Sorrento, Italy
The Amalfi Coast on the southern part of the Sorrento Peninsula is one of the prettiest areas in Italy. The Amalfi Drive, hugging the coast of the Campania region along the Gulf of Salerno, has been called Italy's most romantic road. This narrow, winding cliff-hanging byway, in places carved right out of the side of the mountain, is a challenge to navigate. However, those traversing the Amalfi Drive are rewarded with spectacular views of small coves and of boats bobbing in the azure sea far below. Amalfi and Positano are the two most popular spots along the Amalfi Coast.
Amalfi, 61 km (38 miles) east of Sorrento and with a population of only 5,500, is the largest town on this coast. Dramatically situated at the mouth of a ravine under towering 1,315-meter (4,312-foot) Mt. Cerreto, the burg is sandwiched between tall cliffs and a rocky coastline broken occasionally by coves with sandy beaches.
Amalfi's rich history is not evident from what tourists see today. Incredibly, this small town was once the capital of the seafaring Republic of Amalfi, one of the great maritime powers. From the ninth to the eleventh century Amalfi rivaled Venice and Genoa for influence in the Mediterranean.
The first mention of Amalfi dates from the sixth century, and a circular maritime trade with the East developed soon thereafter. Grain, slaves, salt and timber were traded to Egypt and Syria for gold dinars. These coins were then paid to the Byzantines for silk which was in turn sold back in Europe. Independent from the seventh century until 1075, Amalfi reached the height of its power in about 1000 when it boasted a population of 70,000. Not only was the ship compass introduced to Europe in 1302 by Flavio Gioia, an Amalfi native, but Amalfi's maritime code was used in the Mediterranean until 1570.
Positano, a picturesque seaport of 3,900 lying 17 km (11 miles) west of Amalfi, was part of the maritime Republic of Amalfi in the tenth century. However, Positano's apogee came much later. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries ships from Positano carried silk, spices and wood to the Middle East. The subsequent decline of Positano's prosperity coincided with the rise of steamships in the mid-nineteenth century. As much as three-quarters of the town's population of 8,000 immigrated to the United States, with the majority going to New York. Interestingly, one of the tough tasks that faced later mayors of Positano was finding enough burial plots for those very emigrees, many of whom wanted to be buried back in their birthplace.
Positano, little more than a sleepy fishing village in the early twentieth century, was discovered after World War II when American troops, stationed in nearby Salerno, began taking holidays there. In the 1950s writers such as John Steinbeck and Tennessee Williams and painters such as Paul Klee were drawn to Positano. In the 1960s Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones composed the lyrics to their song Midnight Rambler while on holiday in Positano. The rest, as they say, is history. Today tourism is the major industry, and the town is simply besieged by Europeans and North Americans during the summer. Positano is now among Europe's most chic destinations.
Sorrento, on the Gulf of Naples, is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. With a population of 17,000, Sorrento lies at the western end of the Amalfi Drive. It can be reached easily by train, bus, ferry or hydrofoil from Naples, only 50 km (30 miles) away, or by ferry or hydrofoil from the Isle of Capri. Local coastal ferries operate along the Amalfi Coast between Sorrento in the west and Salerno in the east. In summer there are also ferry and hydrofoil services between Amalfi, Positano and Capri and between Amalfi, Positano and Naples.
Italy travel: Amalfi Coast, the town of Amalfi
Italy travel: Amalfi Coast, approaching the town of Amalfi. The Perillo Tours bus would not have fit thru these two tunnels. We go past a statue dedicated to the guy who supposedly invented the compass. Tony said that Flavio Gioia invented the compass, but a check on Google for compass inventor indicates that the compass was invented in China some 200 years BC. Whatever; here's Amalfi's statue to the Italian inventor of the compass. (You can view this video, and other travel videos in full-size and near-DVD quality, travel stills and more at jpmeyer.com).

TUSCANY ITALY in 4K - Florence, Pisa, Montecatini Terme
Taking a holiday from our holiday (if you're a veteran digital nomad, you'll understand). Checking out Tuscany region of Italy for a few days, before heading back to the high altitude lakes & rivers of northern Italy for a month until we'll continue floating around southern parts of Europe during the coming winter. I apologize for the poor editing this time around: my 8-core laptop with 16 Gigs of RAM can barely make it through 4k video editing (256 Gigs worth of video clips on a timeline is a lot to ask from any laptop these days). Better editing next time- I promise.

About Us:
I'm PJ. My partner, inspiration, trainer, chef, and moral compass, Risa, are what we (reluctantly) refer to as, digital nomads. I say, reluctantly, as I've been living the digital nomad lifestyle for about 15 years now (long before the term was coined, and became the cheesy trend it is today. It seems that everyone these days on vacation with a laptop, a pina colada next to them, Avicii on their headphones, and a dozen memory sticks filled with selfies now considers themselves a (don't forget the hashtag) digital nomad.
I started out at age 19. I quit my job at the time, to focus on the then still relatively unknown arbitrage business model as applied on eBay. Long story short, I saw an opportunity, invested all I had in it (time + money) and by my early 20s, I no longer had any interest in returning to Canada (where I grew up). I bounced mostly around Asia, for many years (all the usual nomad hotspots: Thailand, Vietnam, S. Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, with a preference for Japan (lived all over Japan, from Tokyo, to the most remote Japanese islands in the Pacific).
In late 2013, one of my returns to Tokyo, I met a captivating young woman, Risa, who helped me to re-calibrate my high-flyin', rock-star lifestyle and regain focus. Within a few months of meeting, she elected to quit her job in Tokyo and joined me on this nomadic journey. This channel, will document our perpetual traveller lifestyle. It's not always easy, it's not always fun. There are highs and lows. Sometimes money is very tight, other times it seems like it's the least of our worries. But when done right, the digital nomad lifestyle is a journey unlike any other.
Over the last few years, we generally stay off the beaten path and instead venture into areas seldom spoken about in digital nomad circles. You won't see us visiting Bali, Saigon, or Bangkok. Been there, got the SIM card, and still feel a bit hungover.
As we travel, we focus on personal growth, on disconnecting, unlearning, and thus thriving. We attempt to engage in philanthropy when we can. We respect the cultures kind enough to allow us to visit their land and their homes.
Feel free to send us feedback, comments, suggestions. Thank you for taking an interest in our journey. More videos of exotic places, stories, and people, will be uploaded weekly. As a demonstration of my gratitude to you for taking an interest in us, I will continue improving the quality of the content I create for you on a regular basis.
PJ, and Risa

Places to see in ( Amalfi Coast - Italy ) Amalfi
Places to see in ( Amalfi Coast - Italy ) Amalfi
Amalfi is a town in a dramatic natural setting below steep cliffs on Italy’s southwest coast. Between the 9th and 11th centuries, it was the seat of a powerful maritime republic. The Arab-Norman Sant'Andrea cathedral at the heart of town, with its striped Byzantine facade, survives from this era. The Museo Arsenale Amalfi is a medieval shipyard-turned-exhibition space.
Amalfi is a graceful place: its cluster of white buildings gleams like a pearl in the strand of towns strung along the Amalfi Coast. It's also one of the more level; it ambles up the hillside from the water rather than clinging vertically to it like some of the other famous destinations here, making it a bit easier to walk around.
Amalfi is one of the most historic towns along the Amalfi Coast, having had a glorious history as a maritime republic whose status joined the ranks of coastal powerhouses like Pisa, Venice and Genoa. It was a trade bridge between the Byzantine and western worlds for centuries. Its importance in that historic trading league is celebrated every year with the Regatta of the Four Ancient Maritime Republics, which takes place every June, alternating among each of the four cities to battle once again for seafaring bragging rights. It's a spectacular event.
The city starts at the water's edge with a pretty promenade along the Mediterranean and a marina full of colorful boats and their international flags. The focal point of the historic center is the Piazza del Duomo, in front of the striking cathedral. The piazza is clustered with sidewalk cafes and elegant shops, but the sixty steps leading to the church beckon to be scaled to visit the Byzantine style structure that bears Moorish-influenced arches and decoration. Dedicated to St. Andrew, the Duomo di Sant'Andrea is a truly beautiful structure. Inside is the hidden Cloister of Paradise, dating to 1266, with a forest of columns, Arabesque arches and an amazing fresco. The crypt is highly decorated and worth a visit, too.
Italian mariner Flavio Gioia was an Amalfitan who is credited with inventing the modern-style magnetic compass and packaging into a portable container. There is a monument and piazza in his honor here in his hometown. The tavole amalfitane are ancient drafts of Amalfi's intricate maritime codes, preserved in the Civic Museum. The town has a long history as a center of paper mills, so be sure to stop into the Museo della Carta (Paper Museum) to see how the pretty products were (and still are!) made by hand. There are still some family-owned paper mills that carry on the tradition.
Looking around town and the surrounding hills, you'll quickly see that the primary product of the area is enormous orbs of lemons, picked fresh to make limoncello liqueur and used in local dishes, as well. The lemon motif shows up in regional ceramics and citrus scent fills the air as you meander about.
The Emerald Grotto is one of Amalfi's natural wonders, at Cape Conca. It emits an eerie emerald hue that emanates from its depths thanks to an underwater crevice that refracts sunlight. Amalfi's maritime importance continues, as you can hop ferries and hydrofoils to Salerno, Positano and Capri, or you can hire a boat to take you to hidden coves to enjoy a day of private sun and surf. Buses connect the town to Ravello, Positano and Sorrento.
