Traveling United States | San Diego Zoo | Zoo Animals in Old Town San Diego California
The San Diego Zoo is a zoo in Balboa Park, San Diego, California housing over 3,700 animals of more than 650 species and subspecies. Its parent organization, San Diego Zoo Global, is the largest zoological membership association in the world, with more than 250,000 member households and 130,000 child memberships, representing more than a half million people. San Diego Zoo pioneered the concept of open-air, cageless exhibits that re-create natural animal habitats. It is one of the few zoos in the world that houses the giant panda. In 2013, the zoo added a new Koalafornia Adventure, providing an Australian experience.
It is privately operated by the nonprofit Zoological Society of San Diego on 100 acres (40 ha) of parkland leased from the City of San Diego, and ownership of all animals, equipment and other assets rests with the City of San Diego. The San Diego Zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), and a member of the Zoological Association of America (ZAA) and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). San Diego Zoo Global also operates the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research.

Guide to Visiting the San Diego Zoo with Kids
A San Diego visit isn't complete without a day at the world-famous San Diego Zoo. Find out what to see and do when taking on the San Diego Zoo with kids and families.
List of Exhibits and Attractions of San Diego Zoo Safari Park
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park, named the San Diego Wild Animal Park until 2010, is an 1,800 acre (730 ha) zoo in the San Pasqual Valley area of San Diego, California, near Escondido. It is one of the largest tourist attractions in San Diego County. The park houses a large array of wild and endangered animals including species from the continents of Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America, and Australia. The park is in a semi-arid environment, and one of its most notable features is the Africa Tram which explores the expansive African exhibits. These free-range enclosures house such animals as antelopes, giraffes, buffalo, cranes, and rhinoceros. The park is also noted for its California condor breeding program, the most successful such program in the United States. The park, visited by 2 million people annually, houses over 2,600 animals representing more than 300 species, as well as 3,500 plant species. Depending on the season, the park has about 400 to 600 employees. The park is also Southern California's quarantine center for zoo animals imported into the United States through San Diego. The park has the world's largest veterinary hospital. Next door to the hospital is the Institute for Conservation Research which holds the park's Frozen Zoo. Both the park and the San Diego Zoo are run by the Zoological Society of San Diego. The park is 32 miles (51 km) away from the zoo, at 15500 San Pasqual Valley Road east of Escondido, California, along California State Route 78. Although the park is primarily within the San Diego city limits, it has an Escondido address.

CONSERVATION
The Safari Park was a major factor in the recovery of the California condor. Beginning in 1980, it worked with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Los Angeles Zoo to start a captive breeding program. The last 22 condors were taken into captivity in 1987 To breed the condors quickly, the Safari Park would remove the eggs from the nests to induce the females to lay a second egg. The removed egg hatches in an incubator and is raised with a condor handpuppet to prevent human imprinting, while the second egg is raised by its parents. Captive-bred condors were reintroduced into the wild beginning in 1992, and today their population is 369, with 191 in the wild as of March 2011. On December 14, 2014, Angalifu, a 44-year-old male northern white rhinoceros, died at the park. This left only five northern white rhinos left in the world, including one female at the Safari Park. On November 22,2015, the park's last Northern White Rhino, Nola was euthanized due to bacterial infection and her health rapidly declining.

San Diego Zoo - August 2013
My visit to the San Diego Zoo in August of 2013.
San Diego Zoo
- More than 4,000 creatures reside at this celebrated zoo, started in 1916 and today it's lavished with more than 1 million plants on its 1,900 acres.
The zoo is one of only four in the United States with giant pandas and many other rare species are here as well, including Buerger's tree kangaroos of New Guinea, long-billed kiwis from New Zealand, wild Przewalski's horses from Mongolia, lowland gorillas from Africa, and giant tortoises from the Galapagos.
Monkey Trails and Forest Tales is the zoo's largest, most elaborate habitat, re-creating a wooded forest full of endangered species such as the mandrill monkey, clouded leopard, and pygmy hippopotamus. Absolutely Apes showcases orangutans and siamangs (black-furred gibbons) of Indonesia, while next door is Gorilla Tropics, where two troops of Western lowland gorillas roam an 8,000-square-foot habitat. The Children's Zoo features a nursery with baby animals and a petting area where kids can cuddle up to sheep, goats, and the like.
There's also a sea lion show at the 3,000-seat amphitheater. If your feet get tired, consider taking a 35-minute Guided Bus Tour that provides a narrated overview that covers about 70% of the facility.
San Diego Zoo 1-Day Pass
Grab your 1-day pass to meet the wildlife of the San Diego Zoo.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park - Wild Animal Park | California Travel Tips
Veronica Hill tours San Diego Wild Animal Park — recently renamed the San Diego Zoo Safari Park — in this episode of California Travel Tips.
The San Diego attraction, which is a sister property of the San Diego Zoo, offers dozens of fun tours through the park, from Segway and mule rides to overnight Roar and Snore safaris. It's also home to the Flightline Wild Animal park zip line tour, which is the longest in the Continental United States. One of the most popular San Diego attractions, the zip line tours are an added fee (in addition to park admission).
This expansive 2,200-acre wild animal park is home to hundreds of wild animals in a natural Savannah setting. Rather than keep animals in tight enclosures like the San Diego Zoo, the park allows many of them to roam large open spaces. That said, it's clear you're going to do plenty of walking, so be sure to wear a comfortable pair of shoes. The Kilimanjaro Safari Walk, with its 2 miles of steep hilly trails, offers glimpses of lions, elephants and other wildlife. In addition to the Africa Tram Safari that's included with your ticket, you can take part in dozens of adventures like Photo Caravan Jeep Tours, where you can hand-feed roaming giraffes and rhinos. The park's Flightline is the longest zip line in the continental United States. For a unique overnight adventure, don't miss the park's Roar and Snore safari in a luxury tent. It comes complete with dinner, s'mores and a pancake breakfast!
Tips: During the summer, the animals are most active in early morning and sunset.
