Indianama – Chhatta Chowk: A Historical Bazaar
Among various historical markets in Delhi…… Chhatta-Chowk at the Red Fort is a one of its kind……. this vaulted arcade housing a string of double-storied shops was especially built for, of and by the royals...
Built by Shah Jahan, this market was inspired by the idea of a covered market in Peshawar…
A common design in West Asia it was an innovation of sorts in India…. Shah Jahan had instructed Mukarmat Khan, who was supervising the construction of the Red Fort, to build a similar covered market inside the fort…
It is also a unique example of Mughal architecture with beautiful arches and painted ceilings….
The Bazar has been popular through many names such as Bazar-i-Musaqqaf or Meena Bazar…. it is divided into 32 sections/shops on each side and was a premier hub for trade of silk, velvet, precious stones, silver, gold among other things...
This 300 year old market is still functioning... Just as one enters the fort after crossing the Lahori Gate.
Red Fort Delhi 3 Chatta Chowk - Lahori Gate and Chhatta Bazar
The main gate, Lahore Gate, is one of the emotional and symbolic focal points of the modern Indian nation and attracts a major crowd on each Independence Day.

The Chhatta Chowk is a long passage way that contains a bazaar, or market, located in the Red Fort of Delhi, India.
The Chhatta Chowk is located behind the Lahori Gate and is set within an arched passage. It is lined with two-story flats that contain 32 arched bays serving as shops. During Shah Jahan's reign, the Chhatta Chowk was very exclusive, specializing in trading goods such as silk, brocades, velvet, gold, silverware, jewellery, gems and precious stones, catering to the luxurious tastes of imperial households.
Chhatta Chowk translated into English means, covered bazaar. Its history dates back to the 17th century. It was inspired by another marketplace which Shah Jahan had seen in Peshawar in 1646.
It is a unique example of Mughal architecture in which bazaars were typically open-air. As such, the bazaar was formerly known as Bazaar-i-Musaqaf, with a saqaf, meaning roof.
The arches were walled up in the 20th century and the passage thus lost its original appearance. The ceiling was also originally painted in colours. There are plans to restore the bazaar.

Meena Bazaar' , this bazaar earlier was known as 'Bazaar-i-Musaqqaf' (the market with 'saqaf' means roof) or 'Chhatta-bazaar' (a roofed market). Lahori-Gate entrance of the Red fort leads into the shadows of this ' Covered Market' or 'Vaulted Arcade'. Shah Jahan was perhaps impelled by political reasons to position Chhatta Bazaar at the principal ceremonial entrance to the fort, as an appropriate place to exhibit the Mughal Empire's growing wealth, talents and capabilities.

CHANDNI CHOWK SUNDAY MARKET | CHEAP MARKET | JEANS, SHARTS AND ALL I Mini Tibet in Chandni chowk.
Chandni Chowk : It is the perfect place to shop in. This densely populated market has been around for more than three centuries and was once visited by merchants from Turkey, China and even Holland. You may buy curios and souvenirs from here. Dariba Kalan is known for its pearl, gold and silver jewellery and attar (natural perfumes). Gulab Singh Johri Mal, established in 1819, are well-known manufacturers and exporters of attar. A visit to Khari Baoli is a must for the spice-lover — don't forget spices are what connected India to the West. Kinari Bazaar is the best place to look for zari and zardozi trimmings and tinsel. The cloth bazaar of Katra Neel offers all kinds of fabrics such as silks, satin, crepe, cotton and muslin. Bhagirath Palace is Asia's largest market for electrical
Chor Bazaar: Located near the Red Fort and Lajpat Rai Market, Chor Bazaar literally means Thieves' Market. From electronic items to designer clothes, you can find everything here. Prices are enticingly low but the life of the product can't be guaranteed. You have to depend on verbal assurances and on your own judgement.
Old Delhi ShoppingChhatta Chowk: The Chhatta Chowk Bazaar, which dates back to the 17th century, was meant for ladies in veil. In this covered thoroughfare leading up to the Red Fort, the caravan traders would lay out their wares and move away. The ladies could then come and make their choice without being observed. Today, the market has 40-odd shops selling artificial and semi-precious jewellery, embroidered bags, hand-painted wall hangings and 'antiques' with dubious authenticity.
Chandni Chowk, is one of the oldest and busiest markets located in central north Delhi. It is believed to be the largest wholesale market in Asia. This market has some of the most well-known Indian-wear shops in the capital. Right from daily-wear sarees to bridal sarees, suits and lehengas, Chandni Chowk is truly the hub of the latest fashion at the most affordable prices. The speciality of the market lies not only in its affordability but also the modernity of patterns, designs and styles on the dress items. That is not to say that stores offering traditional ethnic Indian textiles and embroideries cannot be found. There are also many accessory shops in this market dealing in precious and semi-precious metals and stones.

My Review:
In my opinion Chabbra's is one of the best shop for replicas of Sabyasachi, Manish Malhotra, Anita Dongre with prices ranging from Rs3000 to Rs10000 for non bridal lehengas and Rs10000 to Rs100000 for bridal lehengas- which is a very affordable price for a bridal/wedding lehenga! : Wedding lehengas are available in a wide range, varying from traditional lehengas to contemporary lehengas, from designer lehengas to Lehenga cholis. Moreover there is a wide range of colors available to choose from.
AN EXCLUSIVE RANGE of Designer Replicas of lehengas worn by so many actresses like Anushka Sharma, Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone by designers like Sabyasachi that costs lacs but for middle class people like us these replicas will do! Though the prime color for any wedding dress is preferred to be red, brides have become quite experimental and opt for distinctive colors like peach, lilac, pink, sky blue, sea green and medium range blues. Therefore, to cater to the needs of ever changing preferences of the customers, Lehengas are now available in a plethora of colors.
In case of evening occasion, you can go for lehngas in deep navy and sapphire blue color with silver accents. For morning function, you can choose from golden and copper colors.

Shopping at Delhi's Oldest Market - Chatta Chowk Lal Qila (Red Fort)
The Khan Market Of Mughals - #ChhattaChowk Is The Biggest Known Secret Of #RedFort! Built in the 17th century, the oldest standing market for the nobles is housed in inside the Red Fort. You may know people who have been living in the city for decades, but haven't visited Red Fort, or maybe you are one of those yourself. While the light & sound show at the fort has been much talked about, we're throwing some light on the hidden market inside this fortress, built by Shah Jahan.
Chhatta Chowk, literally translating to 'covered-market', was built for the queens residing in the harem of Red Fort. The market during the reign of the Mughals, was only for the nobles and royalty! Located near the Lahore Gate entrance of the Red Fort, it houses about 40 shops. Some of the shop owners here claim to be descendants of the artists, who owned the business during the Mughal era.
The market is built inside a covered passage, giving the queens a relief from the hot Delhi summers, we guess. You can find artefacts, #handcrafted textiles and replicas of old manuscripts - which look as good as the original ones. In short, it's like the market of Agrabah from Aladdin - except that you won't find a magic carpet here, but you can find Kashmiri Pashmina!
There's not much scope of bargaining here, which is kind of a bummer for many! The Archaeology Department is planning to restore this market to its original glory. How cool is that? Till then, get your gang together and make a visit to this quaint market before it gets too hot.
