Driving Downtown - Cincinnati's Main Street 4K - USA
Driving Downtown Streets - Vine Street - Cincinnati Ohio USA - Episode 66.
Starting Point: .
Vine Street functions as Cincinnati's central thoroughfare. It bisects the downtown neighborhood, as well as the adjacent Over-the-Rhine neighborhood.
Most of the buildings on Vine Street are commercial, and represent the city's historic business district. The street is well maintained, however many of the buildings are deteriorating. Vine street is also known for its large amount of pedestrian traffic, particularly around Fountain Square.
Cincinnati is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio that serves as county seat of Hamilton County. Settled in 1788, the city is located on the north side of the confluence of the Licking with the Ohio River. The latter forms the border between the states of Ohio and Kentucky. Cincinnati is the third-largest city in Ohio and the 65th-largest city in the United States with a population of 298,165 people (2014), making it the 28th-largest Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) in the United States and the largest centered in Ohio. The city is also part of the larger Cincinnati–Middletown–Wilmington Combined Statistical Area (CSA), which had a population of 2,172,191 in the 2010 census.
In the early 19th century, Cincinnati was an American boomtown in the heart of the country; it rivaled the larger coastal cities in size and wealth. Throughout much of the 19th century, it was listed among the top 10 U.S. cities by population, surpassed only by New Orleans and the older, established settlements of the Eastern Seaboard; at one point holding the position of America's sixth-largest city for a period spanning consecutive census reports from 1840 until 1860. It was by far the largest city in the west. Because it is the first major American city founded after the American Revolution as well as the first major inland city in the country, Cincinnati is sometimes thought of as the first purely American city.[10]
Cincinnati developed with less European immigration or influence than eastern cities attracted in the same period; however, it received a significant number of German immigrants, who founded many of the city's cultural institutions. By the end of the 19th century, with the shift from steamboats to railroads drawing off freight shipping, trade patterns had altered and Cincinnati's growth slowed considerably. The city was surpassed in population by other inland cities, particularly Chicago, which developed based on commodity exploitation and the railroads, and St. Louis, for decades after the Civil War the gateway to westward migration.
Cincinnati is home to two major sports teams, the Cincinnati Reds, the oldest franchise in Major League Baseball, and the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League. The University of Cincinnati, founded in 1819, is one of the 50 largest in the United States.[11] Cincinnati is known for its historic architecture. In the late 1800s, Cincinnati was commonly referred to as Paris of America, due mainly to such ambitious architectural projects as the Music Hall, Cincinnatian Hotel, and Shillito Department Store.
Economy
Major corporations have their head offices in Cincinnati, such as Procter & Gamble, The Kroger Company, and Macy's, Inc., amongst others. Kroger, the largest employer in the city, has 17,000 employees. The University of Cincinnati is the second largest, with 15,162 employees.
Arts and Culture
Cincinnati's culture is strongly influenced by its history of German and Irish immigrants and its geographical position on the border of the Southern United States and Midwestern United States.[citation needed] In the mid to late nineteenth century, Cincinnati became a major destination for German and Irish immigrants. In 1830 residents with German roots made up 5 percent of the population, as many had migrated from Pennsylvania; ten years later the number had risen to 30 percent.[65] Thousands of German immigrants entered the city after the revolutions in the German states in 1848 and by 1900, more than 60 percent of its population was of German background.
Sports
Cincinnati has two major league teams, seven minor league teams, five college institutions with sports teams, and seven major sports venues. Cincinnati's two major league teams are Major League Baseball's Reds, who were named for America's first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings;[88][89][90] and the Bengals of the National Football League. On Major League Baseball Opening Day, Cincinnati has the distinction of holding the traditional opener in baseball each year, due to its baseball history. Many children in Cincinnati skip school on Opening Day, which is commonly thought of as a city holiday.[91]

40th anniversary of record cold, frozen Ohio River in Cincinnati
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - What were you doing 40 years ago? Odds are good you were looking to stay warm if you were in the Tri-State. But maybe you were one of the ones that dared to walk across the frozen Ohio River on January, 18 in 1977.
Cincinnati resident Mark Clark recalls, What do you say about 25 degrees below zero unless you've been to Minnesota? It was cold. It was brutal. It was very bad, and we still had wind at that point, so the wind chill was terrible.
Kathy Boutiere, another Cincinnati resident, said, It was just unbelievable. There were so many people out on the ice, and it wasn't just flat ice. It was big chunks, so you really had to walk carefully.
Weather records show two of the top 10 all-time coldest high temperatures (-1° and 0°) and three of the all-time coldest low temperatures (-25°, -24°, and -21°) were set between January 16th and 18th, 1977. Records also show the river was frozen over 8 days that month.
The hill coming down from Riverfront Stadium was all frozen, so people were sliding down the hill onto the ice. It was really different. It was like an ice amusement park or something, said Boutiere.
Some were on the riverfront to have fun on the snow and ice, but others more timid to walk on something they had never seen before.
Boutiere remembers, It was creepy. It just didn't feel right. I shouldn't be out here. This isn't safe. This isn't really safe.
If you have photos of the frozen river back in 1977, share them with us on the Local 12 Facebook page, or by going to burst.com/local12.
So Cincinnati: University if Cincinnati's McMicken Hall
CINCINNATI (John Lomax) -- A University of Cincinnati administrator calls it the Fountain Square of the university. That
would be McMicken Hall. It is so closely associated with UC you'll
find its image on just about everything from key chains to stationery. Good Morning Cincinnati's John Lomax shows us why this campus landmark is So Cincinnati. If
a class on Shakespeare is not a dead giveaway, how about the unusual
class descriptions on the walls of the halls? And the clincher should
be just the way the building looks from the outside. University
of Cincinnati Archivist, Kevin Grace, said, When you look at it from
outside, you know this is a campus building. It couldn't be anything
else. This is McMicken hall at the University of Cincinnati,
named for Charles McMicken, an original benefactor of the idea of a
university for the city. It's actually the second McMicken Hall. The first was built in the late 1800s. The second replaced it in 1950. This is the identifying building for the University of Cincinnati.University
archivist, Kevin Grace, says because McMicken is the home of the
College of Arts and Sciences, it has a special status. This is
where most of the students have gone through at one time or another. The
College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college at UC. Also
because it's the home of Mick and Mack, our two lions that are truly the
symbols of the University of Cincinnati. Now, their names are
Mick and Mack and that obviously comes from the name of McMicken Hall.
(Mack-Mick-en hall) John Lomax was told Mick is the one of the left.
The one on the right is Mack. But you can't get that confirmed because
they're not talking. They were not originally intended to be here, but they're not stray kitties either. They
were originally owned by Cincinnati businessman, Jacob Hofner,
patterned after statuary he saw in Europe. They ended up in front of
the original McMicken Hall and have been warmly embraced. Apparently in
more ways than one. They've been at UC since 1904. Occasionally
they've had their tales broken off, so there is a permanent mold for
casting new tails. The lions have been in front of both McMicken
Halls, but the cupola is distinct to this one. The outside is
impressive. The inside, just as much. Not that you can just walk in. It's
locked away and then there's the long climb up winding steel mesh
stairways. Very few people get chance to come up into the cupola of
this particular building. And those who have been here want you to know
it. From the signatures of pledge classes to proud window washers; if
you make it here, why not seize the day and let people know you've seen
the campus in a special way. It's a little bit intimidating when you get up to the top but you can see for miles. Its a wonderful view. A wonderful view from inside a landmark that is So Cincinnati.

Cincinnati Attractions - 5 Things Every Tourist Should Do!
Cincinnati Attractions blog post can be found here:
Did you know that Cincinnati is becoming hip? Thanks to a lot of gentrification and the 2015 MLB All-Star Game, there are many Cincinnati attractions that showcase its great food and beer scene, as well as its downtown core. In this video, I cover 5 things every tourist should do in Cincinnati!
Firstly, you have to take a tour with American Legacy Tours. I did the Queen City Haunted Tour that takes you on a ghost tour of the city, including inside the haunted Symphony Hotel! The company offers other great tours as well, like the Underground Tour that shows you the city's hidden tunnels.
The second of the Cincinnati attractions is the Over-The-Rhine neighborhood. This is a trendy neighborhood that has been gentrified and has an excellent food and beer selection, including my favorite cider at Rhinegeist Brewing Company.
Third on the list is Graeter's Ice Cream, which is a local chain with multiple locations across Cincinnati. They are known for their black raspberry chip flavor which I recommend!
Fourth is Smale Riverfront Park, a new downtown park along the riverfront that contains illuminated fountains, a playground, and a Queen City sign. It is clean and beautiful, an absolute treat for locals.
Finally, you have to walk across the John A. Roebling suspension bridge. The bridge has great views of the city and river and will take you right to Kentucky. On the other side of the bridge, you will get a full-scale view of the downtown Cincinnati skyline.
In summary, there are a lot of great things to do in Cincinnati, highlighted by their bars and restaurants, inviting downtown core, and sports as well.
