BLM Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area Dedication (1991)
Seems like it was just yesterday…
Take a step back in time and learn a little more about one of coastal Oregon’s more popular destinations – the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area. Dedicated on June 8, 1991, the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area is the year-round residence for a herd of about 100 Roosevelt elk.
The Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area stretches along a 3-mile section of Oregon Highway 38, with two designated viewing areas and several observation pull-outs. There is an outdoor interpretive center where you can learn more about the Roosevelt elk, other wildlife, and the area. Spotting scopes near the interpretive center allow for close viewing opportunities. The Roosevelt elk are most active during the morning and late afternoon hours, making these the most likely times for viewings.
A mild winter climate and abundant food allow the Roosevelt elk to remain at the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area all year. Dean Creek is a Day Use Only site.
Before Dean Creek became an elk viewing area, and before Highway 38 was built, marshes and wetlands made up the landscape along the Umpqua River. From the late 1800s to the 1960s, various dikes and roads made it possible for families to farm and graze dairy cows in the pastures of Dean Creek.
The BLM, in partnership with the State of Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, took over management of the site in 1991. Ongoing projects, such as haying and field burns, enhance Dean Creek’s pastures and keep forage quality high.

Fun Things to Do in Reedsport on the Oregon Coast
Reedsport is a small town on the Oregon Coast, located at the point where the Umpqua River flows into the Pacific. Reedsport is nicely situated in the midst of the famous Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. These features combine to make Reedsport a scenic and fun place to visit and an access point to a broad range of outdoor recreation. Here are my picks for fun things to do in Reedsport, Oregon.
Umpqua Discovery Center
Reedsport's Umpqua Discovery Center is a little tricky to find but well worth a visit. The museum has two wings -- one devoted to the natural history of the region, the other devoted to the human history. All of the exhibits are well designed to appeal to both children and adults. The natural history section is a simulated hike called Pathways To Discovery - Exploring Tidewater Country. The walls along the way are covered in exquisitely detailed murals containing the flora and fauna that call the area home.
Interpretive signs, exhibits, drawers, and recordings are scattered along the route, filling you in on the local critters and landscape. Be sure to spend some time in the theatre cave to view one of the short films. The other section inside of the Umpqua Discovery Center is called Tidewaters & Time. You'll take a walk through time, learning about the local human history and culture through a variety of sights and sounds. The Coastal Indian Tribes, early explorers, pioneers, loggers, fishermen, and early settlement are all covered.
The center of the Umpqua Discovery Center contains a well-stocked gift shop that includes books, nautical items, gift items, and learning toys. The museum sits along the Umpqua River. Decks and boardwalks behind the center allow you to enjoy great views of Reedsport's bridges and estuarine environment. Take the stairs up to the viewing tower to extend your view.
Umpqua Lighthouse State Park
The charming Umpqua Lighthouse lies within a working U.S. Coast Guard facility and can be visited on a scheduled tour. Nearby you'll find the Coastal Visitor Center & Museum, located in the old Coast Guard Administration Building. The visitor center houses many interesting exhibits and artifacts related to the history of Coast Guard activities in the area. Umpqua Lighthouse State Park visitors can also enjoy camping, walking trails, whale watching, and picnicking.
Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area
You'll head east out of Reedsport on Highway 38 to get to the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area, home of a resident herd of magnificent Roosevelt elk. The viewing area stretches along a 3-mile section of Oregon Highway 38, with two viewing areas and several observation pull-outs. The Dean Creek Elk outdoor interpretive exhibits allow you to learn more about the elk, as well as other local flora and fauna. Another BLM-operated recreation site, the O.H. Hinsdale Rhododendron Garden, is located on the other side of Highway 38.
Oregon Dunes NRA Visitor Center
Staffed by expert park rangers, the official visitor center for the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is located right along Highway 101 in Reedsport. You'll be able to find out anything and everything you want to know about Oregon Dunes activities, as well as other local recreation and attractions. The Oregon Dunes NRA Visitor Center also has a few interpretive exhibits and a small bookstore.

Hiking the Oregon Dunes & Sightseeing Around Reedsport OR
In this video, I take you along on a morning hike into the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. We hike from the John Kellenback Trailhead through a patch of coastal forest and out onto the sand dunes.
This patch of dunes is pretty well untouched by ATV tracks and has one rather towering sand dune. I hike to the top and give you a 360 view of the remarkable terrain.
After the dune hike, we visit a Highway 101 wayside viewpoint for an overlook at the coastline below, then drive down along Umpqua Beach.
There I show a dune ATV staging area and some of the ocean beach. Next, I give you a look at the historic Umpqua River Lighthouse and the views out to the river mouth.
Finally, we head inland a bit and visit the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area and the Reedsport Riverfront district.

Roosevelt Elk Viewing
There is a place called Dean Creek near Reedsport, Oregon. It is a wonderful area to view these beautiful animals. We drive by it every time we go to Eugene or Roseburg, Oregon. We always enjoy seeing it and I thought some of you might too. On our way home we saw about 20 females about 1/2 a mile to the east and farther down the road to the west a large number of males were grazing only about 20 feet from the viewing platform. They often come very close to the parking area and viewing platform. This herd is protected and can not be hunted (in case any of you were wondering.)

Elk
Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area near Reedsport Oregon is an important part of the state's elk management program. The site, which encompasses 1,040 acres, is jointly administered by the Bureau of Land Management and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and is managed with public viewing and education in mind.
Pastures are mowed, grazed, and fertilized to improve the nutrition and palatability for the elk. Portions of the wetland have been enhanced to provide more standing water for a variety of waterfowl. The O.H. Hinsdale Interpretive Center offers information about Oregon's elk and the environment of the Dean Creek area as well as spotting scopes to enhance viewing. In addition, there is a three-mile viewing area with strategically placed pullouts.
The herd of 60 to 100 Roosevelt elk roams freely in the protected pasture, woodland, and wetland areas, sharing their habitat with other wildlife including bald eagles, Canada geese, beaver, and black-tailed deer. A fence separates them from the roadway.
