Hurtigruten's North Cape Excursion
The excursion is from the port of Honningsvag. A number of coaches transport passengers the 36km to the Cape with a number of different language speaking guides.
The Cape is at 71 degrees north and 25 degrees east. As far as latitude is concerned that makes it further north than all of Alaska and as far as longitude goes, further east than Athens.
In the winter months the trip will only take place if the road is safe but you will see that it is essential for the convey to be led by a snowplough when there is heavy snowfall. As I said in the commentary, a car driver AND each of their passengers will be fined if they attempt the journey by themselves when conditions prevail and a warning notice is in place.
At the Cape there is a visitor centre which charts its history, from Victorian times when it became a popular destination. Back in time visitors had to climb the steep steps from the shore below in order to reach the 'most northerly point in Europe'. (If you want to be pedantic, the Cape actually sits on an Island which means that then most northerly mainland point is in fact Cape Nordkinn, and to make matters even more confusing, Knivskjellodden to the west, is 1,457m further north!!
Having said this, it was a very enjoyable 4 hour excursion and another destination ticked from the holiday list.
