Reds Hall of Fame exhibit opens at Fitton Center
HAMILTON, Ohio (WKRC) - There's some good news for Reds fans. Now there's a place to catch some of the coolest Reds artwork in the Tri-State.
The opening of the Reds Hall of Fame Museum Road Trip Exhibit was at the Fitton Center in Hamilton on Saturday.
It's blown me away, I have to say, said Ian Mackenzie-Thurley, Executive Director of Fitton Center. Our expectations were very high with this exhibition but the Reds have really hit it out the park.
Fitton Center will showcase some amazing Reds artwork, sculptures and memories while the Hall of Fame Museum undergoes a renovation.
Of course they've got bats and balls and jerseys and those sorts of things a Hall of Fame should have, but their art collection was outstanding, said Mackenzie-Thurley.
One of the artists is Price Hill native Chris Felix. More than 20 of his pieces are on the walls.
This particular exhibit has the most amount of work that I've had in one exhibit so it's very exciting time for me to be involved this, said Felix. Very proud, very lucky and honored to be a part of this.
The space in Hamilton is a perfect fit and function and you could say family. Hamilton is the home of Reds legend Joe Nuxhall.
Of course the old left-hander being around here, I mean it doesn't get much better than that, said Rick Walls, Executive Director of the Reds Hall of Fame Museum. The Nuxhall family and what they mean to the Reds is tremendous. We also have a chapter of the Reds Hall of Fame that's in the area.
Also on display, artwork from the InsideOut Studio. InsideOut provides opportunities for artists with disabilities-- a place to be creative and make and sell their artwork.
Of course the theme this time is Reds baseball.
The Road Trip Exhibit will be on display until March 5.

Crosley mural honors Reds baseball history
CINCINNATI (Perry Schaible) - Honoring Crosley Field with a mural of the historic ballpark began Monday, April 11, at the former Crosley site.
Former Red Tommy Helms lead a group of VIPs and volunteers in painting the first stroke.
I just feel great being a part of it, like Betty O'Toole. I played with Jim here, played with Pete, Frank Robinson, Vada Pinson, everybody, it's just a lot of fond memories. I just wish it was still here, said Helms.
The mural will span 17x50 feet on the side of the City Gospel Mission building.
Crosley Field for almost 70 years was the home of the Reds. It's where all of our parents, our grandparents, where we went as kids, there's so many memories wrapped up with Crosley Field, said historian Greg Rhodes.
The design was inspired by the city's rich baseball history. It shows Crosley Field in the mid-1950s and features replica ads from the era. It depicts an actual game from 1959 in which the Reds beat the Brooklyn Dodgers, 16-4.
It's fitting that it happened on the 104th anniversary of the first game played at Crosley Field; first called Redland Field. There is a partnership between City Gospel Mission, the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum and Keep Cincinnati Beautiful.
The public can be a part of history by buying a personalized brick that will be put in a plaza. Packages start at $175 and include a replica keepsake brick in addition to the one that will be installed.
Fans wait in cold for first grab at Reds tickets

Mural to highlight Crosley Field historic site
CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- Work progresses on a permanent memorial on the site of historic Crosley Field.
The Reds home from 1912 to 1970 stood at Dalton Avenue and York Street. City Gospel Mission is constructing new buildings at the site and its working with the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum on the memorial.
The highlight will be a 100-foot by 20-foot mural of the ballpark. It's hoped the work will be completed by the time the Reds host the All Star game July 2015.
Crosley field hosted two mid-summer classics in 1938 and 1953. Organizers are working on a plan to sell commemorative bricks at the Crosley site.

Lessons from a Reds legend: Famous name in the coaching box
CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A famous name in Cincinnati Reds history now coaches high school baseball in the Tri-State area.
While the name is famous the coach himself is not as well known as his dad. In many ways, the high school baseball coach is just like many others teaching young men how to play the game. But in one way, the first-year coach at Clermont Northeastern High School is different.
It's the name, Gullett. Don Gullett Junior. If you remember the Big Red Machine you remember the first Don Gullett, the coach's father, as an outstanding pitcher and member of the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame. But if the Big Red Machine is as distant to you as Abner Doubleday, it may take awhile to sink in.
Senior outfielder Kody Boyd said, No, I didn't even know Don Gullet was a professional baseball player until my dad asked who the coach was, and I said Don Gullett, not thinking anything of it. And he said, 'The player for the Reds?' And I went home and googled it and little did I know his dad was a pitcher for the Reds and the Yankees. And a good one.
Don Gullett Jr. said, Most of them haven't heard of him. A few, occasionally you'll get one who has. It's when they go home and their parents will say, 'I loved watching your dad throw.' And the kids will research it. In today's world that's not hard to do, and for some reason it brings some credibility to me.
Don Gullett the dad won 109 games in the 70s in a career cut short by injury. He later was pitching coach for the Reds for more than a decade, in the 1990s and early 2000s. Don Gullett Junior said he models his own coaching philosophy after what he learned from his father's coaching days.
A pretty good philosophy coach Gullett Jr. learned from dad: Guide, instruct, but don't push. From Don Gullett Senior to Don Gullett Junior. While this is Don Gullett, Junior's first year at Clermont Northeastern, he has extensive experience as a high school and college coach. He also coaches an elite travel team.
By the way, Don Gullett, Junior was not a pitcher like his dad. He played first base in his high school and college days.

Cincinnati is a city in Ohio, on the Ohio River. The Over-the-Rhine district is known for its 19th-century architecture, including Findlay Market, which has food and craft vendors. To the north is the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. The Cincinnati Museum Center encompasses history, science and children's museums in the art deco Union Terminal. Works spanning 6,000 years are on display at the Cincinnati Art Museum.
Cincinnati is Ohio's third largest city and the largest metro region. It lies on the north bank of the Ohio River in Southwest Ohio in the United States of America. Known as the Queen City or Queen of the West, Cincinnati was the only 19th century American city that left a favorable impression on the then 30-year-old English author Charles Dickens. “Cincinnati is a beautiful city; cheerful, thriving, and animated,” Dickens wrote in “American Notes.” “I have not often seen a place that commends itself so favorably and pleasantly to a stranger at the first glance as this does: with its clean houses of red and white, its well-paved roads, and foot-ways of bright tile. Nor does it become less prepossessing on a closer acquaintance.”
Avondale is a primarily residential urban neighborhood near the center of the city, notable for the presence of the Cincinnati Zoo.
Hyde Park is an upscale, largely white and upper class residential neighborhood. Mt. Adams is a trendy, upscale neighborhood located directly northeast of downtown Cincinnati. Clifton, not to be confused with a nearby Clifton Heights, is also located near the city center. Mt. Washington is an up and coming economically diverse neighborhood located on Cincinnati's east side.
Northside is an economically and racially diverse neighborhood notable for a strong sense of community investment and pride. Oakley is an up and coming neighborhood that borders Hyde Park. ver-the-Rhine (OTR) is the city's historic district. Price Hill is one of Cincinnati’s oldest neighborhoods, first settled in 1789 and named Price Hill in the 1870s after General Rees Price. West End the little bit that survived of this once large densely populated neighborhood would not be notable for travelers except for the Dayton Street Historic District. Riverfront/The Banks This is a newly developed area in downtown Cincinnati that falls between Great American Ballpark home of the Reds. Newport and Covington Though these neighborhoods are actually across the river in Kentucky.

Reds pitchers and catchers report to Goodyear Friday
CINCINNATI (Perry Schaible) -- We are just 45 days away from opening day. Today Reds pitchers and catchers are required to report to spring training in Goodyear, Arizona. They take the field under new direction. Bryan Price is starting the season for the first time as manager. He spent the previous four years with the team as pitching coach. He says he has a lot of work but he's ready for the job. He thinks one of his strengths will be putting the players in the positions they need to be in. He knows he needs to communicate with the players. Price says this is a hard game to play well on a consistent basis. You can't just be that guy that is always there for them when they're doing well and not when they're struggling. Probably some of the most important times to communicate are when things aren't going well. Reds fans are also looking forward to a new exhibit at the Reds Hall of Fame Museum. Kings of the Queen City highlights the Reds history of big moments and big players. The exhibit opens Friday, February 14 at 10 a.m.
