On exhibit at the Kadokura historical museum, located on the left side of the main gate to the temple, are ancient documents and personal effects of the Kadokura, a family of wealthy merchants who had a close connection with Jojakko-ji.

Ninnaji is one of Kyoto's many great temples which are resistered as World Heritage Sites. It is the head temple of the Omuro School of the Shingon sect of Buddhism and was established in 888 by the ruling emperor. Throughout many centuries, a member of the Imperial Family used to serve as Ninnaji's chief, and the temple was also called as Omuro Imperial Palace.
Due to the many wars and fires that destroyed Kyoto throughout its history, there are no temples that still survives from the temple's foundation in the 9th century. The oldest buildings include the main hall (Kondo), the Kannon Hall, the Niomon front gate, the Chumon inner gate and the five storied pagoda, which are all date back to the beginning of the Edo Period in the early 1600s, .
