Places to see in ( Hamburg - Germany ) Colonnaden
The Colonnaden (the colonnades, pl. also in German lang.) are a shopping street in Neustadt quarter, Hamburg, Germany. The street, now largely a pedestrian zone, forms a diagonal junction from Jungfernstieg boulevard to Esplanade/Stephansplatz. It has a rich tradition and was dubbed a Prachtmeile (lit. splendour mile).
Most of the buildings are designed in Renaissance Revival architecture and the north eastern side of the street is formed by arcades. In the 1870s, the street was a private road of the Wex brothers. Most buildings were erected around 1880. When the street was built, the last remnants of the Oper am Gänsemarkt were demolished. The KellJung line of Hamburg U-Bahn, later known as U1 line, was built until 1930 below the street, leading occasionally to a sales slowdown of the local shops.
In 1974, the street became a pedestrian zone. At the same time, a footbridge was built to the building of the former Hotel Esplanade, Dammtor area and Dammtor station, linking the street with the footbridge of the Dag Hammarskjöld bridge at the station. Many of the old apartment buildings are under monumental protection since 1978. The footbridge to the hotel building was demolished in 2005. In addition, the street was redesigned the same year. The southern part was partly re-opened for motorized traffic.

Visit GERMANY (HAMBURG) - Walk in Hamburg City
Hamburg begins with its foundation in the 9th century as a mission settlement to convert the Saxons. Since the Middle Ages, Hamburg was an important trading center in Europe. The convenient location of the port and its independence as a city and state for centuries strengthened this position.
The city was member in the medieval Hanseatic trading league and a free imperial city of the Holy Roman Empire. From 1815 until 1866 Hamburg was an independent and sovereign state of the German Confederation, then the North German Confederation (1866–71), the German Empire (1871–1918) and during the period of the Weimar Republic (1918–33).
In Nazi Germany Hamburg was a city-state and a Gau from 1934 until 1945. After the Second World War Hamburg was in the British Zone of Occupation and became a state in the western part of Germany in the Federal Republic of Germany (Since 1949).

Jungfernstieg mostly lies within the quarter of Neustadt; however at its easternmost it stretches as far as Hamburg-Altstadt. In total the Jungfernstieg stretches some 600 m along the southern and south-western shores of the Binnenalster lake and continues further to Gänsemarkt. On the lakeside it is framed by Ballindamm (and the nearby Europa Passage shopping centre) to the east and Neuer Jungfernstieg to the west. Towards the built-up area Jungfernstieg intersects with a number of streets - in the Altstadt with Bergstraße, Plan and Reesendamm; the latter carries on along the shore of Kleine Alster (Little Alster) towards Rathausmarkt. At Reesendammbrücke, Jungfernstieg crosses the Alster into Neustadt. It goes past Neuer Wall and Große Bleichen, two of Hamburg's leading shopping precincts. At the intersection with Neuer Jungfernstieg, Jungfernstieg forms a Y-junction with Colonnaden, another shopping street.
The entire circumference of the lakeside is occupied by a terrace. Two pavilions are located on the terrace: the Alsterpavillion (a café), and a smaller pavilion, which functions as the entrance to the rapid transit station. The lakeside is also a hub for Hamburg's Alster ferries.

The piers are located in the St. Pauli area of Hamburg, between the lower harbour and the Fischmarkt (Fish Market), on the banks of the Elbe river. The Landungsbrücken today form a central transportation hub, with S-Bahn, U-Bahn and ferry stations, and are also a major tourist magnet with numerous restaurants and departure points for harbour pleasure boats. There is an entrance to the Old Elbe tunnel at the western end of the Landungsbrücken. The eastern end of the building complex is marked by the Pegelturm (water level tower). Halfway up the tower, there is a water level indicator built into the wall, which indicates the current stage of the tides.

Gerd Jansen’s Pfeifendepot | YTPC in Hamburg | 15.07.2015 | 07/15/2015 | Pfeife rauchen
On july 15th 2015, we finally made it. Four members of the german YTPC met at Gerd Jansen’s Pfeifendepot (Pipe Depot) in Hamburg. We really had a great day with a lot of fun. We were laughing all day long while smoking our pipes and enjoying some freshly brewed tea and coffee in the sun in front of the store.

Treppenviertel, Blankenese 4K UHD - Hamburg Walking Tour
The so-called 'Treppenviertel' in Blankenese, with its winding alleys and small mansions by the river is a perfect postcard image. White houses create a Mediterranean feel. This tranquil little beauty spot in Hamburg's westernmost corner stands in glaring contrast to the Hanseatic city’s bustling centre. No wonder that the rich and famous regularly take to the Blankenese quarter for a short vacation.
Another feature that clearly sets Blankenese apart? It has by far the most hilly terrain in all of Hamburg. The quarter has approximately 5,000 steps, including the Strandtreppe (lit. 'beach staircase'), which has 170 steps. Tours around the Trepperviertel will lead you along Wilhelminian style houses and the church by the market square, through parks, and up and down enough staircases that you can count it as your workout for the day.
Climbing the top of 72-metre-hight Süllberg will reward you with a dreamlike view over the Elbe riverbed, the container ships in the harbour, and the Airbus grounds in Finkenwerder. Beer gardens are perfect for a break on the Süllberg terraces, and once you've managed the descent to the Elbe beach, a magnificent stroll along the waterfront awaits.
