EMMANUEL UNGARO MARKS 35 YEARS IN FASHION WITH NEW FRAGRANCE
Italian EMMANUEL UNGARO celebrated three and half decades in the fashion business with the launch of the new fragrance 'Desnuda'.
The designer reminisced about his career at the glittering launch party in New York on Wednesday, at the Armory on Lexington Avenue.
The son of an Italian tailor, Ungaro's first toy was a sewing machine. When he was older he became a pupil of Cristobal Balenciaga, haute couture's 'master of masters', working with him for 6 years.
He learned well, going on to revolutionise Paris Couture by opening his own house in the 1960s and introducing ready-to-wear designs.
Part of his success is due to his ability to adjust to the changing nature of the fashion industry. Ungaro comments that when he started out as a young designer he could survive just by concentrating on high couture designs. Today, all designers have to think in terms of broader sales, I am afraid that you lose part of creativity with the supposed marketing
Today the designer boasts a core of 200 couture customers worldwide, 60 who order every single season.
His client list includes celebrities like Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez, while the age range of women who wear his designs ranges from young to old. Ungaro is not surprised there is no separation between very young people and aged people fashion is the best communication in the world
Today he continues to work from the workshops at 2 avenue Montaigne.
As the last surviving pupil of Cristobal Balenciaga, Ungaro is keen to pass on his knowledge. He is determined to teach what he knows to his co-designer and head assistant Gianbattista Valli.
The house has been in partnership with Salvatore Ferragamo since 1997 and has now launched its newest fragrance Desnuda. The fragrance is applied with a brush and 'painted' onto the body.
