St. Mary's Church, also named the Church of Purgatorio, probably coming from a monastery, has got a single nave. In the façade, a little rose window and the beautiful wooden inlayed entrance door, dating back to 1504, stand out. Both these elements, excluded the flower decorations and the carved amphoras in the arch of the entrance door, definitely seem to be inspired to the models of the Romanic tradition.
Inside the Church, the most important element is the choir of the original, single room plant, spread by the Mendicant Orders, one of the rarest examples of remaining, none cone places in the area of Vasto.
Moreover, inside the building, it's possible to admire the ruins of a series of frescos of the 15th century, dedicated to the Passion of Christ; one of them, the Last Dinner, deserves particular attention. In fact, this fresco, shows the uneven peculiarity of a female figure close to Jesus Christ, in the centre of the picture, together with the Apostles.
The presence of other features is not unusual on itself; often there are servants, or customers' portraits, but, in this case, the woman in the picture holds a bin, probably a cruet for ointments, which makes her identify with Mary Magdalene.
Carunchio
Surrounded by Turkey oak, beech and chestnut trees, the village is clung to a hill on the right side of the Treste River that commands a great view of Maiella and Gargano.
The first sources date back to the 12th Century. After the 14th Century, it was feud of the d'Avalos and of the Caracciolo Princes. Originally the village was probably situated in the locality of Taverna, later in the 16th Century it has been moved to the current seat, perhaps because the earliest inhabitants considered it more defensible from Saracen and Slav frequent invasions. What is left of the ancient town walls are the two Gates of Coluccia and Nocicchia, which is also known as the Big Gate. In the highest part of the medieval village, the fortified buildings of Turdò and Castelli with their imposing mass seem to evoke the shape of the ancient Castle. Further down, the parish Church of San Giovanni Battista hosts in its interior a rare pipe organ of the 17th Century, manufactured by hands of the Molise region.
Medieval architecture features are to be found in the structure of the Church of Purgatorio, whose interior holds a marvelous series of frescos of the 14th Century.
Ventricina salami is one of the main characters of the festival that takes place in Carunchio on the 10th and 11th of August, so as the typical truffle crop.
Tuttavia, all'interno, è ancora possibile ammirare dell'antica chiesa gli arredi lignei, i dipinti e altri manufatti artistici.
The Ancient Church of Santa Maria della Stella, shows today only its modern structure. The first plant of the church dates back before the 15th century, but it was re-build from its foundations in the 60es, due to its precarious conditions. Placed in the western, particularly steep area of the ancient historical old town, it was one of the most typical elements of the fortified village.
The ancient church, where Francesco Di Tullio di Pescopennataro worked on the restores in 1863, showed three naves and was covered by a barrel vault. It showed also several chapels dedicated to Saint Nicholas, Saint Vitus, Saint Roch, Santa Maria della Stella, and Santa Maria al Purgatorio. During the demolition, the monumental organ, the wooden doors, the Baroque confessional and the baptismal font have been lost.
Nevertheless, inner part, it is still possible to admire the old furniture, the pictures and the artefacts of the old church.
The body of Santa Clementina, the saint patron of the village, is worshipped in Santa Maria della Stella. The holiday is every year, during the last Sunday of September.
