helicopter they were brought ashore where they were met by the waiting Coastguard Rescue Team.
A spokesperson for HM Coastguard said: ‘These two people were very lucky last week. They were in a very precarious position - and it was extremely lucky that a member of the public noticed their plight and called the Coastguard.
‘Remember to always check the weather and tidal conditions before you set out so that you can prepare accordingly. At sea changes in tidal streams could make conditions worse, particularly if the wind and tide are against each other. Consider whether you could become cut off by the incoming tide, above all do not take risks. Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’
