Virginia Beach | First Landing State Park Camping | (2018) Changing Lanes!
We visited VA Beach in May of this year (2018). Although Chad used to live in the area for the Navy, it had been nearly 25 years since he was there. I (Tara) had never been there and never really spent any time in the state of Virginia. (that is going to change!)
We arrived in Virginia Beach exhausted after two long days of travel, a traffic jam and a wrong turn down a residential street that Chad would end up having to back the rig all the way back up! By the time we finally arrived at First Landing State Park, most of the good first-come-first-serve spots were already taken, so we settled on a site that backed up to the noisy Shore Drive. Luckily, we were able to move sites the next morning and ended up with a beach house for the week!! We got the best site in the entire park and had amazing views!!
Although Chad lived in the area for 5 years, he had never ridden a motorcycle across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. So, we did just that!! It was both amazing and a bit scary (for me at least). There are 2 underwater tunnels and 3 bridges that landed us over on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and, eventually to Cape Charles. Cape Charles was a charming little town that gave us a feeling of stepping back in time.
During our stay, Chad was able to reconnect with a longtime friend of his, Dave, and his two boys. It was great for me to spend time with them as well and for Dave to show us around town (and to treat us to the best sushi ever!)
We were able to get on the motorcycle (Lucile) a second time, so we could check out the other side of First Landing State Park and for Chad to show me around the beach strip.
For a first-timer to Virginia Beach, I loved it!!! And for Chad, it was great for him to go back to a place where he spent so much time and made so many memories. We even took a civilian tour of his old workplace - Norfolk Naval Base / Naval Air Station!!
I hope to get back to First Landing and (hopefully) get Site 7 again!! Our time in Virginia was not limited to VA Beach, so stay tuned for our an upcoming video on Williamsburg!!

World's Most Secret Islands You Might Not Know More
Madeline Island- Location: Lake Superior, just off Wisconsin
Size: 14 miles long by three miles wide
Population: 300 year-round; 2,500 in summer
Midwesterners need not go far for a secluded island paradise. Part of Wisconsin's Apostle Islands archipelago, Madeline has many trappings of a tropical oasis—sandy beaches, sailing charters, sea caves, cliff-jumping, and even stand-up paddleboarding. No wonder the population swells in summer. Visit in winter and you can make first tracks on a dogsled or see ice caves.
Kayak to sea caves, historical lighthouses, and a century-old shipwreck with Adventure Vacations or Living Adventure. Raise a glass to live music at the quirky Tom's Burned Down Cafe. Don't miss locally caught trout on The Pub Restaurant & Wine Bar's beachfront patio.
Tangier Island - Location: U.S. Atlantic Coast, just off Virginia
Size: Three miles long by one mile wide
This little island 12 miles off of northern Virginia is one of the last isolated fishing villages left on the Chesapeake Bay. Out here it's a completely different world. Locals speak in a thick accent that sounds like a cross between Elizabethan English and the Old South. They drive golf carts on the virtually carless island. And the salty Tangier watermen still carry on the centuries-old tradition of harvesting crabs in the bay.
During a waterman tour, a Tangier captain teaches you how to pull crab pots. Try the incredible crab bisque and crab cakes made by wives of watermen at Fisherman's Corner Restaurant. Rent a free kayak at the Tangier History Museum and Interpretive Cultural Center and follow the island's water trails.
Staniel Cay - Location: Eastern Caribbean, Bahamas Out Islands
Size: Less than two square miles
A tiny link in the chain of Exuma Cays, this gem lies 250 miles off the coast of Florida in the Bahamas' famously clear turquoise waters. Many of the Exhumas are private (Johnny Depp owns one) or ultraexclusive, but Staniel Cay is an exception. Here, you can stay in a cottage on stilts over the ocean for only $165 per night. Everything but the price seems top-shelf.
Fernando De Noronha - Location: Western Atlantic, 220 miles off Brazil's coast
Size: Seven square miles
Peaks of a submerged mountain range rise up out of the sea to form this beautiful Brazilian 21-island archipelago. The largest island is the only one populated, but throngs of vacationers never clog its perfect coves of white-sand beaches. The government restricts tourism to 420 visitors at a time. Yes, this is the kind of place you want to (and can) be left to your own devices with a little motorbike: There's just one traffic light.
Two major ocean currents meet here, making it one of the world's best places to see a diverse range of marine life while snorkeling or scuba diving. All visitors stay in small pousadas whose owners take a personal interest in guests—a bit like having your own valet.
Isle Of Mull - Location: Eastern Atlantic, off Scotland's west coast
Size: 338 square miles
Mighty seaside cliffs. Rugged mountain ridges. Moorland peninsulas. It's a picture-perfect Scottish scene in the Inner Hebrides islands. Filled with abundant wildlife and dramatic scenery, Mull is one of Scotland's best places for seeing whales (April through September) and for spotting the white-tailed eagle, the U.K.'s largest bird of prey. Hike the coastal and glen trails or the more challenging peaks with views of neighboring islands Iona and Staffa.
Wilderness Scotland has hike-and-stay packages with the Tiroran House Hotel that include breakfast and dinner for less than $200 per person per night. In the colorful port of Tobermory, dig into fish-and-chips or the fresh scallops (a Prince Charles favorite) at the Fisherman's Pier Fish & Chip Van. Wash it down with a visit to Tobermory's malt whisky distillery.
Pulau Ubin - Location: South China Sea, off Singapore
Size: Four square miles
One of the last rural holdouts in Singapore, Pulau Ubin (Granite Island) near Changi Point is a freeze-frame of Malay kampong village life in the 1960s. Thatched-roof homes sit among forested rolling hills and abandoned granite quarries. Fishermen live on kelongs, old wooden fishing houses built on stilts over the water. It's a soul-soothing escape from the highly urbanized buzz on the nearby mainland.
Experience village life, thick forests, and the occasional monkey or wild pig from the seat of a rented bicycle or on a walking tour. The island is known for its great seafood restaurants, and the steamed crab is divine. See interesting low-tide marine life at Chek Jawa or hit the sandy beach at East Coast Park. For a kampong-style stay, ride to Celestial Resort. Rooms start at less than $100 per night.
Rhode Island (/ˌroʊd ˈaɪlɨnd/ or /rɵˈdaɪlɨnd/), officially the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, is a state in the New England region of the United States. Rhode Island is the smallest in area, the eighth least populous, but the second most densely populated of the 50 US states behind New Jersey. About Mojo Collins:
Not many people have performed with or opened shows for Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin and Big Brother & the Holding Company, Steve Miller, Santana, The Grateful Dead, Ike and Tina Turner, Muddy Waters, Leon Redbone, Sly and the Family Stone, Blue Cheer, The Spinners, Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs, Keith Shealy, and the incomparable Stevie Ray Vaughan. After accomplishing all of this, world renowned guitarist Mojo Collins considers his dues to be paid and is currently living his lifelong dream as a professional singer, guitarist, and songwriter on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. His music continues to receive critical acclaim with airplay in the US and 9 other countries over the last 20 years. Mojo has been the recipient of several prestigious songwriting awards, including the NC Arts Council Fellowship in Music for Songwriting. An active preservationist, Mojo was proud to perform at the dedication ceremony of NC's Jockey's Ridge State Park and the relighting and rededication of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.
Mojo's musical career began at age five with his Grandmother teaching him songs on her old Stella guitar. His skills were honed at family jams and lessons given by his father, Wild Bill Collins. Later, he joined the Air Force and was staioned in Montana. Here he wrote much of the material which he would later take to San Francisco with the band Initial Shock. In San Francisco, Mojo and Initial Shock made their way to stage at the legendary Fillmore West and finally to a contract with the king of all rock promoters, Bill Graham.
Sawbuck, the self-titled debut album from Mojo's collaboration with musicians Chuck Ruff, Steve Hatley, Star Donaldson, and Ronnie Montrose, received national attention. In 1971 Mojo relocated from San Francisco to Eastern North Carolina, married, and started a family which now includes 2 sons, their wives, and 6 fine grandchildren!
HIs original music is presented in concert as well as in schools K4 to university, church music education programs, The Lost Colony, Devon to Dare, Make a Preservation, Flight of Magic, and History of Folk and Blues. In 2007 Mojo released Mojo Collins Live. Mojo is currently creating new original works for Opening Act, a rock and blues multi-media touring concert. Enjoy your experience with Mojo online and let the music take along its journey from the 60's music scene of Haight Ashbury, to the legendary Fillmore Records / Fillmore West and all the way back home to the remote beauty of coastal Carolina.
