Ground Report : Old Delhi Living Heritage
A documentary on the Havelis of Old Delhi, which has stood for more than 200 years as timeless beauty and repository of Delhi’s culture and tradition. While some of the havelis have been restored, some are still surviving as a narrative of neglect and a spiral of urban overgrowth. In this documentary we also speak to those people who have been working to conserve these old structures and infuse life into these spaces just like they were in the good old times.

Delhi organises heritage walks to promote tourism destinations
New Delhi, April 18 (ANI): Delhi government on Saturday launched a series of heritage walks to promote various tourism destinations in the national capital. One such heritage walk was flagged off by Delhi’s tourism minister, Jitender Singh Tomar, at the historic Purana Qila (Old Fort) to mark the World Heritage Day. The fort is a 16th century monument believed to be Delhi’s oldest fort built by the Afghan invader, Sher Shah Suri. Delhi Tourism has teamed up with Delhi Heritage Management Secretariat to create awareness about dozens of such historical sites. People from across the city gathered on a warm Saturday morning to walk and gain knowledge about the site by historians and academicians. Many said the heritage walk covered various aspects of history but felt more comprehensive and detailed information was needed.

Heritage walk in Mehrauli | Jahaz Mahal architecture as explained by 'Delhi by Foot' team
A heritage walk during the monsoon season in Mehrauli, a 'monsoon retreat' for the last Mughals. Mehrauli village is surrounded by Mughal architecture on all its sides. The heritage walk was organized by 'Delhi by Foot' in collaboration with 'Riya Sarkar', an architect by training who enjoys leading heritage walks in the city and is a fantabulous storyteller. Also 'Parwaz', a group renowned for their poetry, baithaks and interactive events on literary themes enlightened the walk with couplets from the last Mughal rulers.
The attendees were a group of around 20 people, who belonged from different walks of life.

Heritage Walk In Delhi IIEpisode 1II Safdarjung Tomb, India Gate, Purana Qila
Delhi is the capital of India since old times. Delhi's history dates back to the first millenium BC, when it was known as Indraprastha. It is the epicenter of the nation's politics, economy and culture. History is alive and throbbing in Delhi, the capital of India. It is often said that the history of India is the history of Delhi. New Delhi, the capital of India, has always occupied a strategic position in the country's history, as Hindu and Islamic dynasties have ruled from here, leaving their imprint in the form of relics, which recapture those bygone times. Delhi, is today, one of the fastest growing cities of India.
#Safdarjungtomb :-
Safdarjung's Tomb is the last of the enclosed garden tombs in the tradition of Humayun's tomb. It was built in 1753-54, for Safdarjung, the Prime Minister of Muhammad Shah, the Mughal emperor between 1719-48. Marble was allegedly stripped from other tombs to build Safdarjung's tomb. Now that speaks volumes for the kind of power Safdarjung must have wielded during his rule! The tomb has several smaller pavilions - Jangli Mahal (Palace in the Woods), Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace) and Badshah Pasand (King's Favourite) - the interiors of which have been beautifully ornamented in the typical Mughal style. The Archaeological Survey of India maintains a library over the main gateway, and it is a haven for all bookworms and history buffs.
When was it built: 1754
Who built it: Nawab Shujaud Daula
Where is it located: At the Intersection of Safdarjung Road and Aurobindo Marg, New Delhi,
Why was it built: Built as a mausoleum of Safdarjung
Architectural Style: Mughal Empire style
Visit Timing: Daily, Sunrise to Sunset
Nearest station: Jor Bagh
Entry fees per person for Indian citizens is Rs. 15/- and for foreigners is Rs. 200/-. Entry is free for children up to 15 years of age. While still camera photography is free of charge, Rs. 25 is charged for each video camera.
#Indiagate :-
This solemn monument was built in memory of the 90,000 Indian soldiers who died in World War I. It was built in 1931, designed by Lutyens, and was originally called the All India War Memorial. The names of the soldiers are inscribed on the walls of the arc of the gate. Later in 1971, an eternal flame was lit here in memory of the unknown soldiers who died in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan war. India Gate stands at the end of Rajpath, and is a popular picnic site especially during hot summer evenings. At night, the Gate is brightly lit and the fountains near the Gate are lit with colored lights. The sight is delightful.
Where is it located: Rajpath Marg, India Gate, New Delhi, Delhi 110001
Height: 42 m
Opened: 12 February 1931
Established: 10 February 1921
Architect: Edwin Lutyens

#PuranaQila :-
In 1538, the Mughal emperor Humayun laid the foundations of his city named Dinpanah, or the Refuge of the Faithful. The inner citadel of this city is today called Purana Qila or the Old Fort. An old fort, it is! One can almost smell the ancient stories oozing from the corners of the fort. The site of the fort was also Indraprasta, the capital of the famed warriors of the Mahabharata, the Pandavas. Excavations near the eastern wall of the fort reveal that the site had been occupied since 1000 B.C. Archaeologists found painted grey ware pottery and other remains, which date back to the Mahabharata. The Purana Qila has three gates - Humayun Darwaza, Talaqi Darwaza and Bara Darwaza. The present entrance is the Bara Darwaza, an imposing red sandstone gate on the western wall. Inside the Purana Qila is the Sher Mandal, a two-storied octagonal pavilion in red sandstone, built by Sher Shah. Humayun used it as a library after he captured the fort. However, the Mandal is tragic, since it was here where the emperor is said to have tripped on its tortuous stairs and tumbled to his death in 1556.
Where is it located: Mathura Rd, Near Delhi Zoo, New Delhi, Delhi 110003
When was it built: 1538
Visit Timing: Daily, Sunrise to Sunset
Who built it: Sher Shah Suri
Nearest Metro Station: Pragati Maidan

Talking History |10| Delhi: Shahjahanabad - The City of Gold
Talking History is a documentary series on Rajya Sabha TV charting the past of fabulous Indian cities and their history.
In this episode we talk about the foundation of Shahjahanabad, loosely known as Old Delhi or Puraani Dilli now. The city was built by Mughal emperor Shahjahan after he shifted the mughal capital from Agra to Delhi in 1639 AD.
By then, the Mughals had already established themselves in rule as well art and architecture. In the city of Shahjahanabad, the remnants of that era could be seen preserved in its havellis, nesteled in the narrow lanes, glittering markets and cuisine, which is tipped to be straight from the royal kitchen.
Besides the royal palace in Red Fort, popular boulevard Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid, Lal Mandir, Fatehpuri Masjid, string of mansions for the nobles and markets were build when Shahjahan had commissioned the city in the mid 17th century.

Walk in streets of CHANDANI CHOWK, Old Delhi, India (HD)
Subscribe -
Chandani Chowk is about 300 years old Shopping area which is located near Red Fort in Old Delhi. The purpose of this video is to show the importance of each and every inch of space. The streets in this video are very deep inside the Chandani Chowk area where any navigation system also gets confused. In this video you will find very old facade of houses, some Jain temples, some mosques and some sleeping Dogs on scooters :P and people busy with their daily life. While recording this video I came across some dead ends and streets in some areas were as narrow as 3 feet only. I decided not to remove the street sounds so that everyone can feel the same environment of the streets. Thanks Hope you will enjoy..:)
